Rules of life?
Does anyone has some sort of rules they live by, like the Ten Commandments? Semper Fidelis? Carpe Diem? Anything you live by?

An important one for me would be: Sometimes you're wrong.
I'm thinking of making a list for myself so I know what I want if it ever gets to a rash decision of big importance or something...

Discuss NOT global warming, but the "religious" aspects of the belief:

Yes - the American Thinker is a stupid magazine, and their thoughts are stupid. We shouldn't discuss the irrational religious beliefs of people. Carry on, ignorant masses...Abge thinks it is OK for you to believe without cause, facts or reason...

Sorry Abge, but *most* people I know who believe in global warming barely have enough intelligence to read a thermometer, but they will take it as fighting words if you tell them global warming might be false and present them with data that is contrary to their *religious* belief.

You calling this topic stupid...proof in the pudding, my friend. You make my case.

If I had suggested an article that claims Conservative political beliefs are tied to religious trappings (not religion, but religious trappings), you'd agree and give me examples...

"It is no coincidence that man-made global warming, or climate change, or whatever it's called this week, got very popular as an issue just as the Soviet Union fell. It is the top-down centralized government's last best hope of controlling the masses. And like other forms of socialist totalitarian worldviews, it is a religion as well."

Why would anyone take something seriously that started off with this?
krellin (80 DX)
08 Mar 13 UTC
And here come the Global warming advocates...sniping the concept, throwing insults rather than providing rational discussion, because it hurts them to have their religion attacked. Keep it up bo...you are a particularly fine example of the ignorant masses who can't scratch up a fact to save his life
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
08 Mar 13 UTC
Most people believe whatever they want to believe irregardless of facts. That isn't a knock against climate change, it just means people are stupid. The same argument can be made for any subject, but that has no bearing on the legitimacy of that subject.
jimgov (219 D(B))
08 Mar 13 UTC
@krellin - I know. I hate people using facts against me too. Or actually reading the article that I linked to. I want to listen to a small sliver of people who think the way I do. Never mind facts.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
08 Mar 13 UTC
What rational discussion would you like to have? That some people believe in climate change with out good reason? Sure. People believe a lot of things with no good reason. That doesn't mean that climate change isn't real just because some people who agree with it are ignorant.
krellin (80 DX)
08 Mar 13 UTC
Abge - ever look at the political proposals and legislation that is wrapped around the "cause" of global warming advocates. It is usually socialist and totalitarian! AND...it is usually NOT debatable. AND...it is titled with and ever-changing name "Global Warming" was not the first name for the movement, and it is now replaced with "Climate Change".

Everything in that statement is TRUE, Abge, if you took off the religious blinders and took an *honest* look at the press surrounding the movement, and examined the extreme legislative efforts that are tied to it.

Obama *promised* to bankrupt the coal industry, for god's sake, just as one example of totalitarian leanings!
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
08 Mar 13 UTC
@krellin

You are mixing two different things together.

The research supporting climate change is sound. It is happening; there is proof.

How politicians and the media decide to deform that truth is a separate issue. I agree that many environmental policies don't actually help and I also believe that the media spins things out of proportion. That does not, though, take away from the actual science behind these exaggerated claims.
krellin (80 DX)
08 Mar 13 UTC
And you (purposely?) miss the point -- I don't want to discuss whether or not the movement is based upon fact or fiction. I think the societal make-up of the movement - the idea that it *does* take on religious overtones to persuade and capture people in to the movement - is very interesting.

Imagine if people were manipulated so easily in to...oh, I don't know...believing that black men were less than human...or that Jews should be removed from the earth. THAT sort of religiously zealous belief that society has been subjected to in the past, with less-than-postiive outcomes.

The idea that society is *possibly* being manipulated with religious fervor to believe what should simply be scinetific fact or fiction is....disturbing.

Green Earth movement...decides we farm too much, use too much energy...decides the earth is overpopulated some time in the near future...and seeks to purge the earth of the excess of humanity....

Oh...wait...there ARE people in the religion of Earth Worship that *already* believe this.

THAT is why it is a valid topic of discussion.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
08 Mar 13 UTC
Yeah, I understand what you're saying. It just doesn't seem worth talking about, certainly in this vague manner. If there was a particular policy you wanted to discuss, that would be different.

But, to claim some people are sheep towards any subject is neither interesting nor surprising.
krellin (80 DX)
08 Mar 13 UTC
abge - the research is not sound, and it is not there...and that is not the topic. Please find the other thread floating around today to link to an article that links to scientific discussion of just such a topic. but it is NOT the topic of this thread.

RIGHT OR WRONG - "global warming" is a religion. Religions can persuade people to do things they otherwise would not do...And interestingly enough, the priesthood is ignoring the ten commandments most of the time...fiddling with little boys in the back room...errr...I mean flying private jets around and living in energy sucking mansions...
krellin (80 DX)
08 Mar 13 UTC
Not interestig or surprising...and yet I sucked you in to my dialogue none the less! Mwaaa ha ha ha ha!
krellin (80 DX)
08 Mar 13 UTC
"I agree that many environmental policies don't actually help and I also believe that the media spins things out of proportion." So....because of the religious fervor around the belief, we are spoon-fed policy which is not helpful to the so-called problem...AND MAY HARM US...

...and you don't see this as a problem?

