Scottish MP on trial for lying
Here's a fascinating case. A Member of Parliament actually being taken to court for lying - and in his defence, admitting that he lied, but arguing that's just something politicians do, so he shouldn't be held to account for it.

Facts based discussion on climate change
Nobody denies that the earth changes. Mountains form with shifting plate tectonics. We had an Ice Age, and then the Ice Age went away. All without man on the earth. Yes, climate changes. Let’s have a facts based discussion on climate change.

So, what is a troll on the Dip site?

well, for example, someone who repeatedly demands facts yet fails to produce any and if he/she does, they are wrong. also, someone who thinks the burden of proof for a field that basically every scientist agrees on lies on the side of those supporting the idea. 1. We don't 'vote' on science.
2. There is no evidence of man-made climate change. Yes, climate changes. We know that it gets hot and gets cold. If you want to suggest man is causing this change, you have to show the facts. Man caused climate change exists only in computer models, and the minds of believers. And ALL of the models are wrong. Those are the facts you continue to deny

Does CO2 always correlate with temperature (and if not, why not?)

Link to this page
What the science says...
Select a level... Basic Intermediate
Surface temperature measurements are affected by short-term climate variability, and recent warming of deep oceans

Climate Myth...
There's no correlation between CO2 and temperature
"Twentieth century global warming did not start until 1910. By that time CO2 emissions had already risen from the expanded use of coal that had powered the industrial revolution, and emissions only increased slowly from 3.5gigatonnes in 1910 to under 4gigatonnes by the end of the Second World War.

It was the post war industrialization that caused the rapid rise in global CO2 emissions, but by 1945 when this began, the Earth was already in a cooling phase that started around 1942 and continued until 1975. With 32 years of rapidly increasing global temperatures and only a minor increase in global CO2 emissions, followed by 33 years of slowly cooling global temperatures with rapid increases in global CO2 emissions, it was deceitful for the IPCC to make any claim that CO2 emissions were primarily responsible for observed 20th century global warming." (Norm Kalmanovitch).
Why doesn’t the temperature rise at the same rate that CO2 increases?

The amount of CO2 is increasing all the time - we just passed a landmark 400 parts per million concentration of atmospheric CO2, up from around 280ppm before the industrial revolution. That’s a 42.8% increase.

A tiny amount of CO2 and other greenhouse gases, like methane and water vapour, keep the Earth’s surface 30°Celsius (54°F) warmer than it would be without them. We have added 42% more CO2 but that doesn't mean the temperature will go up by 42% too.

There are several reasons why. Doubling the amount of CO2 does not double the greenhouse effect. The way the climate reacts is also complex, and it is difficult to separate the effects of natural changes from man-made ones over short periods of time.

As the amount of man-made CO2 goes up, temperatures do not rise at the same rate. In fact, although estimates vary - climate sensitivity is a hot topic in climate science, if you’ll forgive the pun - the last IPCC report (AR4) described the likely range as between 2 and 4.5 degrees C, for double the amount of CO2 compared to pre-industrial levels.

So far, the average global temperature has gone up by about 0.8 degrees C (1.4 F).

"According to an ongoing temperature analysis conducted by scientists at NASA’s Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS)…the average global temperature on Earth has increased by about 0.8°Celsius (1.4°Fahrenheit) since 1880. Two-thirds of the warming has occurred since 1975, at a rate of roughly 0.15-0.20°C per decade."

Source: NASA Earth Observatory

The speed of the increase is worth noting too. Unfortunately, as this quote from NASA demonstrates, anthropogenic climate change is happening very quickly compared to changes that occurred in the past (text emboldened for emphasis):

"As the Earth moved out of ice ages over the past million years, the global temperature rose a total of 4 to 7 degrees Celsius over about 5,000 years. In the past century alone, the temperature has climbed 0.7 degrees Celsius, roughly ten times faster than the average rate of ice-age-recovery warming."
Crap... I didn't think I copied that much... I just wanted the quote at the bottom.

nobody suggests that. if 99% of scientists agree, that isn't voting.

