Wow, thanks Tom. I did read the explanation, which I think provides a great understanding of the reasoning behind the Ghost Rating system but the maths jargon is beyond and I did not see any clear and concise explanation of the difference between Ghost Ratings and the points/position we are given on our profile.

If you understand it so well, please could you point out to me the specific part of the explanation that elucidates this issue? Or could you briefly tell me yourself, in layman terms for me? Clearly you understand it much better than I do.

More specifically, on my profile, for example, it says that I am ranked "155 / 5684" - what exactly does that refer to?

Sorry, I know many people miss the explanation. Here's a quick explanation.


Basically, the points can sometimes be inaccurate as I could win a 700 pot game, but lose all my others. The point system also does not take into account the quality of the people you play. In Ghost Ratings, all 7 players put up their ghost rating into the "pot" and then the winner (or drawers) take that. That it distinguishes a 500 point win from a bunch of nobodies and a 500 point win from a bunch of quality players.

Your profile rank refers to you rank in the number of points you have. It does not have anything to do with Ghost Ratings.

Yes, I totally understand that part. What I mean is the ranking position we receive on our profile - what does that refer to? I can't seem to find an explanation of that. Thanks for taking the time to help explain it to me, I am still fairly new here so I appreciate it.

It means that in your case, 154 people have more points than you. And if I recall correctly it uses your points available not total. So your rank is using 1429, not your total points.

I'm really not good with computers and programming though but find the production of these Ghost Ratings really interesting. Are they produced using a computer programme? I'm guessing someone doesn't just sit there and count up every player's results?

Everyone starts with a GR of 100. When you sign up for a game, instead of putting in a fixed number of points, you're putting in 2/35 of your current points. The points in the pot are divided as they normally would be at the end of any game. So the higher-rated players in a game stand to lose more, and gain less. In a recent game, for example, I was one of the lower-rated players in a 5-way draw. My GR went up about 10 --the top-rated participant got maybe 2.

By the way, if you look at the distribution of the GR curve, it seems that 250-260 is a key point. That's where you really see numbers start to go up dramatically. So no matter what your rank is, I suggest that you don't get to feel really good about yourself until your GR stays over 260 for a considerable time.

So, although I've got a rating of 39 - it could easily drop again? Surely that would only happen if I started losing a lot of games consecutively?
