Would anyone be interested joining an in-progress Modern Diplomacy game? We are currently in 1998, in what was a high-quality game until Egypt suddenly disappeared.

Who would play a live game tonight?
I've come to realize that I don't have the patience for non-live games much. I need a minimum of 2 days/phase to have the free time to conduct diplomacy appropriately well, and that ends up being too long a game for me to maintain interest. However a live game (being no more than a 3-4 hr chunk of time) is pretty manageable. So I wanna play one.

Who's in?

I'm a Godfather!
I just became a Godfather and I'm wicked excited! With Christmas and his baptism coming up, I want to start thinking about things to do now and in the future. Obviously, it will largely depend on what the parents want, but I was hoping some people could share their thoughts on being a Godparent.
Thanks!

The Greatest People in History Tournament--Nominations
We've done Literature, we've done Music...so, since we're a history-happy lot, why not tackle the (impossible but fun) task of asking "Who was the better general, Alexander or Genghis Khan?" (Though bobgenghiskhan is clearly the answer.) 4 categories: Military/Political Leaders, Artists, Inventors/Scientists, and a "Grab-Bag" category, for all the folks who don't fit in elsewhere. Nominate 1 for each category, and we'll start when we have 64 (or 128, either way.)

I don't know if the other tournaments had a listing of the contenders prior to them being finalized. It might be nice to see the preliminary list just so people can make any other last minute nominations. It's easier to see who is missing when the list is aggregated alphabetically.

I'll also advocate that the tournament organizer decide themselves on the top half and bottom half seedings for each of the 4 categories and then do random pairings of 1 top vs 1 bottom.

@KC, You need to check other people's nominations. You have a few duplicates.

@Yoyo, how does Constantine not fit into the first category?

Leader: William Henry Harrison
Artist: John Cage
Scientist: Deepak Chopra
Wildcard: Charlie Day http://i.imgur.com/CWSdN1C.gif
Hmm...This list is lacking some estrogen.
Suggestions (I have used my votes): Joan of Arc,Princess Olga of Kiev, Cleopatra (maybe)...
Yoyoyozo (65 D)

I guess. I don't think he was a particularly great leader but his actions were definitely one of the most influential in history. But if it bothers you... Pythagoras?

My actual list:

Leader: Deng Xiaoping
Artist: Homer
Scientist: Alan Turing
Wild Card: Bill Gates
@Vashta - I considered female rulers, but besides Catherine the Great of Russia, few have done much to merit a place here. Joan of Arc rallied the French to win the battle of Orleans. Beyond that though? Not much. You could throw in literally thousands of male fighters who had the same effect in history.
Marie Curie on the other hand, legitimate contender

So far (watch it be outdated by the time I post, lol):

Leaders:
Franklin Delano Roosevelt (I may change this to Elizabeth if all the rest are dudes)
Adolf Hitler (interesting first two choices, lol!)
Gandhi
Hannibal
Theodore Roosevelt
Augustus Caesar
Tamerlane
Tokugawa
Cincinnatus
Erwin Rommel
Genghis Khan
Napoleon Bonaparte
Alfred the Great

Artists: (by which I mean any and all artists, film, lit, music, painting, etc.)
William Shakespeare
The Beatles
J.R.R. Tolkien
Arnold Schoenberg
Vincent Van Gogh
Pablo Picasso
Henry David Thoreau (yeah, I think he's better here than Kant, bo_sox)
Claude Monet
Leonardo da Vinci
Lao Tzu
Pyotor Tchaikovsky
Vergil (here comes Team Vergil! lol)
Lord Byron
Fyodor Dostoyevsky
Michaelangelo
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (I APPROVE SO MUCH :D )

Scientists/Inventors:
Albert Einstein
Thomas Edison
Neil deGrasse Tyson
Jonas Salk
Robert Oppenheimer
Nikola Tesla
Werner von Braun
Mendeleev
Archimedes
James Joule
Aristotle
Isaac Newton

Wild Card: (the ones that aren't people's moms, footballers, octopi) ;)
Plato
Immanuel Kant
Rene Descartes
Benjamin Franklin
Gichin Funakoshi
Khalid ibn al-Walid
Martin Luther
John Locke

Benjamin L. Salomon...a dentist? Unless I don't know something about him besides that, is that really a world figure?

And before I include him, quick poll--should Jesus count or not (not for the religious aspect, but for the did-he-exist aspect.)

Yes jesus did exist as a person. There are records proving this.

Artist: Stradivarius
Scientist: Carl Bosch

@ghug ... Like you said, we have thousands of years of scientists. At this point, one of the most important scientific contributions one could make would be to popularize and publicize science while deflating religious mythology as popular belief. That's exactly what pop culture scientists are doing.

He's not the greatest scientist ever. He would never beat Salk or Newton or Einstein or someone of that degree. I just think he's doing something extremely important.

@Obi ... include Jesus, he existed. Whether or not he was a prophet and son of God and all that jazz is up to you (based exclusively on your religion, I assume we're on the same side there).

Also, if you would, could you replace Kant with John Muir? Surely someone else will recommend Kant down the road but I feel like Muir could be left out.

Also a shout out to George Washington Carver
Hey. Salomon wasn't just a dentist. He was a jewish dentist in World War II who successfully held off 100 Japanese soldiers having suffered 75 knife wounds. But, if you insist, I'll give up him and nominate Princess Olga of Kiev.

Cleopatra and Elizabeth I need to be in here...I've said I'll change FDR to Lizzie if I must, but hopefully I won't have to (at least those two female rulers should be in, if not more...Victoria would have a claim as well, being the longest-reining female ruler in the West and atop the mighty British Empire.)

And no one's said Alexander the Great yet...

Also, Martin Luther King, as another Wild Card idea for somebody

Not classic Diplomacy
So I'm new, and just finding my way here. But I've been playing Diplomacy for almost 40 years (anyone else here?)! the interesting thing about the greatest game ever invented by a mailman, is that the main object isn't really stabbing someone, but learning to work together. and being trustworthy. Unfortunately, that's not a version this site espouses! Too bad, but i find the site enjoyable anyway.
