Was John Pemberton a seer?
Really, could you possibly imagine a better name for a drink than Coca-Cola in regard to marketing potential of China? They say Jules Verne nailed all those means of transport we use today several decades in advance but Pemberton is the real deal here. Coca-Cola. Brilliant.

NFL Pick 'Em: Week 8
Inside the updated totals after Week 7 will be posted...as soon as I add them (or someone who already has it added up wants to post if, if they're faster.)

As we're at the half-way point of the season, lots of teams on bye and another week for blow-outs it seems. With the Packers on bye, who will dominate the weak...so--who'll win? PICK 'EM!

Someone I happen to see nearly everyday insists that Jesus was a socialist and/or advocated the philosophical and moral grounds/justifications for instituting socialism. I oppose socialism, but am not particularly religious, and thus not really angered by this statement; nevertheless, many Christians I know have been angered by this claim. Discussion/debate?

Hamas in the news.
Mind=Blown

OK, so we all know I'm a little biased, though I try to keep it down. But someone help me with something here. The major news agencies are falling over themselves suggesting that the release of Gilad Shalit has made Hamas look "good" or "better" in the world community. How? They traded 1 soldier, who was captured in a cross border raid in territory that is undisputedly owned by Israel for over 1000 Palestinian prisoners, including those who attempted failed suicide bombings or conspired with successful bombings which killed dozens. Yet this makes Hamas look "better"

Uh...
diplomat554 (2104 D)
19 Oct 11 UTC
What has happened to the world media's minds...
It's impossible to make a terrorist organization look any "better" than that. They have acted like animals. Period. If anything this story makes them look worse.
Tolstoy (1962 D)
19 Oct 11 UTC
Gilad Shalit was part of an organization that has directly killed over 6,000 Palestinians in the last ten years. Everyone in Hamas knows several someones who have been killed by the Israelis on Palestinian territory. I think they showed remarkable restraint in letting him live, especially considering their very tenuous physical situation (particularly during Cast Lead).

Would you've rather they'd chopped his head off?
diplomat554 (2104 D)
20 Oct 11 UTC
:O
Of course I'd rather not, but in case you hadn't noticed, Hamas has no respect for human life. It is not restraint to abuse the fact that some nations care about their citizens to retrieve innumerable murderers.
Tolstoy (1962 D)
20 Oct 11 UTC
If Hamas has no respect for human life they would've killed Shalit instead of taking him prisoner (even if you believe they kidnapped him solely for a prisoner swap, it certainly means they value the lives of prisoners of Israel).
diplomat554 (2104 D)
20 Oct 11 UTC
"(even if you believe they kidnapped him solely for a prisoner swap, it certainly means they value the lives of prisoners of Israel)"

Are you blind? If they valued Israeli lives, would they endorse shooting rockets at Israel? If they valued PALESTINIAN LIVES, for God's sake, would they use their own citizens as human shields? It is an atrocity that for an illegal raid, Hamas got legal criminals in insane amounts.

Why I say they have no respect for human lives? Do you think it's a fair deal? If Hamas respected the terrorists in Israeli jails' pitiful lives, they would have ransomed them fairly, not at the value of 1000 Palestinian lives=1 Israeli life.

I don't get it Tolstoy. Are you defending a terrorist organization?
rollerfiend (0 DX)
20 Oct 11 UTC
I think the fact that one israeli is worth 1000+ palestinians should be the center of this debate
diplomat554 (2104 D)
20 Oct 11 UTC
I don't see what there is to debate about that...all it means is that Hamas demands ridiculous prices.
Yes, incredible restraint for not killing a prisoner apparently worth 1000 Palestinian prisoners. Those humanitarians.
Im assuming Israeli restraint for not killing the 1000 prisoners needs to be comended as well. Am I correct?
Tolstoy (1962 D)
20 Oct 11 UTC
"If Hamas respected the terrorists in Israeli jails' pitiful lives, they would have ransomed them fairly, not at the value of 1000 Palestinian lives=1 Israeli life."

Baruch Godstein's Rabbi is reputed to've said "A million Arabs aren't worth a single Jewish fingernail". If that's the case, Hamas has been extreeeemely generous.

"If they valued Israeli lives, would they endorse shooting rockets at Israel?"

