@the forum at large:
my thoughts on CDs and how to handle them based on who is CDing:
IF I AM CDing: it's a life emergency that far outweighs a game. If it's just a temporary thing, then I'll pause the game or find a sub. I have two CDs from such emergencies.
IF SOMEONE ELSE CDs AND...
--im going to benefit: I take the solo if I can. NMR's and CD's happen. You gotta take a solo any way you can get it. I treat every game like it's part of a tournament. I don't play this game to feel good. I play to win. If I played this game to feel good, then I would quit every time I got stabbed. There's no dishonor in soling when an opportunity presents itself. It's Diplomacy. We lie, cheat and steal in this game and THAT is no less dishonoring than soloing when a CD occurs. Each person sets their standards at different levels. Some have no problem doing far less "moral" things. For example: if you give me your password and we ever play in a game together, I have no problem logging into your username and reading your press. Some may not go that far, but it's no different than listening into someone else's conversation.
--if someone else will benefit and possibly solo: then I call for a draw. I DO NOT CANCEL. I want the CD to be a permanent part of someone's record. I draw because I will probably lose otherwise. If the person that benefits the most won't draw, then I pitch a fit, I band with the rest of the board, I fight back, I whine, kick, scream and bemoan the unfairness of the situation. I DO NOT QUIT. I use whatever means I have available to tip the game in my favor.