Yes I too am in sympathy with this comment jamiet. It is a little of an over-simplification, but I have heard it said that science can say little, if anything, about the truth or otherwise of mathematics or come to that philosophy and yet it fundamentally relies on both.

that looks beautiful :)
There are some things I have learned in my life. One of them is if the other guy lies he is most likely wrong but, does not care. That if someone tries to silence the debate (I don't want to hear it) they know they are wrong but, don't care. That if the make outlandish claims they are wrong but, do not care. The statement "99% of scientists" believe in man made climate change is grossly untrue. Has there ever been a survey of 100% of scientists on climate change? No there has not, to help you with the answer. Is a scientist in the engineering field studying climate change? How about a physicist or someone working on or the science of Artificial Intelligence? Would those scientists have informed opinions on climate change? The answer is no. The 3 scientists that I know whose science is engineering, physics and artificial intelligence say they "only know what they read in the paper." They spend their serious time studying their specific sciences. So no, it is not true that 99% of scientists believe in man made climate change. The truth is that of those few people who have studied climate change a majority believe there is man made climate change. But, that doesn't sound good enough so you need the 99% lie. That taints the rest of the argument. There have been more than a few lies by the climate change community. Why the need to place hundreds of temperature probes in specific locations where they would generate higher than actual temperatures! Why lie if you are right?

BaldOldGuy (74 DX)

I keep saying show the math. Correlation does not prove causation, but if there is no correlation, causality must be ruled out.

The Believers say that increased CO2 will lead to higher temperatures. The Believers need to show this happens. Unfortunately, throughout the history of the earth, this correlation cannot be shown. There is no empirical evidence available to demonstrate or prove the relationship between CO2 and temperature, despite the expenditure of $ billions directed to this end.

The killer proof that CO2 does not drive climate can be found during the Ordovician Silurian and the Jurassic Cretaceous periods, when CO2 levels were greater than 4000 ppm and about 2000 ppm. This is 50 to 100 times what it is today. If the CO2 theory is correct there should have been runaway greenhouse induced global warming during these time periods, but instead there was glaciation.

To repeat, there is no correlation between levels of CO2 in the atmosphere and global temperature, in the short, medium or long term historic time scales. This relationship exists only in the climate change models, or when The Believers fabricate or alter data to fit their models.

These are the facts. Facts are stubborn things.

Jamie ""All math is based on axioms, which are just ideas. And the only requirement is that it works; math is a tool. A mental construct for doing useful things. It has no basis in fact!" -orathaic

What do you say to THAT, old man?"

Ideas are only useful if they work. The idea of man-caused Global Warming is not a particularly good idea, because it simply does not work in reality.
Jamiet99uk (808 D)
08 Nov 15 UTC
@ BOG: It has also been show that solar output (i.e. the amount of heat from the sun) was 5% lower during the Ordovician. This is what caused glaciation. Newer studies have also found that the CO2 levels during that period had previously been over-stated and were actually in the 1000 to 2000ppm range.
Jamiet99uk (808 D)
08 Nov 15 UTC
Now, I have a question for BOG. An honest, serious question:

You say you're deeply religious, yes? That being the case, do you believe that what happens in the world is all part of God's plan?

(This is relevant to climate change, bear with me)
BaldOldGuy (74 DX)
08 Nov 15 UTC
Jamie - "Newer studies have also found that the CO2 levels during that period had previously been over-stated and were actually in the 1000 to 2000ppm range." Still 5 times what it is today.

I know how we can measure CO2 output from Ice core samples. (The Vostok Ice core samples actually show CO2 follows temperature by about 800 years?)

But how do you measure the solar output from a half million years ago? How do you track sunspots?

But you are proving the point. Climate change comes from the sun, not CO2.
