Face to face
Played my first face to face last weekend. Bought an 18 pack of PBR and played with 6 total on the board. 3 of us had played before and 3 never. Ended up the 3 that had played drew E/F/G. We made it to 1905 before we ran out of time, but one of the noobs was hooked immediately and ordered the game online next day. He's trying to set up another face to face this weekend.

Sitter
I need a sitter from the 19th through the 27th... it may go a day or so beyond that as well. I hope to have most of my games paused but I'll still have between 5-8 to play. None are shorter than 24 hour phases. If anyone is available and could do this, I'll pay you in hugs and maybe a box of chocolates if you're dumb enough to give an ass like me your mailing address.

Thanks :D

webdip identity
Possibly, I brought this up already, but I find this interesting. When I'm on webdiplomacy.net arguing / playing Diplomacy, am I redhouse, or am I the person behind the computer?

In other words, what if people find out I'm redhouse and they read something about me here, can I say "look, that's redhouse's opinion, but it's a character I'm playing on this site, so don't pin me down to it?"
NigeeBaby (100 D(G))
15 Jan 13 UTC
Redhouse1938 is not synonymous with a character or personality that anyone knows so people will see your comments and make an assumption that they are the real person and not the alias. i.e. you, you're just using the alias because as a nickname and possibly to mask your real identity, I could have used my real name Nigel Bushbaby but I'm not sure that is as much fun as NigeeBaby, I suppose it depends on how serious you want to be taken. Why do we all use an alias, I suppose it is better if you are offensive to people otherwise they will track you down on the tinternet and kill you or worse ......

redhouse: absolutely.

Some of you may recall a long post I made some time ago regarding "the value of fat women in society." This is definitely a YJ post, and in no way reflects the opinions of the man behind the facade. Unfortunately, it got out to one of my "real life" female friends, who really gave me hell for it as a misogynist, and she definitely didn't understand the "rules of engagement" for online conduct.

On the other hand, most anything I say in seriousness is absolutely the "real" me. How one can tell the difference I leave to the reader to figure out.

As an interesting side note, when my friend (who happens to be educated, rather beautiful, and gregarious) challenged me, all of our male friends took her side, and old YJ was left to man the guns by himself. Not surprisingly, after the smoke cleared, to a man, each one approached me afterwords to comment on how hilarious my post was.

Ahh, the delicious hypocrisy of the natural male who thinks a little white lie may get him closer to sex with a hottie. I bet if she was a fat girl they wouldn't have bothered to take her side.

Also, Nigee, there is no way in hell your name is Nigel Bushbaby. I refuse to believe it.
That's his name, YJ.

And everything I write down here reflects me, not an alias.

It's all you. To the extent you want to pretend it's "the real you" creating a "fake online you" and acting differently, you're still acting out an aspect of you. Then the real question is why you feel you can't express yourself "in real life" the same way you do when you're using the "fake online you" shield/crutch/mask -- whether it's jokey, flirty, or hateful.
redhouse1938 (429 D)
15 Jan 13 UTC
@YJ you mean the shade to my cool guests comment? That was both very funny and very cruel, yes, I recall that vividly :D
Anything that you including a character that you choose to protray definitely reflects you and your personality. This is non-negotiable. Anyone who thinks they behave differently on webdip because they are "playing a character" is probably disapointed by the person they become when physical/tangible contact is removed and is trying to convince themselves they are not truly this person they detest.

@YJ You're clearly an ass. You just don't have the balls to be one in real life.
Yellowjacket (835 D(B))
15 Jan 13 UTC
Haha THM that's exactly what she said!

And the answer is, as far as I'm concerned, that polite society (especially when the genders mix) often frowns on the hilarious. It isn't a shield or a crutch, I'd say the same things joking about with my friends. It's more a question of what is acceptable socially.

If you ask me, it's those very friends who, when confronted, pretended to be horrified by my little rant who are the ones hiding. I stand by my words to the end if I believe them, and in this case, I believe them to be truly funny.

Surely you can agree that some jokes are appropriate in some contexts where others are not. The internet is a universal context. Nothing is inappropriate.

@Lando, nah, I'm an ass IRL too. Basically the same guy with a slightly more tempered approach. Thanks for judging. Does this mean we can't be friends?

@Red, yeah, that one, among many others in the same thread.

"That is a nonsense"

Really? Nigee, why do you say that? And is the extra "a" a typo or a British thing?

Go to google and type "Smeagle porn" into an image search. Seriously. I've never run that search, but we both know you're going to get a disturbing number of hits.
Sure, there are differences in what is appropriate in various social contexts. That's still you, exercising your discretion in what is appropriate for a given context. It's not two different yous.
No, it doesn't preclude that. I tend to have some asshole qualities as well. However, I am not really sure what we would have to offer each other. Chances are you'll forever be in my "acquaintance" zone.
Yellowjacket (835 D(B))

@THM

I agree, and as I said, if you agree (and you probably don't) that there is no such thing as an inappropriate use of the internet (OK, barring kiddy porn and such), then there is nothing I could say that is inappropriate for the context of an online forum.

@Lando:

My heart weeps. For now. You'll come around ;)
Why are you carving out kiddy porn? All or nothing, you backpedaler.

And yes, I disagree.

I'm a different person at work, at home, at this friend's house and that friend's house. I'm a different person on here, but they're all me, to some extent.

@YJ Smeagle porn is great because Smeagle can learn any move you want him or her to learn, including Palkia's Spacial Rend. Mmm yes, Spacial Rend....

However, you don't really seem the Pokemon lover, so I think maybe you meant Smeagol, the alter ego of Gollum. That, yes, that would be disturbing.
ulytau (541 D)

The proverbial shitholes of the internet have much higher tolerance to kiddy porn than to animal abuse, just like Hitler had.

Which reminds me we need a Hitler thread. Hitler is one of my favourite comedy themes.

Why all the Lori Grimes hate?
I'm only through the second episode of season three of Walking Dead, but why all the Lori Grimes hate? We've all done dumb things, like drive off in a car without telling anyone and crashing into a walker, and who hasn't lost a child (a few hundred times), so beyond the obvious complaints (crashing car, losing son), why all the Lori Grimes hate?
