Was John Pemberton a seer?
Really, could you possibly imagine a better name for a drink than Coca-Cola in regard to marketing potential of China? They say Jules Verne nailed all those means of transport we use today several decades in advance but Pemberton is the real deal here. Coca-Cola. Brilliant.

NFL Pick 'Em: Week 8
Inside the updated totals after Week 7 will be posted...as soon as I add them (or someone who already has it added up wants to post if, if they're faster.)

As we're at the half-way point of the season, lots of teams on bye and another week for blow-outs it seems. With the Packers on bye, who will dominate the weak...so--who'll win? PICK 'EM!

"Oddly enough, NOW who's being the sports elitist, claiming only a certain, elect, elite markets are "real" sports markets, while the rest are mediocre to abysmal to crap...hm?"

I'm not saying that at all. All I said was that hot weather teams tend to have poor attendance, and provided quite a lot of evidence to back that up. Florida is particularly notorious for not supporting their professional franchises, even when they win.

"What happened to "according to NEED?""

You're going to redbait me in a sports thread?

"Yeah...no, sorry, the A's are not more iconic than the Dodgers, well-known baeball
"fact," the "Six Crown Jewel Teams" are unofficially the Yankees, Red Sox, Cardinals, Cubs, Dodgers, and Giants"

I was merely pointing out that the As, despite being a dominant franchise not so very long ago (and a regular playoff contender with the Angels until the last 5 or so years), have pathetic fan support. When I was growing up people were enthralled with that team. Mark McGuire, Jose Canseco, Dave Stewart, Dennis Eckersley, these guys were the kings of baseball. I know they're not more "iconic" than the Dodgers, but the reputations of the Dodgers & Giants, and why they have a fierce rivalry, is largely a product of their play when they were in NY.

"but for FSU, because it suits your cobled-together-argument based on a flimsy premise, tHEN it's OK? Sure...whatever you say..."

Evidently you didn't bother to read where I pointed out capacity for a whole slew of teams. Marlins have bad attendance no matter how you slice the data. Sun Life Stadium is not very big in terms of baseball capacity, so you can't use that excuse. For baseball it only seats 38,000.

"And I like how you say "only" 40,000, byt the way...yeah, try and get 40K to watch YOUU play a sport, and then you can knock such a perfectly-respectable attendance figure."

40,000 people for a top ranked college football program with the biggest draw in the country in Andrew Luck? Yeah that's terrible. *East Carolina* football gets 50,000 to their games, that's how bad Stanford's attendance is. And East Carolina isn't even remotely in a metropolitan area, while Stanford is. You have to measure attendance by what everybody else is doing in the sport.

"-Let's go pro with this for a moment--the Expos were relocated from Quebec--doesn't get much colder and Northern than Canada!--to D.C...how does your theory work there?"

The Expos were screwed by their own ownership, but yeah baseball never took off there. It's a hockey town. The commitment of Canadian fans for sports though I think is exemplified by the fact that the Winnipeg Jets sold out immediately when they put tickets on sale, and by the fact that Quebec Nordique gear is still sold everywhere in Quebec City even though their franchise was moved over a decade ago.

" What about the Lions' base?"

Dude, Detroit is the #1 sports city in America for a reason. They show up for games. For any and all sports. How many cities have a franchise in every single major sport that aren't named New York or Chicago? Not many. All it took was for Detroit to win 3 or 4 games and the stadium was filled to the brim with fans screaming so much that the opposing team had something like 9 false start penalties. You couldn't get that level of enthusiasm if the Dolphins were 4-0, or the Bucs were 4-0, or the Falcons were 4-0. Ask any coach who played vs the Lions when they were remotely good, and they'll tell you how much Lions fans show up for games. The Lions have suffered more than any other franchise, that type of suffering takes its toll. But I've seen Lion supporters in Columbus even when they're bad.

"but talk about moving the New York Islanders, and WHOA! that's a franchise too far! "

I didn't talk about moving anybody. I just said the two Florida teams are a joke and attendance in the South is poor. Which isn't even disputed. Why are you so agitated about this? I didn't even say anything about the Islanders. Why are you railing about stuff I'm not even saying? (BTW Islander attendance, bad as it is, is still better than Phoenix and Dallas. Two teams that tend to play a heck of a lot better than the NYI).