If Israel valued Palestinian lives, would they be blockading Gaza, preventing importation of food, medical, and other necessary supplies? Would they be spending 10+ years fomenting and encouraging a Palestinian civil war? Would they be dropping bombs from 10,000 feet on people who can't shoot back? Would they be erecting an Apartheid Wall that cuts Palestinian villages in half? Would they be assassinating Palestinian leaders left and right? Would they set up a system of checkpoints throughout Palestinian territory to make all commerce impossible? Would they be constructing Jewish-only settlements on Palestinian land and guzzling all the water for their swimming pools as Palestinian wells go dry? I could go on and on (and on...), but I'm sure this will be pointless. Israel shows at every turn that it views Arabs with nothing but contempt, at best as a source of cheap labor, and at worst as vermin that need to be "transfered" or exterminated.

Is he an official Israeli representative? I didn't think so. So why exactly do we care about a racist Jew's opinion of Arabs?

"Israel shows at every turn that it views Arabs with nothing but contempt, at best as a source of cheap labor, and at worst as vermin that need to be "transfered" or exterminated. "

And Hamas in your high-and-mighty opinion are poor angels? Attacked by tyrannical evil capitalist dictators Israel? Blockaded for no reason, except, perhaps, ATTEMPTING TO DESTROY ISRAEL? One of Hamas's missions is the destruction of Israel. This is an organization that sponsors terrorism, uses its own population as human shields, and wants to wipe out a legitimate nation. This is a terrorist organization!

I'm pretty sure if the Palestinians were donated F-16's and m16's of their own they would use those instead of home-made explosives attached their bodies. Would you still call them terrorists then?
diplomat554 (2104 D)

I don't understand your question rollerfiend. Terror tactics have nothing to do with what explosives are used...
Tolstoy (1962 D)

"So why exactly do we care about a racist Jew's opinion of Arabs?"

Perhaps because that 'racist Jew' had an opinion that is increasingly widespread in Israel? Don't make me bust out the Avigdor Lieberman quotes.

"And Hamas in your high-and-mighty opinion are poor angels? Attacked by tyrannical evil capitalist dictators Israel"

Well, except for the capitalist part, yes.

"Blockaded for no reason, except, perhaps, ATTEMPTING TO DESTROY ISRAEL?"

Get a grip. A bunch of half-starved Palestinians armed with homemade explosives and bottle rockets pose no existential threat to Israel.

"One of Hamas's missions is the destruction of Israel."

And part of the Zionist dream has always been to cleanse ("redeem") the land of gentiles.

" uses its own population as human shields"

Sorry, but when you have a million and a half people crammed into 140 square miles, it's hard to find enough space to present a good clean target for those 2 ton bombs that are being dropped on your head.
"I'm pretty sure if the Palestinians were donated F-16's and m16's of their own they would use those instead of home-made explosives attached their bodies. Would you still call them terrorists then? "

If they specifically, knowingly and intentionally target civilian targets to kill civilians as they do now... yes.

"
Baruch Godstein's Rabbi is reputed to've said "A million Arabs aren't worth a single Jewish fingernail". If that's the case, Hamas has been extreeeemely generous."

glad one rabbi is used to damn an entire people. Wonder what Hamas Imamas have to say about jews. Im sure its well balanced.
"Perhaps because that 'racist Jew' had an opinion that is increasingly widespread in Israel? Don't make me bust out the Avigdor Lieberman quotes."

Please and be sure to explain why they are much better than your Iranian buddies quotes. Oh I forgot, Muslim racism doesn't count, just like muslim violence doesn't count, or muslim hypocrisy doesn;t count. Criticism for that stuff is saved for the Jews. Oh I know you aren't an Anti-Semite, your an anti-zionist... right.

"And part of the Zionist dream has always been to cleanse ("redeem") the land of gentiles."

Bullshit, if so why are their israeli arab citizens?

I criticize Israel constantly, but in this case, just as when Israel was forced to release an admitted child murderer to return a dead body of a soldier, and the child murderer god a Hizballah parade, in these cases I think the freedom fighters show their true colors.
diplomat554 (2104 D)
20 Oct 11 UTC
Dear god, Tolstoy...
"Perhaps because that 'racist Jew' had an opinion that is increasingly widespread in Israel? "

There are racists and hate groups everywhere. What are you saying? I don't care about Israeli citizens' opinion of Arabs.

