The Ancient Med - not year 1
What year is the Ancient Mediterranean set? Definitely not year 1AD, by then the Med was a Roman Lake. Carthage was destroyed in 146BC, Egypt fell to Rome in 47BC, Greece had been Roman for centuries. Only Persia can claim some independence on that map.

It's my webDip Birthday!
I'm 5 years old and about to play my 100th game! I would like to invite friends, new and old, to play. To be eligible, I'd ask you make a donation to the site (of any amount). WTA 36 Hours non-anon. Express your interest below. And, of course, thanks to Kestas, the mods, and the peanut gallery for making this the best site on the Internet.

17 games, 17 players
Who's in? 17 world gunboats, one game as each nation, 50 hour phases, WTA, anon, ready-up preferred (but no means required), only prearranged pauses (example, if someone insists on a winter break pause, we will ask the mods to unpause at an agreed time if we don't unpause ourselves by then), 5 D bets for a total of 85 D buy-in. Who's in?

Balancing the map
Has anyone tried seeing what would happen if Albania was made into a supply center and Serbia was turned into an ordinary neutral? I would expect stronger wars between A/I and between R/T. Thoughts, please.

The CD Takeover Challenge
Just an informal challenge

I haven't been playing many games recently, but over the next few months I plan on playing out some CD takeovers just for fun and to help out a bit with reducing the number of games with CDs ruining them.

So, in order to make this overall exercise a bit more fun and hopefully to entice others to follow suit, I propose the following challenge:

1) You participate by taking over CD positions in games and playing them out. Takeover as many or as little as you can, but please properly play them out to the end.
2) You get 3 D for each CD takeover played out to the end. You lose 1 point for any NMR in ANY of your games. You lose 10 D for CDing (regardless of whether you are later replaced/defeated) in ANY of your games. Rejoining a game that you CDed from does not count as a CD takeover, but prevents the 10 point penalty, however, you must still deduct the 1 point NMR penalty for each missed turned.
3) If you want to participate, post your progress in this thread, updating your point total after each game has ended.
4) The points are just for this little challenge and don't have any impact on site rankings and the like. The person with the most points gets... bragging rights?
5) The challenge is completely informal, and will run until people lose interest or this thread dies.

Great idea.
A couple of thoughts on the downsides. The mods unfortunately won't support much of the point awards. I guess difficult to realize, too.
The neighboring countries of the CD get pissed when they realize they won't get SCs for free. (Well, that's an upside, actually)
This exercise will wreck your GR, if you care about that (speaking from experience here)
Partysane (10754 D(B))

So if i take over a position that CDed i am to post here as soon as i took it over and again when the game ended? I guess the game ID needs to be postet aswell?

So for example i take over a CDed position and post here

I took over the position of England in gameidXXXXX. My total CD Takeover Challenge point score is 0.

And then after the game has concluded i post the same message but update my score to 3?
2ndWhiteLine (2601 D(B))
10 Dec 12 UTC
Could you set these games up as to be exempt from GR? Even if one were to win, as unlikely as that is, I wouldn't want to join to avoid the potential hit on my GR.
yebellz (729 D(G))

@Vilkas:
See item 4, the points are NOT WebDip points. They're just a number to track the progress of each participant of this challenge. The participants of this challenge don't get any point/ranking rewards, just bragging rights.

If anything, this might be somewhat detrimental to one's points, ranking, record, etc. However, I don't think on should put too much weight in those.

@yebellz - As Partysane wondered, what about posting at start. I'd say that it would be good for non-anon games, but posting a game ID of a position you took over on an anon would give away who you were in that game. Right?
It doesn't have to be a point hit or GR hit. That just means you aren't good enough :p (also you just have to choose the right ones to take over)

gameID=105382 took over Russia. (opportunity for someone to take over Germany)

goldfinger - 3 D
yebellz (729 D(G))
10 Dec 12 UTC
@Partysane, yeah something like that is fine. Just updating your point total is alright as well. Please only post AFTER the game has finished though, in order to avoid revealing your ID in anon games and to avoid starting any discussions about ongoing games.

10 Dec 12 UTC
@Draug, yeah it's not really too big of a deal to post about joining a non-anon game, since it's unlikely that it'll start any discussion about it. Posting about any anon game will almost certainly give away you identity and should be avoided.

I already do this when I find live games I can join but inevitably there are big armies that come and crush you so I just hang on as long as I possibly can with one or two armies, I've never won a game doing this but it brings a little integrity back to live play for the other contestants. If you Draw/Cancel every game when someone CDs you'd never get to finish a game, I reckon over 50% of the gunboats I play in have at least one CD by the end of year 4.....

Are there any rules to takeovers? I know from experience that there's nothing more annoying than a CD Turkey that's been dead for years but exists because it's neighbours are too busy fighting to mop it up, suddenly come alive seconds before the end of a phase and kick you up the jacksie.
Octavious (2701 D)
10 Dec 12 UTC
I would suggest only taking over a CD in a build/retreat phase in a live game, or with at least 12 hours to go in a phase in a long game... But maybe I'm being silly :p

@Oct - so don't ever trust CDs to saty dead. You wouldn't trust an ally not to stab would you? So why trust the CD to stay dead unless it's a password protected game?

Draws
Sifting through 10 pages of open positions, I am noticing that it's increasingly uncommon that people actually draw for a CD. In a few games, people have pushed for it, and others have seemed to have no understanding as to why they'd draw for a CD. Did this etiquette just disappear like magic? Pre-1903 CDs should *always* constitute a draw and post-1903 CDs should constitute a draw if they result in a loss of a line that would otherwise be present. When did this stop?