"The Detroit Lions have 0 SB titles and have never even been to a Conference title game."

And yet they're loved more than the Tampa Bay Bucs or Jacksonville Jaguars, who have been to conference titles and/or superbowls.

"Green Bay, a far, far, far, FAR smaller and, by all conventional measures, inferior market, has been to 5 SBs, winning 4 of them, has the only undefeated team in the NFL as of this week, numerous HOFers, AND has the distinction of having the SB trophy named after their iconic coach Vince Lombardi."

Wisconsin people love their sports teams, period. People show up to Milwaukee games even if they're not that great. They're always near the top in attendance. The Bucks do quite well considering they never have winning teams. If all it took was winning, Florida teams wouldn't have problems filling their stadiums, but yet they do.

"The Ducks, sharks, and Kings each have claims to fame, each have iconic players"

Which is why it is shocking that nobody shows up to their games.

Last year - the Ducks were barely above my Bluejackets in attendance - 26th. The Sharks were 17th and they're always good! The Kings were 14th.

Thanks for helping me out.

"-Minnesota Twins: Frequently having monetary woes (MUST STAY...but, again, still...)"

They're top 5 in attendance despite being the worst team in baseball. I'd say they're fine.

"-Buffalo Sabres: Constantly hurt by the NY/NJ/TOR markets (should stay, but still)"

Hurt? They're drubbing every Californian team in getting fans to the games (as well as beating the Rangers). You don't know what you're talking about. Buffalo Sabres are a devoted fanbase. They show up to games. New York state is a hockey crazy state, at least in the upstate area. The world stops for several of my relatives when the Sabres are on.

"Buffalo Bills: Contemplating a move to Toronto (shouldn't happen imo, but still...)"

You need your head checked if you think that fan base doesn't show up. Even with a decade of futility and a horrible horrible economy (much worse than San Diego!) they show up. They're one of the smallest markets and have a medicore product most years, and yet some of these years this past decade they've been among the top 10 in attendance. By comparison, look at the Raiders. What franchise is more "iconic" than they? What franchise has more of a "legacy"? Yet look at who shows up to their games this past decade. Nobody.

"or else tell Green Bay they're losing their team"

Why would they lose their team? Wisconsinites love their team so much they *own* it! I guarantee you Lambeau had a packed stadium even in mediocre years.

I should say Lions fans were enthused about this season before they even began winning. Which, again, says a lot. Lions with a fighting chance = filled stadium. Raiders went to a Superbowl and they still couldn't get people to the games the next year.
SacredDigits (102 D)
29 Oct 11 UTC
Speaking as a long term Buffalo Sabres fan, we never had problems filling out home games. And when they're in the playoffs, people stand outside the arena to watch the game on live feed. When this concept was floated for the SUPER BOWL, people thought it was ridiculous. But Sabres fans stand outside in the cold for it. New York and New Jersey are far enough away that it's like saying 49er attendance hurts the Chargers. Toronto is closer, but the Leafs and Sabres are DEFINITELY distinct fanbases. Now that the Sabres have an owner dedicated to winning, it only goes up from here. It doesn't matter how large the metro area is as long as they get asses in seats, both the Packers and Sabres prove that. And Bills. They only play a game in Toronto to pull that fanbase down to them. Not because they're thinking of winning.

And Detroit, my current home, was hit by the recession more than most and yet we still showed up to see a winless team more than people in Jacksonville showed up to see the Jaguars. We all love the Lions, no matter what. And are thankful for the Wings so that we have at least one consistently good team.

True story, when hockey teams were more or less carted up and sent down south for ridiculous reasons, the Sabres pushed Buffalo (successfully) to list rural Cattaraugus County (where I grew up) to be considered part of the metro area so that their metro population hit a certain goal. That was the only thing that anyone had issue with about the franchise, and local politicians were more than happy to solve it. And check that out. Not attendance, not merchandise sales, nothing actually important, just number of people in the metro area.

