I... don't understand cricket at all.
Putin33 (111 D)
22 Feb 11 UTC
We do. It was once believed we were on the brink of being in the cup (the 2007 cup) and played in several one day internationals (ODIs), unfortunately our domestic cricket is run by incompetents who can't ever agree on anything, and we end up being disqualified/banned from international cricket for brief periods of time. We have a team, but it's still a ways off from being in the world cup, especially if they cut out the minnows (small teams) that they say they're going to do.
largeham (149 D)
22 Feb 11 UTC
I do hope they don't cut out the minnows, they can be quite refreshing to watch. I see Ricky Ponting is advocating removing them, but then we all knew he was an asshole.
Over here, aside from one article, in the Herald Sun of all places (owned by Murdoch), everyone is talking as if Australia's win was some great achievement.
Putin33 (111 D)
22 Feb 11 UTC
Cricket is an easy game to understand, compared to say - football (US) or rugby union.
Putin33 (111 D)
22 Feb 11 UTC
And this is why we don't cut out the minnows. 292 runs for Netherlands? England is behind by 96 with less than 15 overs! Huge upset in the making.
Putin33 (111 D)
22 Feb 11 UTC
England needs 29 runs in less than 4 overs...

What a finish. I have to admit I'm glad England won in the end. But good on Netherlands for giving England all they could handle.
Putin33 (111 D)
23 Feb 11 UTC
Pakistan is in trouble. Just 18 runs in 8 overs and their two opening batsmen are out. Then again I thought England would surely go down in defeat yesterday after Netherlands thunderous batting and that didn't happen.
Putin33 (111 D)
23 Feb 11 UTC
Ha, I say that and then all of a sudden Pakistan has 40 runs through 10....
largeham (149 D)
23 Feb 11 UTC
Lol, I remember Pakistan lost to Ireland last time.
Putin33 (111 D)
23 Feb 11 UTC
And then their coach died or something, it was a mess. Ireland is good though, they've been owning Bangladesh lately, hope they do something for the Associate Members.
ava2790 (232 D(S))
25 Feb 11 UTC
Ok guys it's clear the the Irish aren't really minnows in this tournament. First, the embarrassingly near call that they gave England earlier this week and now the fact that they're toppling hosts Bangladesh in this game. Either it's just the subcontinent pitches working in their favor (and theirs alone) or they're just a damn good side this time around. I want to see these guys in the next round.

Also, India vs. England on Sunday - super emotional match and lots at stake. A must-win for both teams considering how Australia's raking in the points in the other group.
Putin33 (111 D)
25 Feb 11 UTC
Ireland has been the best of the minnows, looks like they're not going to pull it out vs Bangladesh though :(
Putin33 (111 D)
25 Feb 11 UTC
Australia decided they still want their 4th straight trophy. A weak Australian side is still better, it seems, than most normal sides. Their dismantling of the Kiwis was textbook. What happens though when they play Pakistan and Sri Lanka?
Putin33 (111 D)
25 Feb 11 UTC
Shows you how poor Bangladesh's cricket has been that they're this jubilant about barely defeating an Associate Member at home. Poor Ireland, it's going to be really difficult to get out of the group stage now.
ava2790 (232 D(S))
25 Feb 11 UTC
Better still - what happens when Australia plays India? Or South Africa?

I'll bet money on that.
Putin33 (111 D)
25 Feb 11 UTC
Hopefully that won't need to happen!
Putin33 (111 D)
25 Feb 11 UTC
India and S. Africa need to play a strong side before I jump on the bandwagon. S. Africa's win over Windies was ok but not stellar, and India gave up a lot of runs to a Bangladeshi team that could barely get 200 on Ireland. So we'll see.

Zimbabwe is coming back to test cricket this year. They were not banned, they took a voluntary suspension.

You see pretty much the second half of the games, since they typically begin at 4 am and usually end around 11.

I am looking forward to this Pakistan-Sri Lanka match up. Maybe Pakistan is really back. If so, they are capable of taking the whole thing. The favorites better watch out.

Fox News
This is one of the saddest and funniest (in a twisted sort of way) videos I have ever seen:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RClJ6vK9x_4
This seemed very apropos of the debate in the NPR thread re: Fox's reliability compared with other stations. This seems to me to provide the definitive solution to that debate.
Thoughts?

Zero Tolerance or Turn The Other Cheek?
I recently had an encounter with an annoying little twerp in which he crossed (in my opinion at least) the metagaming line. The question is should I bother to mention it to our already overworked mods? Should we attempt to crush all damaging forms of metagaming with an iron first, or should we ignore the more minor forms of cheating?

Performance issues
As a newbie I am not sure if I am doing something wrong or not, but I am seeing two performance problems that are quite irritating. I time out readying orders, and also every time I change pages on the site there is a delay of 10 seconds or so before I can do anything. Is this normal?

Proper English in diplomatic correspondence.
What is your opinion on using proper English in diplomatic correspondence as opposed to shorthand (like u = you, wanna = want to etc.) I am usually less likely to trust a shorthand player and prefer full English communications.

Mostly Irrelevant Question
So, I didn't think this would ever come up, but:

If you have an SC left, but it's not one of your home centres, and your last unit is destroyed, and then the game ends, what goes on your record? And are you considered defeated immediately? Or not until someone walks over to your SC and sits there over the winter?

"Rango" is Lousy
I like Johnny Depp. I think "Gilbert Grape," "Pirates otC I," "Ed Wood" and "Sleepy Hollow" are all very good. But I saw "Rango" today, misled by the generally good reviews, and found it dark, vulgar, violent, slow and fatally self-aware in an ironic, in-jokey way. If you loved it, peace to you. I did not.

Country assignments
A group that I play with are moving our correspondence game to web diplomacy. Normally, we switch country assignments between games so people don't have to play as the same country twice in a row. Is there a way to manually select who plays as what country or can it only be done randomly?

Readying orders.
I'm in an anonymous gunboat (might be a tautology, still new-ish) at the moment with someone who saves his orders but never readies them, as there are 24 hour phases where most people are finished after around 10 or so this this could be getting quite annoying if it continues throughout the game. Just wondering if there's any way to communicate that it would be good for them to ready them?

Fear or greed?
The Sage of Omaha once said that investors should try to be "fearful when others are greedy and greedy when others are fearful." Which tendency, if either, tends to govern your Dip play, especially when you divert from a long-range plan (i.e. to stab earlier than you had hoped)?

This Time On Philosiophy Weekly: "What Do YOU Think Heaven And Hell Are Like, Then?"
That's a question I got on the bus this week, and it's been on my mind ever since, sort of simmering there...just when I think I'm happily ready to watch a movie, on comes Hamlet and instantly he's talking about this and that about death and there the question is again, so I put it to you as well, WebDip members--play Dante. If YOU could have your perfect, 100% version of what the two "afterlives" are, what would each be like? Is it anything to be excited about?
