Please try not to make links between individuals and political movements/parties. Personally, I think Putin's joke did not trivialize the issue, but it doesn't really matter. Putin33 is not the representative of the left. He is a representation of the person with the username Putin33. That's it. Actual elected officials have more credibility in claiming to represent parties, but they don't either, and shouldn't claim to.

And, steephie, while on a very technical note you may be correct that it's not only women who are raped by men, the *vast* majority of rapes (I believe around 90%) are believed to be of the male rapist / female victim variety.

I don't know what the statistics are like for human-on-monkey rape.

I understand what you say and why you say it but not everybody thinks things through much. I can think of enough people who wouldn't believe a boy if he says he was raped simply because he's a boy.

Gender shouldn't matter. 100%of the rape victims were victims of rape. Among those are boys and girls, men and women. (yes, men. I almost forgot those myself. That's the danger I'm speaking of) That most rapists apparently prefer girls is a matter of taste (however awful that sounds) I'm guessing.

Whilst there are both male and female victims of rape (and plenty of victims that don't really identify as either), it's a false equivalency to compare the two in this sort of way because there are so many more female victims than male victims. We live in a culture where rape is treated incredibly badly, and this is one of the main reasons why rape jokes are particularly reprehensible for the most part.

Putin only has to make one innocuous sarcastic post for a whole brigade of hilarity to come running.

Jamiet, I may have misinterpreted, but to me it seems you first admitted it's technically possible that men get raped but then you used the fact that the vast majority of victims are female as an argument that male victims are somehow irrelevant/less relevant. I would like it to drop from everyone's front page, not just mine, specifically because of (a) above.

I've only just seen the responses with the latest bump. My response has two points encased within it:

1) There are far more female victims of rape than male victims. Like, it's overwhelmingly the case that the victims are female bodied. I forget the exact numbers, but it's something like 20% of women will be raped or sexually assaulted in their lifetime. Suffice to say that the male rate is nothing like that high. This means that making a direct comparison between the two is just not an intellectually honest thing to do.

2) Just google Daisy Coleman as an example of what I mean when i say that rape is handled terribly in our society right now.
