What opposing power do you most want to see in able hands?
Which country in Classic that you are not playing do you most hope is in the hands of someone with a reasonably good sense of the overall map dynamics, unit abilities and the way various provinces and powers relate to one another?

A pity it turned out as it did.

It was poised interestingly, although I suspect it was mostly "Let's kill the non-voting people". The I/R/T scramble was fun. Given Germany's latest push into Venice, I feel Russia would have come out on top of Turkey unless Germany built armies and sent them east (unlikely)

Faster Than The Speed of Light.
Some breaking news yesterday from CERN that subatomic particles seem to have beaten the speed of light. Very exciting and, although CERN wants the results checked again before publishing, such an extraordinary claim that I thought I'd bring it to attention here on the forum.

Correction - u r right, for some reason the third group c game is still going

What is wrong with people???!!!???

Thanks Cockney. I'd like to think that if I was in someone else's tournament, and two of three games got cancelled, and more than half the people in the last game voted to cancel, I'd take a look to see what was going on, or even try and contact the td.

If the four people who voted to cancel the game want to contact me via PM, I'll get this started without the other three.

Well, I wasn´t aware the tournament are yours, I thought it was a webdip tournament and you are the TD. Also, I didn´t know that we should vote cancel (I understood that the mods will be cancelling the games).

So, feel free to replace me as I really think this tournament is going down and your poor attitude with the players is one of the problems.

rd- how about a bit of gratitude eh????

He organises this pretty well. Managing 28 players who log on at different times is always gona be tough! Give the guy a break

santosh (335 D)

@rd If you've been following this thread, the entire reason we're having issues is because we're slightly short on mod time, so your expectation was unreasonable. Further, trip specifically requested the players to cancel their games, and other players have voted Cancel. According to tourney rules, you're supposed to keep a watch on this thread.

Draug has mentioned that it's hard to keep in touch with a thread that grows at this rate, and I agree, which is why a new announcements thread is being created. Patience is the key word here. I understand the restriction on the same country being twice has been lifted, so this time, there is no reason why it should not go through.

''I understand the restriction on the same country being twice has been lifted''

?Then why cancel in the first place? We could be in 1903-04 by now.
santosh (335 D)
17 Sep 11 UTC
The original intention was to have different countries in the hope of trying to make it as even as possible. That would have required

1. Active players who keep themselves informed of the situation, respond to requests by the td, AND better forum management by the td

2. More mod time to get the swaps and exchanges done.

We did not have either of these, and we found out the hard way. As a result, in many games, some players followed forum posts and submitted no moves, others did. You can't continue a game like that.

fulhamish (4134 D)

@santosh

I understand, let's get on with it then with a rigid nmr policy, particularly in view of your first comment.
fulhamish (4134 D)
17 Sep 11 UTC
Are we sure about the 10 day phase length on the games you have put up? We will be well into the Spring/Summer of next year be the time we finish, particularly if a stroppy player does not click ready. I suggest a 24/36 hour phase.
fulhamish (4134 D)

*Particularly as it is a gunboat.
santosh (335 D)
17 Sep 11 UTC
That is just so we have enough time to make sure everything is in place. Passworded games start as soon as everyone has joined. I did not want to risk having players not log in for a day and suddenly miss a phase.

I'll message the mods as soon as everyone has confirmed they're in and ready, and the mods can change the phase back to 36 hr/phase. This might take a couple of days, but my feeling was it is gunboat anyway, so we can Ready when our moves are in.
fulhamish (4134 D)
17 Sep 11 UTC
OK Santos, that sounds very sensible, let's hope that the mods have enough time to action this, Thank you for all of your efforts.

@ rd: yes, its a tourney on webdip and the mods absolutely help, but the organization (poor at the moment), keeping track of all the games for nmrs on a daily basis, and finding replacements and such is on my shoulders. i view it as mine only because i care, not for a pats on the back or anything like that.

i had been asking repeatedly for players to cancel the games. i went to the mods because it wasn't happening.

i will always admit when i screw up, as i did when i realized i should have started with the phases longer, but i don't take shit from people. if someone asks a question or voices a complaint, i'm respectful in my answering. if people give me attitude, i give it back.

i'm honestly sorry to hear that you won't be joining us.

@ santosh: please wait for me before starting games. i want to try and keep going to the mods at an absolute minimum, so the phases are going to be set at 36hrs.

I'm leaving in an hour for a little weekend holiday. Monday I will start a new thread just for info and get this thing rolling.

If the Group C game can get cancelled, that would be great, and everyone is invited to come back. I may have been a bit harsh above.
santosh (335 D)
17 Sep 11 UTC
?!

1. We can agree to Ready until the mods get around to changing the phase lengths. Sure, somebody can be difficult, but I think everyone's waited long enough.

2. I don't see what waiting until Monday is going to do. We would really like to get started.
Sargmacher (0 DX)

I get the impression this has run out of steam - no one seems interested in threads for this topic any more, everyone seems to have been completely turned off.

Perhaps a fresh start, re-advertise as a new tournament, and ask for people's emails. Geofram ran a great system for his tournament - so maybe stick to that because as the phrase goes if it's not broke, don't fix it. Santosh, you seem keen to run a tournament, what do you think?
santosh (335 D)
17 Sep 11 UTC
I think trip's put in a chunk of effort into this one, and I really want to make it stick. I'm sure things will smoothen out once the ganes actually get underway.

I hope starting that announcements thread will put some life back into it. The thread goes down far too quickly, unfortunately. I blame forum trolls :D
I'd definitely still love to be a part of the tourney if it re-starts. I was quite disappointed with what happened.

I don´t want to be the one that only make demans and criticize, but haven´t trip asked to wait for Monday to start the games?
And how the other groups are supposed to act? And there is one game in group C that isn´t cancelled yet (one player voted for a pause instead of a cancel).

santosh (335 D)
18 Sep 11 UTC
1. As I understand, trip's only objection to our games was that we would have to get the mods to change the time / phase. That's already been done, and we're onto Autumn 1901, and everyone has submitted moves, so the games are underway exactly as per tourney regulations.

2. We're only acting in the best interests of keeping the tourney going. I understand that in some groups, people have left in a huff, and it's upto trip to decide, when he returns, whether to recall them or draft in new people. Group B has remained intact. It doesn't make sense to shuffle all groups around because some people need to be replaced.

3. I think trip's instructions to wait until Monday are so that he's around to answer questions, and we don't frustrate more players by having to cancel a new set of games for whatever reason, which I think is sensible.

So the Group B games are on under the assumption that the only changes are the new info thread, getting in some new players in the other groups, and same game regulations, which is quite a reasonable set, I think.

Donor Status
Question- I have a bronze donor symbol by my name. Is this fair within the game? Does it help my play, grant me "serious player" status so my word gets respected? Or make me a target instead?

I know that I look for that symbol in every game I am now entering. I treat others different when I see it. Is this part of the "spirit" of Diplomacy?

Low Pot, High GR, Fun Game.
I'm thinking a 20-50 D pot, with 7 reasonably high GR-rated players for a classic, full press, 36hr, password game.

I would like to see some old faces and welcome new ones too.
