Help! I'm new!
Hi everyone, I just joined this site a couple days ago. I understand relatively how to play Diplomacy, but I've only played in real life before. Typically, I've never been able to round up many friends to play the game because it takes so long, but I've played some games. Can anyone direct me to any resources so I can learn to play better? Sorry if there was a post like this, but I couldn't find it.

MLB Playoffs
Well fellas, we're down to the last day. The Mariners' drought continues, the Cards continue to somehow stay in it, the Jays thank the Lord finally get a win to push them to the #1 spot. The Nats also clinched home field advantage over the Dodgers.

Any WS predictions? Is it really the Cubs' year? Can the Dodgers finally make it? Who's going to surprise? My money is on the Jays duelling it out with the Giants, but of course I have a strong bias. What do you all think?

I teared up a little when I realized that Italy was going to give his partner, Austria, a piece of the pie instead of soloing. There are happy endings in Diplomacy after all!

webDiplomacy continues to lose players
The number of players listed each month in the Ghostratings continues to decline. Every year, there is a peak around May/June. We peaked in 2011 with 3,571 players, and steadily lost players from then to now (if you don't count the 2013-2014 inflated numbers anomaly). This last May peak we hit 2,503. At this rate, I figure there will be seven of us left in 2029.

Frostweaver's Personal Comments on Live Gunboat-483
Just a note: I'm not playing in the game, just spectating and inputting my personal comments on the game's moves.

Classic opening moves were made by all countries - except for Turkey. Seems Turkey is susceptible to Russian retaliation from the Black Sea. Also quite interesting how Britain and France strayed away from the English Channel.

That was a hell of a good fight! Also, excellent commentary. I'm a big fan of that Diplomacy Archive site as well. History Gamer Dot Com's channel on YouTube was my second great resource when picking up the game. And following the round-by-round coverage of the World Diplomacy Championship on YouTube has also been a great insight on how to play the game.

This looked fun. I do think what you should do especially if you make this weekly or bi-weekly is to have a sign-up thread and pit 7 players who volunteer against each other while doing the commentary. Occasionally get a guest commentator and go to town. Most of the people here have no lives and would gladly sit through years of discussion with no real world tangible value.

Or some kind of "tape delay". Like posting your Spring 1901 thoughts only when the game has reached Spring 1905 or something.
Red-Lion (382 D)

That's probably still against site policy though?

I would certainly volunteer to be commentated/analyzed. This was super fun to read (although he was clearly on my side). I think it'd be awesome.
Kakarroto (128 D)

well, if we make it unranked and with password it should work without braking any rules? Could be hell of a lot of fun :)

question is, are there enough to do this just for the fun of it without getting any points? Maybe once a month or so as a monthly event?

You guys should check out the School of War series that is run every so often. They pair you up with an experienced player to TA you during a game. People also provide commentary on the games in the forum. It's a really goos series. One just finished so another one could be run probably after the World Cup ends or whenever the professors have the time. If they could chime in they could provide more info. And on a side note, I haven't forgot about my EOG. I am planning on writing it up when I get time!

I'll tell you what is hilarious. Play a Warlight 6 player free for all, make several alliances, and break them all. They NEVER see it coming, and then get ridiculously offended and spend the rest of the game telling you what a bastard you are.

Some of the more uppity ones continue telling you what a bastard you are long after :p. It's great fun :).

The general rule is not to comment on gunboats, as they are fully anonymous and do not allow in game communication, so commentary would create communication in an otherwise anonymous and non-communicative environment.

Games where everyone signs up agreeing to be commented on are great! We've run some games in the past called "peanut galleries" which are essentially that. Unranked and private is a good way to go when setting these up. I'm sure if you create a new thread advertising such a game, you'll get some willing players and commentators.

Yes, thank you all for the comments. I'll certainly check out the YouTube videos you guys all mentioned.

@Octavious You play Warlight? We should play sometime. I've got a few tricks up my sleeve. ;)

Frost weaver I want you in a dip match.
Octavious (2701 D)

@ Frostweaver

You mean something other than the usual Warlight trick of creating a game with such an obscure set of rules that no-one else has a chance of winning?

I've not really played since they changed the default 1v1 to remove the luck element of battles. Who wants to play Risk without the dice? I might pop over and look you up for a FFA game one day :).

Oh, whilst you're here you may want to drop your "never stab" attitude. It's very much against the spirit of the game, not only preventing you from winning but also making the experience far poorer for everyone else. In diplomacy it's very much the dick move.
Frostweaver (80 DX)
25 Oct 16 UTC
@CommanderByron Sure, but it'll have to be long term.

@Octavious Yes, I'm very skilled at the 1 vs 1 games, otherwise I wouldn't be level 53 on Warlight. Winning FFA games also contribute to my high level - especially playing with much more people, like close to 30.

I won't drop it yet and that's my philosophy. Usually, we won't know who each other are in the games but I still won't stab. It's just not the right policy. If I win or draw without stabbing, all the more better. If I lose, it's alright.
Octavious (2701 D)
25 Oct 16 UTC
That's not strictly true. Levels are more of a long service award than a measure of skill :p. How do you find other players on Warlight? Do you go by the same name?
Frostweaver (80 DX)
25 Oct 16 UTC
Concerning the levels, that is true but it still takes skill to get there. If you lose most games, you would not be at a high level. It also gets exponentially harder to level up once you're past level 50. About finding players, you just look them up in the search? I'll change my name to Frostweaver in Warlight, right now it's not searchable because it's the Greek form of Athena, but Google Translate can't get you there. I'm also not in a clan there so you won't be able to look me up until I change my name. I'll change it tonight.

@Octavious You can find me now on Warlight by the name: Frostweaver. I look forward to playing you :D

Facebook Diplomacy
I've discovered a bot that allows you to play chess on a Facebook Chat page using algebraic notation. Could someone conceivably create a Diplomacy adjudicator for a Facebook chat page? It might make Diplomacy more accessible as you can easily play with your friends without worrying for phase length, pauses etc. Would this be in any way possible? It's just a thought.