"A bunch of half-starved Palestinians armed with homemade explosives and bottle rockets pose no existential threat to Israel."

Are you trying to say they killed nobody, they're just doing it, ya know, for fun? Did 9/11 threaten to wipe America out? No, but did that mean it's OK for Bin Laden to destroy American buildings?

"And part of the Zionist dream has always been to cleanse ("redeem") the land of gentiles."

What? What????
Zionism (def.), a political movement for the establishment and support of a national homeland for Jews in Palestine, now concerned chiefly with the development of the modern state of Israel.
Where do you see murderous dreams? Is it in Israel's constitution? You truly upset me by reckoning Israel's beliefs as no better than a terrorist organization's when it comes to who should live/die.

Oh yeah, speaking of terrorist organization. You still haven't responded as to why you seem to be defending one.
Tom Bombadil (4023 D(G))
20 Oct 11 UTC
Many countries do not view Hamas as a terrorist organization, diplomat. Its hard to view things without the political trap that is trying to define groups as "terrorist" or not. If they do bad things against our interests, they are terrorists, but if they do bad things in our interest, it doesn't matter...

On a lighter side, is it just me or does Khaled Meshaal look like George Clooney.
How about blowing up civilian buses during rush hour with suicide bombers to derail the peace process? Does that qualify? Now have they progressed past those beginnings, thats arguable, but I think Hamas earned that designation.
Tom Bombadil (4023 D(G))
20 Oct 11 UTC
Oh. I obviously don't support any of their violent behavior, but I think people should know that just because the US says they are a terrorist org, doesn't mean that individuals should not come to their own conclusions.

That being said, I think it is unfair to say Hamas has no value for human life. They kept a man prisoner who was killing their people. I think them not killing him is a step in the right direction, regardless of the price they made Israel pay in the prisoner swap.
They kept him alive for the price they made Israel play. They knew how valuable he was. Israel has set a precedent for this sort of thing. I don't understand this commending Hamas for keeping him alive. They violated the Geneva convention throughout the captivity. They were downright cruel to his family, continually warning the father that his son was going to die. And in the end they got 1000-1 payoff for him.

Someone explain this to me. Israel was damned for the "disproportionate response" it delivered in cast lead, which I completely agree with. Cast lead was stupid, uselss, and damn near barbaric. Yet where is the chorus calling for proportional treatment now? Where are the denunciations of holding a kid for 5 years with no visits from the red cross no contacts with family or diplomatic go between in return for 1000 including murderers. What absolute, abject hypocrisy.
Putin33 (111 D)
20 Oct 11 UTC
This appears to help all involved. It does help Hamas, not necessarily internationally but more domestically, because Hamas can get credit for 1,027 prisoners being released while Abbas looks weaker from the UN initiative. I think that was a point in favor for Netanyahu. With Hamas stronger and Abbas weaker, there will be less reason to negotiate in the future.

It helps Egypt, and by extension Israel, because the military government can say it negotiated the deal. Israel must feel that Egypt's government was increasingly on the fritz, and this might be the last chance to resolve this 5 year old issue if the Muslim Brotherhood manages to take power.

It helps Israel, because with the Schalit issue resolved, it boosts his popularity and gives him room to manuever with the international community about Iran. Israel had been very isolated under Netanyahu's regime, and now Iran looks increasingly weak and isolated while Netanyahu can look statesmanlike.

Maybe also Israel thought if a new conflict erupts in Gaza, they got Shalit out of there so they don't need to worry so much about it.

But yeah, it does make Hamas look better internationally, they did compromise on some of the prisoners they wanted released, and also a number of them were deported or forced to go to Gaza instead of the West Bank. I think overall though it demonstrates the weakness of the Palestinian Islamists. Hizballah is bankrupt, quite literally. Syria is under siege. Iran's leadership is divided and Ahmadinejad is on his last legs. Hamas really wasn't going to get a better deal. And for that matter neither was Israel.

diplomat554 (2104 D)
20 Oct 11 UTC
I feel very happy for Shalit's return regardless. A step in the right direction? I don't know. It was a ridiculous price to pay, but negotiating with terrorists is never fair (I could and probably will present evidence that Hamas=terrorist, I'm not citing the U.S. gov't's opinions as a source :) just too tired/lazy now).
diplomat554 (2104 D)
20 Oct 11 UTC
Speaking of Egypt, Putin, I think their new government's role in these negotiations has been commendable. I had been pessimistic about the new regime but at least they play mediator well, notably when they refused Hamas's last minute move for more prisoners.
Tolstoy (1962 D)
20 Oct 11 UTC
"Yes, incredible restraint for not killing a prisoner apparently worth 1000 Palestinian prisoners. Those humanitarians."

