As a participant in a previous School of War (beginner), I am looking forward to participating in this upcoming SoW. For those that are wondering, it's an excellent learning opportunity. There is, or should be, continual dialogue with a participant's Teaching Assistant. Following each turn there is professor commentary...some universal, some contrary, but the rationale for the thinking is spelled out.

That game, even though I had my ass handed to me, did teach me a good deal more than if I hadn't participated. I kept an on-going copy of feedback and comments from my TA and the professors because there was a tremendous amount of instruction that was handed out.

With that many people interested in being TA's, what would you think about me joining ckroberts and peterwiggin as a full-time prof? It's a little less time consuming (I'm working on PhD applications this spring) and I thought during the last game that doing video commentary for an SoW would be fun.

Thoughts?
Triumvir (1193 D)
07 Jan 14 UTC
I'd still be interested and willing to act as TD.
2ndWhiteLine (2601 D(B))

When we have that many TAs, we usually go with the top 7 just because they usually have the most experience.
mendax (321 D)
07 Jan 14 UTC
I think this is the point where everyone realises that I'm only any good with one or two countries, given my truly shoddy GR.
Triumvir (1193 D)
07 Jan 14 UTC
As long as Italy is one of those countries, you're indispensable. :)
mendax (321 D)
07 Jan 14 UTC
Italy and England, I can play well. France and Turkey I'm ok with, but I'd probably be worse than the students if you gave me Germany or Austria. It's almost as if I like countries tending towards long-term strategical goals...
A_Tin_Can (2234 D)
07 Jan 14 UTC
I thoroughly recommend Mendax as a TA, he gives excellent advice and insight.

If there are too many TAs, I would be happy to step down in favour of someone more experienced.
Andrew Wiggin (157 D)
07 Jan 14 UTC
I would love to be a student. I've been waiting for this opportunity since the last one. There is so much to know about this game and something like this would be helpful.
thehamster (3263 D)

Hey Triumvir, lets get Andrew to the top of the list. He messaged me about the SoW a few months back

I see TA Get chosen by highest GR. How do participants usually get chosen? Also if there are many requests to joint what about two SoW games?
Ogion (3882 D)

Wow. This sounds like a lot of fun.

I played a fair bit of this back in the day and even had a hand made World Diplomacy board (33 countries, each with unique painted wood pieces) drawn on a refrigerator box!

I am super rusty and was never that good to begin with. I'd love to get advice!
2ndWhiteLine (2601 D(B))
08 Jan 14 UTC
This is generating a lot of interest, which is awesome. I'd love to get a second board going, but that would require more TAs or some TAs to pull double duty, not to mention more Professors or more time dedicated to writeups.
thehamster (3263 D)
08 Jan 14 UTC
Hey Shield
Youd probably make a great TA. Hopefully in the spring game? I think last summer they tried doing 2 SoW games at once and it was a mess.

Ogion
Wow, thats a true Diplomat! I think we're more than filled up for the current game, but Ill encourage you to play some games on this site over the next few months, and I promise to invite you to the Spring School of War game (late March).
thehamster (3263 D)

Sorry for slightly contradicting 2WL, we both typed at the same time.
2ndWhiteLine (2601 D(B))
08 Jan 14 UTC
We're on the same page, hamster. One game is a big enough commitment. I'm sure we'll get plenty of interest for a spring game.
Ogion (3882 D)

Cool. I'll look forward to it and follow the discussion. That'll be a thread in forum, right?

Since I've seen my name up there,I will assume I'm in. Will someone reach out in a private text or email to tell everyone where to go and who they will be working with or will it be done through this thread??

Everyone will get a pm, but there will be a main thread as well.

An update (with tentative TA assignments). Let me know if the nation assigned to you would work.

Professors:
ckroberts (29)
peterwiggin (7)
JMo (temp) (5)
2WL (temp) (197)

Teaching Assistants:
thehamster (22) - Turkey
mendax (2255) - Italy
Stackelberg (74) - Germany
Goldfinger0303 (100) - Russia
ccga (149) - France
Basvanopheusden (85) - England
murraysheroes (130) - Austria

Possible Students (pending finalization):
Andrew Wiggin (706)
Hamilton Brian (640)
LordDavion (nr)
Vallk (682)
Meowdolf? (awaiting confirmation) (4050)
Battalion? (awaiting confirmation) (1721)
kasimax (940)
frenchie29 (984)
virtuslex (505)
ssorenn (700)
nesdunk14 (3232)
A_Tin_Can (500)

Since there are enough TA's for me to step out, and since we're getting so much interest, I could run a second, smaller game (something like a SoW Study Group) where the players wouldn't have TA's but there would be prof commentary (from myself and perhaps either JMo or 2WL if one of you is interested) on a separate forum page.

@A_Tin_Can - I put you back on the student list because I assume you'd be interested in the 2nd game. Let me know if I'm wrong.
dyager_nh (619 D)
08 Jan 14 UTC
Fot the sidegame game, if you didnt want to confuse the forums, a professor commentary could be placed in the General Comments of the game provided the Professor had Mod access.

I am available as needed for either game. I spoke to Hampster to use me as a backup if a ta or player goes on hiatus.
thehamster (3263 D)
08 Jan 14 UTC
I haven't forgotten, Dyager. You and achilles are on my 'reserve TA' list ;)
A_Tin_Can (2234 D)
08 Jan 14 UTC
Thanks Triumvir! I'd definitely be interested in playing in the SoW study group game :)
Vallk (904 D)
08 Jan 14 UTC
Glad I'm I seem to be pretty high up on that list. I've been following Winter '13 closely since my joining the site, and have been waiting for a chance to try to join.
thehamster (3263 D)
08 Jan 14 UTC
Hey Valik,
That's not exactly the list, but you're definitely in. Any preference as to who or which country you'd like to work with? Ccga/France is spoken for.
murraysheroes (526 D(B))
08 Jan 14 UTC
I've drawn Austria an unusual number of times here recently and fared fairly well (no defeats, at least). Austria will do fine.

I had the retreats phase open for a game, and was clicking through the years, and when I fast-forwarded back to present I saw the retreat order because the retreat had been processed right then. It was humorous to see a page with !! for a retreat order under a map with the order shown.

Atheists in the east
How many are there? Relatively more or less than here? Although all the east is fine, I'm especially talking about the countries that are considered to be either hinduistic (not sure if that's how you spell it in English) or buddhistic (again not sure). Think India and the like. Not quite the Middle-East.

Email Hasbro! Let's get Diplomacy for Wii U
I don't want to engage in any arguments about consoles, but I have a Wii U and Diplomacy would be absolutely perfect for the system, for both face to face and online games. I have gone to Hasbro's website and emailed them a request to look into developing a Diplomacy game for the Wii U. It won't take but 10 minutes to do, so let's see if we could make some headway.
