Best decade ever?
It has to be, and by a larger margin than usual too. Life expectancy, economic development, technological and scientific advance, it's all looking up. If you look past unfortunate events and special cases to the big picture it's hard to be anything but optimistic
Anyone want to rain on my parade? Anyone else feeling optimistic? Happy new year either way

Hang on though, the decade doesn't end until 2011, am I not correct? The millennium began on Jan 1st 2001, so why is the decade any different??

Unless we're talking about the 00's I suppose... but still it just doesn't sit right with me. There was no year 0 lol

No there wasn't, but you're just trying to be difficult :P
most people count decades by the way the first 3 digits work, so this would be 2000->2009
Yes its wrong, but its what everyone does.

I quite liked it, but then I've not got much to compare it to. Would have been pretty awesome to live in the 70s. Saying that, the digital age has been good so far, and we have the advantage of all the good music from all the decades previous.

I'm glad some of you are optimistic... I'm cynical and getting older!

Bad side - For me it boils down to the Twin Towers burning, New Orleans under water, and W overseeing it all. I think it was a rather sad decade.

Good side - The technology is awesome!

I also got a "real" job this decade, so there's that.

The 80's were clearly the best decade, since that was the decade in which I was born.

All joking aside, the past several decades have been some of the best, because every country in the world has been stealing from future generations and going into massive debt. Decades will start being pretty awful as soon as we realize that we have to pay that debt.

It's all in how you look at it. The 60's? Well, in America the baby boom generation is that group and they now control everything so the rest of us have been bombarded with programs shouting there greatness but I'd have to disagree. While some things were good in the civil rights movement you must also consider the Vietnam War, Cuba, Drugs, and the overall destruction of the society. Values that had served America for years were broken and thrown aside and I don't think you can honestly say society is better for it. The worst was the Drug culture that came from it. It destroyed a movement and led to the drug addicted culture that exists today.

I doubt anyone will name the 70's or 80's in seriousness.

The 90's and 00's are about the same. Technologically we leaped forward. The wealthy got wealthier and the poor are still poor. Environmental problems increased, wars and genocides have escalated and the weather has been bad. The worst part of it for me is that we have seen the agenda of the New World Order really begin to secure it's grip around the world. The merging currencies, the worldwide economic problems which have helped the banking system to grow, Terrorism which has enabled governments to take away rights of people around the world and start the first moves of a resource grab at the expense of thousand and soon to be millions of people.

Nope, to me while entertainment in our prosperous nations is getting better, the state of the world and the hopes for the future have gotten worse.

Happy New Year!

@C-K "We did not start the fire" Every generation blames and scorns the prior generation. It's like a phase all generations go through.

80s & 90s way better than 00s. America got its undies in a bundle in the 00s. Fortunately that narrative development only allows denouement, catharsis and then ultimately a new, exciting and engaging narrative for the next decade. Wooo!
1901-1910 was the best decade. It inspired a really cool board game.

19 to10BC was the best decade. Before that trouble maker from Judea was born. I aways wanted to worship at the Temple of Venus.;)

@warsprite. I'm not blaming that generation I'm just stating facts as I see them. I was born in '72 and my parents are a part of that generation and I've grown up greatly influenced by them. When I was young I bought in to a lot of it but now that I'm older and living in Europe the past seems much smaller than it did. And when I look at the differences of societies and wonder why my thoughts return to the 60's. I don't blame them as I did much the same in the 90's but looking back to the root of the problems it begins then. In the 60's. But I totally agree with the worship of Venus! I guess if we want to look for the very beginning of all of our problems it would be good to read the Bible. But that is too far back to change. As is the 60's for that matter.

This most important thing for us to think about now is the consolidation of the world economies and the power that they weld. Economic slavery and exploitation does exist. We're living in it. Fortunately for us we all exist in the upper half of it. We have food, clean water, no wars being fought where we live unless you're from Israel. But with the formation of economical groups like the E.U., A.U., soon to arrive N.A.U. and the A.U. we should all be concerned. The next step is the unification of these currencies into one currency. Those of us living in countries that have already exchanged currencies for a "world" currency already understands how that works. In Italy, they turned 500,00 lire into 5 Euros. But this was mathematically incorrect. It should have been 2.50e. It was only evaluated this way when we got paid but for everything else it was calculated as equal. Therefore the standard of living has been cut in half but those who owned property suddenly doubled their profits. And who owns the most property? The banks. A similar situation is happening in the USA. The banks created the economic crisis by inflating the housing market and stimulating investments then drove up the price of oil causing a "crisis" which set a number of events in motion. i.e. government bailouts of our ,the taxpayers money, while consolidating the banking system. We bought the powerful banks smaller banks for nothing. The seizing of properties as never seen before. This is important as these properties were bought by banks who wrote a piece of paper that has value in theory but in reality has none. They give this property for us to use. Then when we cannot pay they take the property for themselves. Claim misfortune, receive money from the government as compensation and the develop and sell the properties for a fat profit without actually spending a dime. And this is in America! What is happening in other countries is even more astounding.