Are you suggesting that it requires equal effort and risk for Hamas to hold onto Shalit as it does for Israel to imprison a Palestinian? Every Hamas gunslinger who worked a shift guarding Shalit was putting their life in danger - a rescue by Israeli commandos was something that was openly discussed, I believe. Not to mention the possibility that Israel might threaten the families of Shalit's guards if their identities became known.

"Please and be sure to explain why they are much better than your Iranian buddies quotes. Oh I forgot, Muslim racism doesn't count, just like muslim violence doesn't count, or muslim hypocrisy doesn;t count. Criticism for that stuff is saved for the Jews. Oh I know you aren't an Anti-Semite, your an anti-zionist... right."

Now who's painting with a broad brush.

"I criticize Israel constantly, but..."

So it's okay for you to criticize Israel, but any goy who does so is an anti-Semite. Do I have that right?

"why are their israeli arab citizens?"

Because Labor wanted to hold on to the Knesset and wasn't too concerned about maintaining the highest standards of the Zionist ideal at the time.

"Are you trying to say they killed nobody, they're just doing it, ya know, for fun?"

No, they've obviously killed people. Little innocent babies, too. The difference between us is that you believe Israel occupies a position of moral superiority because its killers have uniforms and drop their bombs from expensive jet aircraft and helicopters, while the Palestinians do not have snazzy uniforms and have to use live human bodies for their ordinance delivery system.

"Zionism (def.), a political movement for the establishment and support of a national homeland for Jews in Palestine, now concerned chiefly with the development of the modern state of Israel.
Where do you see murderous dreams?"

How about the words of Israel's founding fathers:
“We must expel Arabs and take their places." - David ben Gurion
"Spirit the penniless population across the frontier by denying it employment... Both the process of expropriation and the removal of the poor must be carried out discreetly and circumspectly." - Theodore Herzl
For more, this is a good list:
http://www.airliners.net/aviation-forums/non_aviation/read.main/622551/

" Where are the denunciations of holding a kid for 5 years with no visits from the red cross no contacts with family or diplomatic go between in return for 1000 including murderers."

This is not a 20th century conventional war between two equally matched nation states. Israel surveils every inch of Gaza. A visit from the red cross would more likely than not tip off the IDF to his location and result in an attempt to rescue him, which likely would've resulted in MORE deaths. Or the humanitarian visit itself could be used as a ruse for a rescue operation. Israel obviously had some proof he was still alive or there wouldn't have been a deal. And he wasn't a 'kid' - he was a grown man who is trained to kill people for a living, and wearing the uniform of a military that shows little hesitation in doing precisely that.

"How about blowing up civilian buses during rush hour with suicide bombers to derail the peace process? Does that qualify?"

Okay. So how do you feel about shelling refugee camps, declaring an immediate curfew on a Palestinian village and then gunning down dozens of Palestinians as they return from the fields for breaking said curfew, shooting down a civilian airliner, ordering Lebanese militias to massacre thousands of unarmed refugees, or any of hundreds of other Israeli attacks on civilians. Are these acts of terrorism, or just a long and constant stream of 'tragic accidents'?

"On a lighter side, is it just me or does Khaled Meshaal look like George Clooney."

OMG! The studios could hire this guy for pennies on the dollar and none would be the wiser. Would probably have to dub the voice, though.
I still think this sets a bad precedent. The soldier was captured from Israeli territory I believe, so what's stopping Hamas from capturing more soldiers and getting more of their prisoners back?

Also, in other news Turkey invaded Iraq. Lets hold them to the same standard the world holds Israel

Six of the Best
Politicians get a lot of bad press in the modern age, and sadly a lot of it is deserved. The vast majority can be safely ignored without any risk of missing anything remotely interesting or useful to our lives. But in the sea of mediocrity float a few stars, a small number of voices that are worth noting. My question is: which politicians still have the power to make you stop and listen? Lets see a list of six of your best!
