Opening in Gunboat as Russia
Russia has the largest array of openings compared to all other countries on the Classic map. So what exactly is the best opening when you can't communicate with your fellow... allies?

The Empire wasn't that bad
*POTENTIAL ROGUE ONE SPOILERS*
I just saw Rogue One and it was awesome. I've been incredibly impressed with the way Disney has brought new life into the franchise. But, that's not what this thread is about...

"It's not the system that's bad, it's the politicians that were in charge and their actions."

the system creates an EASY route for dictators, who have zero oversight. yeah. doesn't sound bad at all. If Yoda were in charge it'd be great until he died and successors came. This is ALWAYS the problem with monarchies. also did i mention zero oversight?

"He's planning to increase the nuclear stockpile since he can't get his own Death Star."

BTW Russia has more warheads than us, and we haven't tested nearly half of ours in decades

"He'll bypass Congress when he can't get his way."

*Obama* cough cough

Tarkin backed up Leia's claims that Alderaan was peaceful by following up her claim with "you would prefer a military target, then name the system". Showing he knew it wasn't a threat.

"I'm sure if Yoda had replaced Palpatine we would have had a different outcome."

I mean maybe Yoda. The system before the Empire was also pretty corrupt, especially the Jedi Order. Some of the highest ranking officers of the Jedi (after pushing themselves as military leaders as ranking officers) tried to assassinate an elected leader because he MIGHT be part of an ancient order that was the rival of theirs. But then that's Mace Windu mostly. Yoda's corruption was more trying to convince Luke to train harder to kill his own father.

Anakin may have been in the right to say the Jedi were evil (he did want to put Palpatine on trial instead of killing him outright), and Order 66 makes sense when you consider they're executing members of an order that had just tried to assassinate the head of state. However, none of that automatically justifies any of the murders committed by the Empire.

guys guys guys. you're all forgetting. everybody who is in the empire, fucking LOVES the empire! the empire cares about itself above everybody else. that means everybody who is a part of the empire gets a nice life. who cares if a few planets disappear. not my problem.

People in an empire love it if the empire makes their lives better. As long as you are safe, who cares about the rest.

Mussolini made the trains run on time was an excuse to have the Fascists run Italy. Christians in Iraq miss the good old days when Saddam protected them from the Muslims. Same in Egypt.

My mother grew up in Hitler's Germany where there were people that were glad he was going to make Germany great again after being crushed by the Allies in WW I.
TrPrado (461 D)
31 Dec 16 UTC
Ahem. Mussolini did NOT make the trains run on time. That's the one thing he was elected for and he failed. That's why his people betrayed him. Yup, the trains. That's it.

empire made the economy explode. how else could they afford a death star?
TrPrado (461 D)

Well they were stealing resources. Rogue One did a really good job of demonstrating the Empire as more evil than other films could. They were shown stealing crystals from a temple to power the Death Star.

just a small city. the empire needed it.
Spending way to much time considering this question, here is my first stab:

#1 It is autocratic – Emperor Palpatine takes over from the senate in a direct power play that alludes to Emperor Augustus taking over the Roman Republic. Many autocratic states have been in existence without being evil themselves. This only sets up that the Emperor has unrestricted power. Whether he uses it for good or evil is his, and only his, choice.

#2 it is militaristic - Emperor Augustus is purported with having said “I found Rome a city of bricks and left it a city of marble.” He used his power to improve the city (at least aesthetically) and put Romans on the bread doles to work in public works. Emperor Palpatine can really only be shown to have organized an overpowering military for a government that did not need a galactic military. He is reminiscent of Hitler in that he puts the populace to work building a strong military that he uses to control the populace. The only people who oppose the Empire are citizens of the Empire. Mostly everyone else keeps their heads down and tries to avoid any contact with the Empire.

#3 it is racist – In contrast to the Galactic Empire which was shown to be richly diverse. The Galactic Empire, to borrow from Star Trek, is a “homo-sapiens only club” in the movies. Sure, Luke is considering joining the Academy; he fits into their uniform. On board the death star, star destroyers, and TIE fighters and shuttles, you’ll find only humans and mechanical slaves. Bespin, Tatooine, Yavin, the Jedi Council, etc. are all culturally and racially diverse. For the Empire, anyone outside the club deserves no rights, as can be seen in the “rebel scum” and “Where are you taking this THING?” comments. The only role that nonhumans have in the Empire are as collaborators, spies, and bounty hunters.
**#3 in contrast to the Galactic Republic which was diverse

Come on, if we're going to use analogies, we've gotta go all the way to Godwin's Law. Lucas intentionally put in Nazi symbolism. Which basically makes the Galactic Republic a symbol of the Weimar Republic.

If we count the expanded universe, there is always the theory that Palpatine seized power to stop the Yuuzhan Vong invasion which was on its way. The theory makes a lot of sense, as it would be illogical to build up such a massive military, including a weapon for destroying planets, if the only enemy was a bunch of rebels. On the other hand, the Yuuzhan Vong used planet-sized ships, which would be perfect targets for the death star.

"If we count the expanded universe"

If you count the expanded universe then you go look at the Darth Bane books and the Darth Plagueis books which explain in detail that the plan to take over wasn't Palpatine's, but his masters whom he brutally murdered on the day he won the Chancellorship in order to take all the power for himself out of greed.

Nice try though.
#4 it is indiscriminately murderous on a huge scale – Killing an entire planet for no better reason than their government may have sided with the rebels. Grand Moff Tarkin states the purpose of the Death Star, and as the its Commanding Officer he should know at least some of the purpose behind it. “Fear will keep the outer systems in line. Fear of this battle station.” It is a weapon of terror and is used as such. He makes an example of Alderaan to terrify all of the other planets under Imperial dominion. Grand Moff Tarkin murders a planet. This murderous behavior on the part of Palpatine’s henchmen starts earlier. Anakin murders the sand people “not only the men, but the women and the children.” As Vader, he goes on to murder the younglings at the Jedi Council and then his allies (Palpatine’s pawns) the trade federation and others before his showdown with Obi-Wan. The Empire uses murder to enforce the will of the Emperor and if you are a completely peaceful and loyal citizen you can still be whipped out on a whim.

yeah but who cares about all those people?
Presumably the Rebellion's propaganda machine.

Mods Ignoring Complaints?
I filed multiple complaints against abusive forum content days ago, and the mods have not responded. Very disappointed -- I'm fairly certain I am being ignore/treated unfairly because they dislike me -- I expect better behavior from the mods here.

Anyone else being ignored by mods?

There are eight games on this page. When I click the arrow to go to the next page, it says 2 of -7, but there are no games on this page, or on any of the other pages. Shouldn't there be 66 joinable games?

Electoral College Update
Some of the people here who supported the electoral college suggested keeping the allotted electoral votes per state but awarding them proportionally per state as opposed to WTA. Since the results are basically all in I thought I'd do the math. Here it is:
Clinton: 256, Trump: 250

Asia Pacific
I thought it would be interesting to start a thread on the current issue and affairs happening in the Asia Pacific. I would benefit from this and I'd like to hear what people have to say in an ethical point of view that I wouldn't be able to see myself without guidance. Feel free to post articles and arguments involving the Asia Pacific, which would of course include countries like South Korea, China, and Japan, rather than India and Russia.
