Is there a game option for a preference list or first come first serve?
Is there a game option for a preference list or first come first serve?I did not see it in the new game options. Getting random countries totally sucks. The first 3 times I got the countries I least wanted - the 4th time my country was ganged up on in the first turn. playdiplomacy.com has both options available for its game.

disabling notices for live games?
this must have been asked before, but is there anyway of disabling the move notices in live games? i don't care as much about the "you lost" or "player x won the game" messages, but what if someone sent me a message while the game was in progress? i might never get it, cause my homepage only displays the last i don't know, 20 messages or something, and those all get filled during the live game. or is there a way of seeing a history of older messages?

English spelling reform

Greetings forum community,

A short while ago it became aware to me that the spelling of the English language has not been changed for a century or so. I myself am not a native speaker, and in my language the relation between written words and spoken language is very direct. As my thesis is that the written language should follow the spoken language, I think it's time the UK and/or the US consider a serious spelling revision.

Some examples:

Language - mostly pronounced as [lengwich]. A better spelling would be langwich, so lose the 'uage'.

Enough - on the internet one may frequently spot 'enuf' instead of 'enough'. While enuf perhaps is an ugly word it captures the fonetics better. Perhaps 'enufh'?

Though - I've seen on this site 'though' changing into 'tho'. A much better suited word IMHO. Same goes for 'altho'.

* So, should there be a serious spelling revision?
* And if so, which words would you like to see changed?

Game on!

Ursa, before you go down this ill advised route, may I remind you that in your language a spelling authority exists that the English language lacks. English spelling is based on "common usage", i.e., what you find in literature to be the dominant spelling is the right spelling. That's probably because the English speaking world is so much vaster than the Dutch-speaking one :-)
"-uage" and "-ough" are such pretty endings, though. I can't get enough of visually-pleasing endings in a language.

That may be so, but what if the [w]ritten lang[wich] is a serious deficiency for young students to learn to [w]rite?
redhouse1938 (429 D)
18 Feb 12 UTC
I'll accept lengwhich but only if we can start writing sanduage.
Is it? English is more difficult to learn, certainly, but I note that it's because of archaic grammar rules and not word spelling.

I must say, I know NOBODY who pronounces "language" "langwich." First thing might be to have somebody carry out the reforms who can actually pronounce the language.

In any case, I'm with PE. Our language is pretty, and the supposed "troubles to the young" are not that bad. Plenty of them grow up to write beautiful things with their language, and I wouldn't want it to be a whit less inspiring for them.

@semck83: and how do you pronounce language?
semck83 (229 D(B))
18 Feb 12 UTC
With a g, as it's spelled. Oh, sure, it may not be distinguishable in every sentence, but there's no question that's how I'm saying it. It's the same as suggesting "fudge" should be spelled "fuch." There's a far more pronounced trailing j sound with the "dge" ending.
Ursa (1617 D)
18 Feb 12 UTC
So you say [langwach]? Interesting.
semck83 (229 D(B))
18 Feb 12 UTC
No, I do not. No form of the "ch" sound ends the word "language" for me.
One of my close friends is studying linguistics... maybe I could ask him what he thinks.
semck83 (229 D(B))
18 Feb 12 UTC
Ursa, in short, if you wanted a more simple-minded phonetic spelling of how I say "language," it would be [lang-wij]. Put differently, I end it with IPA d3, and I end "sandwich" with IPA tS.
semck83 (229 D(B))
18 Feb 12 UTC
(Finally, I'll note that I had to add a hyphen in the above phonetic spelling to emphasize the break between the g and the w. This is exactly what the current spelling, "language," does so well.)
ursa, the english written language is a beautiful language which is unfortunately butchered on a daily basis. This is horrible enough as it is, and i would hate to see that become official policy.

Uptil unto a while ago I would actually agree with you. In Holland there are quite some spelling or grammar nazis who feel the language is detoriating. However, the written language always follows the spoken language. You could say the spoken language is the living language, inventing new words or pronounciations and borrowing words from other languages (in Dutch we use quite some words out of the English language). In that case written language is the 'dead' or 'instilled' language: spoken language penned down. Futhermore, spoken language is the more important of the two. So, written language should follow spoken language (and not the other way around) and if the written spelling differs much from the spoken word it should be changed.

"spelling or grammar nazis"?
Where... exactly do I find these?
Salmaneser (6327 D)

If you want to stay as close to spoken language as possible, it should be spelled langwidzj/lengwidzj. That doesn't look like English anymore.

It could be helpful to adapt that to the Dutch language though, people wouldn't make as many mistakes in their verbs then :)
semck83 (229 D(B))
18 Feb 12 UTC
Right.... again, though, you don't actually seem to have a very good handle on the ways in which the spoken word does and doesn't differ from spelling. Moreover, I think your complaint is less that written language doesn't reflect changing pronunciation than that it's just too danged complicated. For example, as I've already pointed out, "language" actually much better reflects the way that word is pronounced than does "langwich" (given, of course, English pronunciation rules), yet you prefer the latter for simplicity. This is quite another matter.

Finally, "should be changed" by whom? We don't have an academy, thank God.

The English language favors etymology in its written form. That helps people to see how words are related to each other, but it makes it more difficult to write. Thus, it is harder for beginners, but more useful once you learn the language.

My native language, Portuguese, favors a phonological approach to writing. It is easier to learn, but makes it harder to see how words are related.

Both approaches have their merits and flaws, but changing from one to the other is quite radical.
Octavious (2701 D)
18 Feb 12 UTC
Indeed. I refuse to even consider that English needs some kind of coordinated reform until other langauges drop their painfully idiotic masculine and feminine words bollocks.
Maniac (189 D(B))

Whilst changing the spelling of some words may help those learning to spell it can only hinder those who can spell already and have to try and decipher the new spellings. My grandmother would look at words like 'lang-wij' and struggle to put any meaning to it. We would create an even wider divide between the generations. Let our spelling systen develop naturally.

BTW, If anyone really struggles with a particular spelling rule, let me know. I was perhaps the world's worst speller (possibly because I couldn't speak properly until quite late) so I invented a number of characters that help me with just about every British pelling rule there is.

All English speakers' accents are so varied, we need to have concrete rules for spelling that aren't phonetic. I'm canadian (uninlflected English) and would sound like a drunk if I said "language" as "lengwich"......keep spelling as it is please