Were global warming not viewed in religious terms, it would not hold such power to push through bad legislation (MERCURY-filled light bulbs, for example, that are overpriced and inneffective...)

There is a *real world* cost to the religion of global warming. This cost can and is imposed - I suggest - *purely* because people hear "global warming" and can't hear anything else...and politicians use the catch phrase to shut down debate, and pass bullshit legislation. Why? Because their lobbyist pay them off...
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
08 Mar 13 UTC
Yeah, but congress does stupid things all the time. If they accidentally help the environment in the process, that's better than post of the things they do.
krellin (80 DX)
08 Mar 13 UTC
We have a growing population...and a weakening energy infrastructure...which in the future could lead to real problems - rolling blackouts, for example, which can endanger lives. This is a real world consequence to the religion of global warming causing politicians to enact harmful legislation.

Earth first fools killed the nuke industry in the US...want to kill coal...want to kill oil and gas...but not one has offered up a *viable* replacement to power our cities...and yet foolish politicians march along, trying to continue to recklessly enact dangerous energy policy using he religious terminology of global warming to scare and coral the ignorant masses.

This is a real world problem when you mis-use your religion.

I have to say, I do find it interesting that when looking for a word to describe people completely devoid of reason, you chose "religion".

Honestly, as long as there are people who still flat-out deny climate change, I have a hard time criticizing climate zealots.

Global warming is a myth, global means everywhere and where I live its colder here then it was 6 months ago.

How do 'scientists' explain that?
krellin (80 DX)
08 Mar 13 UTC
I don't deny climate changes. Climate obviously changes...on it's own...hence, you know, there used to be glaciers where the Great Lakes are, for example.

I deny man is "destroying" the planet ( real terminology of the extreme climate change religion crowd), and deny any imminent catastrophic climate change...especially since the last decade as a whole has demonstrated cooling trends...which the climate change crowd will deny, despite facts opposing their religiously held belief.

As for "religion" = "lack of reason". Sure...faith in Jesus Christ is "faith", not "reasoned out, logical conclusion". I accept those terms, as does any rational Christian (of which there are few, I know...)
Fasces349 (0 DX)

I think the easiest way to disprove climate change is to look at the facts:
We have 4 terrestrial planets in our solar system:
Venus: 96.5% of atmosphere is CO2
Mars: 95.32% of atmosphere is CO2
Mercury: 0.15% of atmosphere is CO2
Earth: 0.041% of atmosphere is CO2

If mankind is creating CO2 then how come Earth has less CO2 then the other planets put together?
Fasces349 (0 DX)
08 Mar 13 UTC
(+3)
Lastly Scientists claim that we are 'destroying' the planet.

In 1991 there were 9 known planets, now there are 869.

If we are destroying planets then how come there are more planets today then there were 22 years ago.

Besides the only 'destroyed' planet in the last 22 years is Pluto, and mankind doesn't live there.

Ok. This is it. Climate change is occurring. Facts aside, it you haven't personally noticed an increasing trend in extreme weather phenomena you must be living under a rock or purposefully ignoring these occurrences. Hurricanes in the Northeast US, one of the largest droughts in the recorded history for the Midwest, freak blizzards, tornadoes, hurricanes with increasing frequency every year. Now I'm only 23 but even I can notice this trend in my short life. And that's just it, what we are talking about here is a trend, not a single instance, but groups of instances, all put together.

Now here is a fact. Recently published in the the journal "Science" (this is a very well known and respected journal) was a study showing that global temperatures have reach their hottest point in 4,000 years. Yes, that's right 4,000 years! For you creationists, and I'm sure there are some of you out there, that's like half the existence of this planet.

So yes, studies have shown that we are currently exiting an ice age. The planet naturally changes in temperature over time, but usually not this fast. Pumping billions of tons of carbon into the atmosphere every year is going to have some effect. How could it not, so yes we are certainly speeding up natural processes of global climate change.

Btw, Fasces, I hope your are trolling with some of those earlier posts, because (I don't use this word much) they were just plain and simply stupid. Talking about how other planets have so much more carbon?! Have you ever noticed only one of those planets you listed has life on it??
krellin (80 DX)
08 Mar 13 UTC
"it you haven't personally noticed an increasing trend in extreme weather phenomena" No, i have noticed an increase in media in the world that reports on increased frequency about EVERYTHING. Real data does not support this assertion.

"Pumping billions of tons of carbon into the atmosphere every year is going to have some effect." Funny thing about carbon...PLANTS EAT IT...so...<yawn...>

Funny thing about carbon...atmospheric levels LAG temperature changes. i.e. Temps go up THEN CO2 goes up.

Oh...snap...don't you hate when facts interfere with religious belief.

Point Tax
It seems to me there is a great disparity in the number of pints people have, with some having earned thousands, and other often stuck below 100. It is time to implement a Point Tax, perhaps monthly, to supplement to lower-tiered players who can not/will not earn and save points. Who's in???

Advice to a new online player
Hey--

Although I'm no stranger to board games, or negotiating games (there's a Game of Thrones boardgame that--at least when I play it--includes a Diplomacy-style negotiating phase) I am new to Diplomacy. Needless to say, I'm new to this site as well. As a 30-something high-school history teacher familiar with strategy/negotiation, what is the best advice a long-time player can offer me?