Ah, so many things to comment on.

Re: Expos - It was also hurt by the Canadian dollar at the time but, yeah, I think baseball would fair better in Vancouver than Montreal if you're looking for a 2nd Canadian team.

Re: Sabres being hurt by Toronto market - We are their market. You can't get tickets to games here so you do the next best thing *shudder* driver to Buffalo. But Buffalo is a hockey town to some extent so it would be a huge loss to see them move.
What could hurt them is another southern Ontario team. Especially one in a city like Hamilton where people don't necessarily support the Leafs

Re: realignment - I thought that it would be possible to give teams off days in order to avoid the constant interleague play. It would be trickier and probably necessitate more 2day series but it should be doable.

Bills in Toronto - I don't care which team it is, I'm pretty sure Toronto could support an NFL team.
SacredDigits (102 D)

..."thinking of winning" should be "thinking of moving" but it kind of speaks to the inner Bill fan in me that I categorically deny them thinking of winning.

Really? They can't even bother supporting the Bills in the Toronto game every year. Bills players hate having to play in Toronto.
Yonni (136 D(S))
29 Oct 11 UTC
Why would Toronto support the Bills when they come to town?
Putin33 (111 D)
29 Oct 11 UTC
Because they're supposedly 15% of the fan base. Because it makes more sense than supporting the Washington Redskins or Miami Dolphins.
Putin33 (111 D)
29 Oct 11 UTC
Oh and because it's supposed to be a 'home game'.
SacredDigits (102 D)
29 Oct 11 UTC
Meanwhile, Tampa Bay seems to enjoy hosting a home game in London, because people will actually show up to it.
Yonni (136 D(S))
30 Oct 11 UTC
Most people I know around here support a huge assortment of teams and only ever go to Bills games because it's the closest NFL team.
The fact that it counts as a home game for the Bills is complete BS for them but has no bearing on who we cheer for.
Putin33 (111 D)
30 Oct 11 UTC
Right, because you all have such close intimate ties with other cities. You remind me of colleagues of mine who support the Minnesota Vikings despite having no ties to Minnesota and not being able to see any of the games.

Yonni (136 D(S))
30 Oct 11 UTC
That's exactly it. Nobody really has that close ties to any NFL teams. Hence the apathy towards the Bills coming to town (coupled with high priced and them playing in the Skydome).
If we got an NFL team, they'd get tons of support. You can't judge it by how we treat a
Buffalo team.
Putin33 (111 D)
30 Oct 11 UTC
You're 2 hours away from Buffalo...You do realize most fans actually have to travel a little bit to see their team because they don't host one? There are reams of people who are season ticket holders who live East of Syracuse. There are reams of people from Columbus who go to Cleveland Browns games. Whose games do you get on tv besides Buffalo's on a regular basis? How do these "fans" actually support these far flung cities in any meaningful way?

I'm reminded of the Toronto attitude every time I come across a Bluejays fan in upstate NY. It's a completely one-sided relationship. Toronto people seem too parochial to bother cultivating a fan base outside of their metropolitan area. Which might explain why their baseball attendance suffers.
Draugnar (0 DX)
30 Oct 11 UTC
Columbus traitors! They should come down to Cinci and root for the Reds and the Bengals, especially this year! :-)
Putin33 (111 D)
30 Oct 11 UTC
There are plenty of Bengal/Reds supporters too. The point is they aren't supporting the Eagles or Falcons.
Putin33 (111 D)
30 Oct 11 UTC
And I ask every Steelers fan around these parts to kindly explain to me what the hell is the matter with them.
Yonni (136 D(S))
30 Oct 11 UTC
We get all the games on TV here. Especially if you have one of the more expansive TV packages. But, like I said, people tend not to have close ties to NFL teams here.

Also, I'm sure you can understand how someone from Columbus may have closer ties to another Ohio based team than a Torontonian would have to a team in another country. Especially one that we've had a hockey rivalry with in the past.

