Variant idea: All dark press.
I would like to try a game with all dark press. That is, the country making a comment is not identified by the system. More specific ideas inside.

What is a process cycle?
I have been jumping into some live games and when 7 players join the "game will start on next process cycle" notice comes up. Usually this is no big deal. I just jumped into one that doesn't start for 1:35. When does the process cycle come up?

Contract game riddle.
Here's a riddle about contract diplomacy. If you don't know binding contracts can be signed between parties in the form of [ ].

@Iceray0

But when the house doesn't blow up at :01 then you didn't know for sure that he'd blow it up. Random guesses didn't help you if you have to be certain.
Iceray0 (266 D(B))

If you think what I'm saying is wrong then France can move there at any point, if England is to be sure about the move in by France then he has to guess the season that France will do it, right? If so then he has a 1/100 chance of guessing correctly. In effect England gets one possible guess at the season otherwise what I'm saying is 100% correct.
Paulsalomon27 (731 D)
09 Jan 10 UTC
first of all in the bomb case that is a flawed argument because time is an uncountable continuum and guessing can't successfully cover all cases anyway. for instance half a second or pi seconds later.

more importantly by far, the contract doesn't say you can't move in if England accurately guesses that you will be moving. It says France can't move if England "can be certain..." guessing means you're not certain.
Let's say there's a button that, if set off at the right time, it will dismantle the bomb. If not pushed at the right time, the bomb will go off.
Iceray0 (266 D(B))
09 Jan 10 UTC
@Zaza it's not a random guess you logically break it down to each "turn" or "second" in this case and say that it's that one, you can never go wrong with that because if you guess every possible "season" or "second" then he can't move there ever.
Paulsalomon27 (731 D)
09 Jan 10 UTC
but England is smart enough to know he can rule out the 100th season. So that reduces his "guesses" if youre thinking of it that way, to 99....
Iceray0 (266 D(B))
09 Jan 10 UTC
@Paul then Figles solution doesn't work because then England can never be "sure" of Frances move in.
The question we're looking at now is: Do we interpret it from the present to the future, the future to the present, or both? If both then the contract can't be broken. If from future to present, the contract can't be broken. If from present to future then you can break it and when the the 100 seasons are up the contract is void because it turned paradoxical.
Iceray0 (266 D(B))
09 Jan 10 UTC
so he has a 1/99 chance of getting it correct instead of a 1/100 chance... big difference there
Paulsalomon27 (731 D)
09 Jan 10 UTC
and likewise can rule out season 99, bettering his chances to 1/98....

until at last he knows he must move on season 1...

BUT HE CAN'T, because England is now 100% certain.
Iceray0 (266 D(B))
09 Jan 10 UTC
Based off the contract made in the now, because we can't see into the future so we must look at it from that point of view, France can move into the EC at any point in the 100 seasons, England gets one guess if he guesses wrong then he's fucked.
Paulsalomon27 (731 D)
09 Jan 10 UTC
@Zaza. the contract doesn't become void on the 100th season. It has only become breached by France.
Iceray0 (266 D(B))
09 Jan 10 UTC
You can't rule out the 99th season of the 98th season or any seasons at all
Well, then it makes sense then! He must pay the consequences of the breached agreement. Well played by England.
Paulsalomon27 (731 D)
09 Jan 10 UTC
im hopping in the shower, but consider the contract thats exactly the same but says must enter in one of the next TWO seasons, but must not move if the other can be certain he will move in the phase.

Which one does he move in on?
Iceray0 (266 D(B))
09 Jan 10 UTC
By your logic he can eliminate every phase except the first and make England certain but what if France doesn't move in the first phase? Then England is fucked because it can't eliminate anything, it never could in the real world anyways but putting aside real world logic.
Iceray0 (266 D(B))
09 Jan 10 UTC
That was at the first contract this entire thread is pointless because there is no paradox.
He moves in the first because England can't know that he'll be moving in there. England can't know if he'll breach the contract or not.
Iceray0 (266 D(B))
09 Jan 10 UTC
England has to be 100% certain France will move there that round but he has no idea what the future brings therefor he can never be 100% sure allowing France to move in at any time.
The moral of the contract-don't paradox your contracts!
Iceray0 (266 D(B))
09 Jan 10 UTC
There is no paradox in the contract.
Paulsalomon27 (731 D)
09 Jan 10 UTC
do we all agree that England can be 100% certain that France will move on season 1?
The question then is what about the next season. Well on season 2, after he didnt move in season 1 (because he couldnt) England runs the same process over again, ruling out seasons 1 by 1 from 100 to season 2.
Paulsalomon27 (731 D)
09 Jan 10 UTC
there is no paradox, just the inevitability of breach if notice to end the DMZ is given.
Paulsalomon27 (731 D)
09 Jan 10 UTC
the moral of the story is theres more than one way to write an ever-lasting DMZ.

I am in 3 right now, and I love them, but I am not sure I can start another one right now. i am in an embarassing number of games. I have standards for rules and terms if you want to use them for your game though.
Iceray0 (266 D(B))
09 Jan 10 UTC
@Paul then England is doing EXACTLY what I said in my alternate situation, literally EXACTLY what I said.
Paulsalomon27 (731 D)
09 Jan 10 UTC
it's not that he is guessing on day 1. that's where yours was wrong. He is not guessing ever. He is certain that because of the "must" part and ruled out cases he can be "CERTAIN" that day 1 is the day. but it can't be. It is not exactly a paradox, just a contract that cant be fulfilled.
Paulsalomon27 (731 D)
09 Jan 10 UTC
did you think through the 2 season case? that one makes it really obvious how it isnt about guessing.
Iceray0 (266 D(B))
09 Jan 10 UTC
In mine you don't guess you logically break it down to smaller components, look at it and determine that if you cover every possible point then he can never blow your house up.

Avatar the movie
Awesome, simply awesome. I saw it in 2 D first and was so impressed I went back to see it in 3 D. It is fantastic. The 3 D effects extend to the computer displays the characters are using - they have depth too. And what appeared to be "normal" photos on a wall in the 2 D version were given depth too. Amazing!
