Scottish MP on trial for lying
Here's a fascinating case. A Member of Parliament actually being taken to court for lying - and in his defence, admitting that he lied, but arguing that's just something politicians do, so he shouldn't be held to account for it.

Facts based discussion on climate change
Nobody denies that the earth changes. Mountains form with shifting plate tectonics. We had an Ice Age, and then the Ice Age went away. All without man on the earth. Yes, climate changes. Let’s have a facts based discussion on climate change.

Letho "BOG, so far I haven't seen you provide data or support for a single claim you've posted."

Lets review a few things. One of the 'facts' I posted is that we have empirical evidence that climate changes. We had an ice age, the ice age went away. All without man's intervention. This is called a 'fact' and I posted it repeatedly. Many here are tired of this fact, because it conflicts with their religious belief in man caused climate change.

So the fact is that climate changes. Climate has always changed. Again, this is called a fact. Man caused climate change exists only in computer models, and in the minds of believers. It does not exist in reality. The climate change zealots were 'surprised' by the amount of Antarctic ice that 'unpredictably' appeared It is really up to you to prove man can change the climate, as professed by the models that defy reality.

Now, man can cause disruptions to climate. We could actually cool the earth by setting off a series of nuclear explosions that would throw particulate matter into the atmosphere, and reflect light. Similar to the effect of volcanoes. But this is a temporary effect. We could perhaps warm the earth with a series of reflective mirrors in orbit to capture more solar energy, but I haven't done the math.

But here is the point - I cannot prove a negative. Prove the positive - that man changes the climate.
BaldOldGuy (74 DX)

Kas " you agree that ghg reflect heat, yet you don't think that more ghgs would lead to a temperature increase?" The answer is, it depends. The earth has gone through periods of climate change. ghg reflect heat, and retain heat. But the earth is not static. As more CO2 is produced, lots of things happens. More plants grow. More algae grows in the oceans. CO2 goes up and down. This is a little like static thinking around taxes - Every time taxes were cut - by JFK, by Reagan, by Clinton, by Bush - tax revenues INCREASE. The earth is not static. It adjusts.

"Unfortunately, too many religious zealots here claim that every molecule of CO2 a human exhales will lead to catastrophic global calamity." This was hyperbole and intended for a little comic relief.
TrPrado (461 D)
05 Nov 15 UTC
"As more CO2 is produced, lots of things happens. More plants grow." That should very much be the case in a natural setting. The problem with you consistently relying on that idea is that there is deforestation and soil pollution at the hands of humans, so this is not what is actually going on.
BaldOldGuy (74 DX)
05 Nov 15 UTC
TrP " there is deforestation and soil pollution at the hands of humans" That is true. Communism causes more pollution than any other force on earth. It was just released yesterday that communist China has 'hidden' more CO2 than all that Germany produces. Communist China is a major force in deforestation in South America.

It doesn't, actually. Unless you know of anyone, anywhere, whose climate model attributes *all* changes in the climate to human activity, you're just repeating an irrelevant inanity.

"Man caused climate change exists only in computer models, and in the minds of believers. It does not exist in reality."

This is a claim that you have yet to support with any data whatsoever. (Another one is the claim that the planets' temperatures are shifting in exact correspondence, as I have previously noted.)

"I cannot prove a negative."

No one is asking you to. Provide *evidence* for the negative, as you yourself have requested that everyone in the thread do for their positions, as I have done for my own claims. And provide evidence for the positive claims that you have made, as well.
TrPrado (461 D)
05 Nov 15 UTC
"It was just released yesterday that communist China has 'hidden' more CO2 than all that Germany produces." It's not like it's any major secret that China is bad about this. China, the US, and India all are. When international forces try to have conferences about these sorts of things, those 3 countries get upset because we emit CO2 as a major facet of our economies. Each of those 3 countries have considerably well over twice as many emissions as Germany. Now, if you would kindly avoid trying to steer this conversation onto something else, that'd be nice.
BaldOldGuy (74 DX)
05 Nov 15 UTC
Kas -"wait, so suddenly you're claiming that pollution and deforestation is a problem? or is it only a problem when china does it?" Of course pollution is a problem. We just didn't discuss it.

Deforestation is another question. American lumber companies tend to plant two new trees for everyone cut. Removing forests to grow crops to feed people is not a bad thing. Do you want to bulldoze Berlin to plant a forest? Not as easy an answer.

But CO2 is not pollution. You exhale CO2. Without CO2, you would be dead. Plants use CO2 to create oxygen, which is necessary for human life.

so it wouldn't be a problem if the atmosphere was 30% co2?
BaldOldGuy (74 DX)
05 Nov 15 UTC
Kas "so it wouldn't be a problem if the atmosphere was 30% co2?" The same problem if water were 20 feet deep across the globe. We can argue hypotheticals all day.
BaldOldGuy (74 DX)
05 Nov 15 UTC
But the question remains, show how man-made CO2 results in climate change.
kasimax (243 D)
05 Nov 15 UTC
bare with me. that means that if there's too much co2 in the atmosphere, that is a problem? will you finally admit that?
BaldOldGuy (74 DX)
05 Nov 15 UTC
kas - "bare with me. that means that if there's too much co2 in the atmosphere, that is a problem? will you finally admit that?"

I never denied that too much CO2 is a problem. But man made CO2 is about .23 % of CO2 in the atmosphere. CO2 in the atmosphere is not static. My question all along has been how does the minuscule amount of man-made CO2 can change the climate? There is no empirical evidence of global warming. Ice in the Antarctic is increasing.

BaldOldGuy (74 DX)
05 Nov 15 UTC
Kas - I read it.

Human CO2 is a tiny % of CO2 emissions
This is true.

“Human CO2 emissions upset the natural balance of the carbon cycle. Man-made CO2 in the atmosphere has increased by a third since the pre-industrial era, creating an artificial forcing of global temperatures which is warming the planet. While fossil-fuel derived CO2is a very small component of the global carbon cycle, the extra CO2 is cumulative because the natural carbon exchange cannot absorb all the additional CO2.”
This is uncertain. More CO2 results in more plants, which consume CO2.
Lethologica (203 D)
05 Nov 15 UTC
"But man made CO2 is about .23 % of CO2 in the atmosphere."

Bizarre claim. Current atmospheric CO2 mass is just shy of 3000 gigatonnes (400 ppm). This is up about 700 gigatonnes from the '70s (320 ppm). Humans have emitted about 900 gigatonnes of CO2 in that time. If human CO2 production leads to an imbalance in CO2 emission/absorption, does it matter which exact CO2 molecules remain in the atmosphere? What does it even mean to give man-made CO2 as a percentage of atmospheric CO2? And where does the .23% number come from?
BaldOldGuy (74 DX)

TrP "You tried to go off topic with a bash on Communism, actually."
Is there a bigger polluter in the world than Communist China?

"More CO2 results in more plants, which consume CO2."

Which has slowed, but not stopped, the increase in atmospheric CO2 over recent decades.

"Is there a bigger polluter in the world than Communist China?"

The relevant descriptor is not "communist," but "industrializing." Keep banging that political drum, though!

Biggest cause for concern I have in year 2 of this so called "system" is that for the first 4 weeks of these people sitting down to rank everyone they come up with even worse logic than the coaches and AP polls.
I realize you cant get everything right all the time, but this years first ranking feels more like a house of cards just begging to be knocked down.
