Any graduate student/professor of Psychology on this site?
I am interested in doing a correlational study concerning the game of Diplomacy and its players. For starter, I want to correlate myers-briggs/keirsey personalities and general intelligence with game performance, chat frequency, and country preference.
If you are interested, please post here or PM me if you are concerned with your RL identity (preferred).

Ghost-Ratings up for November and December
As usual, they can be found on:
tournaments.webdiplomacy.net

I normally don't comment on these, but... I'll just say, look at the gap at the top of the list at your own risk...

George Will at it again. Brilliant!
In 1927, the corrupt politicians of Washington state created a monopoly of ferry rights on Lake Chelan to a company owned by cronies. Today a pair of brothers have a case challenging this monopoly and Will writes brilliantly about it. If you European and not American don't waste your time.

A Message from the Mods
1) Please join me in congratulating FK on his promotion to Admin
2) I have drafted a set of guidelines containing every possible scenario I could think of. It is being reviewed by the rest of the mod team now. Although Mods will still have autonomy, it will serve as an official reference for us, so we can do a better job at making consistent decisions.

Abge, can those guidelines be made public?
I think being capable of making TC mute you should be a new requirement for becoming a mod.
Gobbledydook (1389 D(B))
17 Dec 11 UTC
Still doesn't answer the question properly: what's the difference between Admin and Mod?
Yellowjacket (835 D(B))
17 Dec 11 UTC
Hear, hear. As a person who has broken rules without knowing he has broken them, (despite carefully reading the posted guidelines, and don't give me that rule 9 bullshit) and been harshly warned for his offenses, explicit public guidelines would be awesome for me as well.
Yellowjacket (835 D(B))

That hear here was, of course, directed at smiley's comment.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))

@ : )

Certain guidelines, such as Force Pause, will be made public, but not the entire document.

@Gobb

Admins have a few more powers than mods. Admins have more experience than mods and are often called upon to assist with cases.
☺ (1304 D)
17 Dec 11 UTC
Abge: Why not?
Gobbledydook (1389 D(B))
17 Dec 11 UTC
Abge: what extra powers?
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
17 Dec 11 UTC
@ : )

Because it's an internal document and not all of it is relevant or appropriate for all Members to view.

@Gobb

We don't disclose Mod/Admin powers.
yebellz (729 D(G))
17 Dec 11 UTC
Besides those already disclosed, such as zombification of stabbers, and the responsibility of reviewing the american-idol style audition tapes.
☺ (1304 D)
17 Dec 11 UTC
Abge: Your statement doesn't really add any information. It can be assumed to be true from your previous statement, that you will not release part of it. But relevance shouldn't really be a criterion, (Why do you care if someone wants to waste their time reading it?) and I don't think it would be inappropriate for members to view it. Can you explain why it would be?
yebellz (729 D(G))
17 Dec 11 UTC
Well, we wouldn't want to reveal the details of the conspiracy, of course ;)
Thucydides (864 D(B))
17 Dec 11 UTC
Smiley, we don't want to disclose, firstly because it details some of what we can do, which we keep hidden for obvious reasons. Second, because if people know exactly what guidelines we mods are following they can easily find ways to get around it or find loopholes, imho.

All you need to follow are the rules already posted. Our guidelines are intended to help us fairly enforce those rules as well as keep the site as fun as efficient as possible.

I think the guidlelines may actually contain clues to some of their investigative techniques that would give would be cheaters an undue advantage.

Transparency!
Draugnar (0 DX)
17 Dec 11 UTC
This is a private website, not some government ganecy. Do you demand that a privately held (not publicly held) company produce every single aspect of it's business to the public? If you do, you're an idiot because Draugnar PRoductions will *never* show you it's books, nor will Cincom or dozens of SMBs like the mom and pop restaurants and grocery stores. They don't have to and they won't.
santosh (335 D)
17 Dec 11 UTC
They can't disclose the guidelines because the Book of Guidelines includes a guideline that forbids them from disclosing the guidelines. Our mods hands are tied.
santosh (335 D)
17 Dec 11 UTC
I'm frankly surprised said Book of Guidelines does not include a guideline that demands the denial of its existence. Maybe it did and was changed post Babak-Sarg issues to contain unrest in the masses.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))

@ : )

Thucy really hit the nail on the head.

1) Reading the guide in full may reveal what tactics we use, which we do not want people to know.

2) This guide was written by me in my free time. I did not pay a lawyer to look it over. I don't want to deal with all the loopholes that I'm sure exist.
Gobbledydook (1389 D(B))
18 Dec 11 UTC
Black-box dealing!!!!!
Down with them mods!
Leif_Syverson (271 D)
18 Dec 11 UTC
Ah the smell of the massess foaming at the mouth over some new, lauded, imagined power that is out of their grasp..

How many of them would really want (know how? care?) to have to sort out all the cheating accusations, moderate the Babak/Sarg dispute, silence and ban players and deal with all the piles of shit thrown at the mods/admins?

Frankly, I think a funeral dirge is in better taste for you FK than congrats.. with many obituaries of thanks and pining over how much your former self will be missed.

How much of a raise did they give you?
Friendly Sword (636 D)
18 Dec 11 UTC
There aren't really any secret powers at all, the mods just want you to use your mind to fill in the blanks and elevate them to super-human deity status. Obviously.

☺ (1304 D)
18 Dec 11 UTC
Abge: That makes sense. I suppose if the document is written in a "If you observe this, do this" form, that would make sense. But I was thinking it would be written in the form "If you come to this conclusion, do this." And I can't see how the latter would be a problem to make public.
Thucydides (864 D(B))

Wow its been a long time since I last looked on here - do rather miss this place.
Congratulations to all FK for surviving so long as an active mod, and good luck not going in sane. If I can ever get my head back on top of my degree I'll try and return, but mod/admin time just seems to eat away hours of your life!
ps: Merry Christmas :)

Ron Paul is officially an idiot...
I just watched him tell Jay Leno he is against seatbelt laws. His argument that people have a right to do with their own body is all fine and good, but seatlbelts keep the driver behind the wheel and in better copntrol of their car, therbye protecting the lives of others. He has just proven he is an idiot that can't be put in power.

Everyone's Holiday Reading? (Suggestions?)
Well, it's the Holidays--sorry, it's "CHRISTMAS TIME," for all those "War on Christmas" folks--and I know we have a lot of avid readers on the site...and I just finished the two novels I had left over from my semester's worth of free reading ("The Brothers Karamazov," which was decent but 200 pages too long, and "Tess of the D'urbervilles," which was good, if not a tad anti-climactic) and I was wondering--what's everyone reading? Suggestions?