I don't really get your comment about Toronto not cultivating a fan base outside of Toronto. Like you said the Jays are popular in upstate NY and tend to be the most popular team across Canada. The Leafs clearly have appeal across Ontario. The Raptors have struggled with attendance lately but it's not surprising considering how god awful they are (and have been forever) and it's basketball.

And about the BJ attendance. We were the first to get 4 million fans in a season and still 1 of only 4 teams to do it. Maybe being one of the only teams to not make the playoffs since 1993 would do it. But attendance is on the upswing as the team gets more exciting. Besides, 22k isn't anything to scoff at - it just looks bad in our giant desolate stadium.

Also, you've obviously never made the drive from Toronto to Buffalo because with traffic and the boarder 2 hours would be miracle.

I'm not even sure what your argument is anymore.
Toronto can't support an NFL team because Torontonians don't support Buffalo?
-I think that speaks more of Buffalo than Toronto

Toronto can't support an NFL team because Toronto gets no support outside of its Metropolitan area?
-Besides the fact that Toronto is the 6th largest city in USA/Canada, an NFL team in Toronto would surely attract support from around Ontario and Canada

Toronto can't support an NFL team because the Jays attendance is down?
-It's not even that bad. Especially considering how futile they've been for the past 18 years.
Putin33 (111 D)
30 Oct 11 UTC
No, the Jays are not that popular in upstate NY. Despite having long associations with Syracuse via AAA. They now are busy cultivating the all important Vegas demographic. I was just saying that I don't see why any western NYer would bother supporting Toronto in anything.

I mean I guess you can be proud that you're 25/32 teams in terms of attendance. And the Jays haven't been futile, they just play in the strongest division in the league. I mean in 2010 they were 85-77 and that was good enough for 11 games behind the division leader. They've had really good players like Bautista, Halliday, etc. You'd also think with the Yankees and Red Sox constantly coming into town the Jays would have higher attendance. Indeed when the Yankees play games against the Royals or some other bottom feeder that's usually their highest attended games of the season. If anything the Jays should have an advantage in attendance.

"We get all the games on TV here. Especially if you have one of the more expansive TV packages. "

Must be nice. I didn't expect every citizen of Toronto to have Direct TV. I guess I won't be hearing any complaints about Canadian taxes ever again.

My argument is that I have little respect for "fans" who don't support their local teams. And I have little faith that turncoats will show up if a team is placed in their city. And yes, despite border traffic, 100 miles is local.
Putin33 (111 D)

Yonni (136 D(S))

"I was just saying that I don't see why any western NYer would bother supporting Toronto in anything."
Right, now we're seeing eye-to-eye on things. It's mutual. Hence the lack of support for the Bills.

The fact that we can look at an 87 win season and say that's the high mark of almost 20 years is depressing for just about everyone other than a Pirates fan.

Sorry, I think I misspoke there. NBC and Fox (or whatever American network shows them) are part of the most basic cable packages. I can spend all Sunday flicking between different games.
"I guess I won't be hearing any complaints about Canadian taxes ever again."
Jesus, and you complain about red-baiting? I've never once said anything about our taxes being too high.

22k is one of the lowest avg. attendances ever since the Jays moved to the Skydome. It's not good, you're right. But I don't think you can use that as a barometer for how an NFL team would be received here.

Our biggest obstacle at the moment, if we were presented with an option, would be the lack of a stadium.

And, for fuck sake. Buffalo, NY, USA is not local to people from Toronto, ON, Canada.
Draugnar (0 DX)

As a Bills fan and an Argos fan, I hope an NFL team never comes to Toronto. Also, Western New York is one of the best sports regions in the country, if not the best. Bills and Sabres have great fanbases despite not a lot of recent success, Rochester is always getting named as the best minor league city in the USA and Syracuse obviously has great tradition in basketball and football.

Also, the Peace Bridge and the other big crossings often have huge lines.

Six of the Best
Politicians get a lot of bad press in the modern age, and sadly a lot of it is deserved. The vast majority can be safely ignored without any risk of missing anything remotely interesting or useful to our lives. But in the sea of mediocrity float a few stars, a small number of voices that are worth noting. My question is: which politicians still have the power to make you stop and listen? Lets see a list of six of your best!