As we drift into 2010 we need to step back and take a look at what is really happening around us. Forget about your political beliefs, religious views, national agendas and just look around. There are events happening at this moment that will greatly change all of our lives forever. 2010! The future is now and our wildest imaginations are coming true accept that it mostly isn't from military force. It's with our own consent. All of our New Year's Resolutions should be this. "I'm a free individual. My life has meaning. I am important. I am not a slave. I will not lie down and accept this! This is wrong. I know it's wrong! We can feed everyone in the world. We can give clean water to everyone in the world. We can offer a good life to everyone in the world. We can operate without fossil fuels. We can live together in peace."

The only element interfering with this resolution is PROFIT. We are capable of doing everything we "want" to do in the future, now. The only thing interfering is PROFIT. That my friends is the root of all evil. So, this New Year, 2010, I ask that everyone consider the truth of what is happening around the world and speak out about it. It all begins with us. Don't be like the Americans and get distracted by a corporate puppet talking about change. His color is different but his sponsors aren't. Don't be fooled by the tricks of the deceivers.

*Steps off his soapbox and walks away to the music of Public Enemy's "Fight the Power"*

Sorry for the rant but the new year always starts up my activist side. But unlike the 60's generation I hate drugs. I will not be distracted.
warsprite (152 D)

@ C-K My gen did not start the Viet war any more than my parents gen started WW2, even though each fought in their war. Cuba also was not are doing. The drug culture started as a foolish attempt to seek new ways, not just self indulgence. Than you also must consider that Timothy Leary and other counterculture icons where from the earler gen. So no "we did not start the fire". As to your speculation into economic/social theory I do not feel like opening that can of worms now.
C-K (2037 D)

Again I must say that I'm not attacking the generation but the times. To say that the 60's was the greatest generation is absolutely, positively, false. Many people were alive at that time and many people did many things. No one group is responsible but the decade was a terrible one overall for the history of the USA. How could it honestly be considered anything other than a disaster? Give me 3 reasons why the 60's were great and I'll give you 6 reasons why they weren't.
C-K (2037 D)

Actually, the Drug culture was started by the government. The military created LSD originally as a stimulant for soldiers in combat situations. Then, through testing, they realized that the euphoric effects were too great so it was deleted from the possibilities of military use. Then they realized that it would work much better as a tool to distract that idealistic generation whom was trying to interfere with world (bank) progress. Then , with it's success, other drugs followed and continue to follow.

LSD
Meth
Cocaine
Heroine
Crack
Ecstasy

Is it a coincidence that after the USA intrusions into S.A. that there was a significant rise in Cocaine? No!

Is there a coincidence that with the USA intrusion into Afghanistan that there is an increase in Heroine? No!

Expect the new drug to arrive on the market to be Opium. The same drug that was "pushed" by the British in Asia. It is derived from the poppy like Heroine but is "safer" and more exceptable as it's use doesn't involve needles. Just wait all you junkies. Central Asian Heaven is on it's way. The best distraction you can imagine is coming soon to a neighborhood near you!
warsprite (152 D)

@C-K And I'm not defending the times. Like you said there was alot of good also and if any decade that was the worst it would be 30s or the 40s. Also I think what you perceive as greatest gen noise is just bunch of old people reliving their youth. May Venus be with you. :)
C-K (2037 D)
01 Jan 10 UTC
In what way? Do you doubt the existence of an organized effort to consolidate the world economies?
warsprite (152 D)
01 Jan 10 UTC
LSD is not a stimulant it is a hallucinate. Not something you give to your own troops. The goverment expermented with alimited number of people as means for mind control or to disabled enemy troops and failed to work as advertised. Are you saying T. Leary and company were military tools? Your talking about people that are as antimilitary as you can get with along history as such. Finaly most people did not do any more than Pot. The cocaine problem started in the 70s and is what started the increased US involvement in SA. Check your time lines. The poppy has always been a cash crop in that part of the world, and Talibon and company are just taking advantage of that fact to get cash. Not the US goverment.
