Was John Pemberton a seer?
Really, could you possibly imagine a better name for a drink than Coca-Cola in regard to marketing potential of China? They say Jules Verne nailed all those means of transport we use today several decades in advance but Pemberton is the real deal here. Coca-Cola. Brilliant.

Id like to question the random country chooser on the site.
I have got austria and italy more than average recently. Makes me wonder if the mods are rigging it so id leave... :P But really, for those of you familiar with the phenomenon, is the generator truly random like sites like random.org or is it pseudorandom? Does anyone know?

NFL Pick 'Em: Week 8
Inside the updated totals after Week 7 will be posted...as soon as I add them (or someone who already has it added up wants to post if, if they're faster.)

As we're at the half-way point of the season, lots of teams on bye and another week for blow-outs it seems. With the Packers on bye, who will dominate the weak...so--who'll win? PICK 'EM!

How do you handle the minefield of introducing your mates to the world of Diplomacy whilst staying within the rules? Are there any guidelines that mods / experienced players can offer on this?

Snow Storm
How did people fair in the snow storm? We lost power for about 24 hours. Roads are still pretty cluttered with trees and most of the surrounding towns (that don't get power from the University) are still out of power.

Cancelling the Masters
Unless someone has talked to TrustMe or compiled a list on their own and knows what's needed, I plan on cancelling any paused Masters game this Thursday. I'm not really willing to reverse engineer each game to figure out what he was planning. It's been left in the fridge too long, time to throw it out.

Jesus=Socialist?
Someone I happen to see nearly everyday insists that Jesus was a socialist and/or advocated the philosophical and moral grounds/justifications for instituting socialism. I oppose socialism, but am not particularly religious, and thus not really angered by this statement; nevertheless, many Christians I know have been angered by this claim. Discussion/debate?

Six of the Best
Politicians get a lot of bad press in the modern age, and sadly a lot of it is deserved. The vast majority can be safely ignored without any risk of missing anything remotely interesting or useful to our lives. But in the sea of mediocrity float a few stars, a small number of voices that are worth noting. My question is: which politicians still have the power to make you stop and listen? Lets see a list of six of your best!

Older Country Music
TO: Webdiplomacy.net
FROM: Lando Calrissian
My favourite kind of music is not necessarily country but the best stuff always has that kind of a twang to it. I am a huge fan of bands like Delta Spirit, Middle Brother, Cave Singers, Phosphorescent, Blitzen Trapper, $100, Elliott Brood, etc. The list goes on to include some radio stuff like Randy Houser, Luke Bryan and Jason Aldean. However, one area where I don’t know much about is the older stuff.

I have a record player and a very good collection of classic rock stuff but nothing anywhere close to country. I had to go out and buy the Band and Jimmy Buffett myself! So I want to add to this collection. And I know I can buy the new stuff on vinyl, but I don’t want to spend a fortunate.

So my question for this community is: when I am crate digging, which singers/bands should I be looking for? And any particular LPs?

Thanks in advance.

My Dad got into country when I was a kid. hated most of it, but if you need some names with good, old-school country:

Willie Nelson, of course....for that real twang sund
Ricky Scaggs...one of the first "rock"-style country bands....he was OK.
Johnny Cash...nuff said

There's my 3 if you want some decent old-school.

Nice, good names to add to the list. I have never heard of Ricky Scaggs.

Let's talk about country music in general here I guess. I gave some recommendations, does anyone else have any?
Have you listened to Joe Ely? My favorite album is "Lord of the Highway". You can check him out on YouTube.
I found "the road goes on forever" and it is fucking awesome.

Just YouTubed some Skaggs frommy childhood. Almost cried and hid in my bedroom before my wife pulled me back to reality.

Damn I hates me some country music....
This guy is great, thanks Spell.
My moniker here is actually a song title from a guy named Peter Case. He is actually my favorite musician...but he doesn't fit your description. He is more folk and "Dylan"-sque. His youtube videos don't do his music justice....but if you find that type of music appealling...he is awesome.

Lando, check out John Prine and Townes Van Zandt. Townes especially has some amazing stuff, his Live at the Old Quarter is an incredible album.

On more recent stuff, you ever listen to the Felice Bros?
I quite like the Felice Brothers, but I haven't heard all of their stuff. Thanks for the other ones. I've heard of Townes a lot but never listened. I will check out that album.

Gram Parsons also has some great stuff.

The Felice Brothers are amazing. Particularly so live. Really like a of bunch of the bands you've mentioned there so I'm going to check out the ones I don't know. If you're into that stuff I'd suggest checking out Fleet Foxes, Beach House, These United States among others. There's also great local stuff like Dan Mangan (well, not local but Canadian), Great Lake Swimmers, Strumbellas...

I'm not sure what kind of old timey stuff you're looking for but I'd suggest checking out some of the classic bluegrass artists - Doc Watson, Flatt & Scruggs, John Hartford, Old and in the Way.

@Yonni: I saw Dan Mangan a few weeks ago, he was awesome. I didn't know him before but I've listening to his album nonstop since the show. Also saw One Hundred Dollars and Elliot Brood last weekend. Really fun concert. You should check them out if you havent already, I think they are both from Toronto.

As for older country, I also don't know a lot but Towne van Zandt is good. Also, some of Neil Young's albums are pretty much country. After the Gold Rush, Harvest Moon, Prairie Wind and Old Ways are all really good.

as far as old stuff, you got me, but as far as some good current country, you got:

Toby Keith- good for obnoxiously over patriotic songs that you want to hear sometimes like on the anniversary of 9/11

Miranda Lambert- Personally I like T Swift, but a lot of people don't, and I think Miranda Lambert is a similar type of musician without the almost annoyingly overplayedness Swift's songs get on the radio. Her last album was real country woman too.

Kenny Chesney- he just always seems to come out with good stuff imo

Tim McGraw, Garth Brooks, Faith Hill, and others are always pleasures to listen to as well.

I have never really been a big country listener. The closest I have come to liking country was alt country, bands like Wilco or Wiskeytown I must admit Iike Dolly Parton and Kenny Rogers.

I cool mix of old country and new music is Loretta Lynn's Van Lear Rose that she did with Jack White.
