Finally a topic that matters...
I like to repeat myself when I say "my bad". As if it somehow reinforces the fact that I'm sorry for something. Stupid? I'll open it up for discussion.

Does anyone listen to classical music?
This may be the shortest lived thread ever, but I was wondering how many people listen to classical music. I'm curious to see if anyone here shares more interests with me than just diplomacy.

Yes, although I prefer classic rock.
Elgar's 'cello Concerto in E minor - great piece.

Sure. Most commonly piano pieces, since i play abit myself.
One of my favorites would be Chopin, crazy ass musical genius.

For crazy piano, you've got to look at Rachmaninoff!
sqrg (304 D)

Just for a sneak peak into Chopin: search youtube for his preludes, i like the ones from Evgeny Kissin a lot. There are some nice compilations where he plays them all.
Behold the splendour and variety!
And ofcourse this is only some preludes...

But sure Rachmaninoff, as i said if i listen classical music i'll listen to piano music. Great pieces, but just amazed by Chopin every time ;)

On a sidenote:
Beethoven - Moonlight Sonata movement 3 is hot stuff!

I must say that one of my very favorite composers has to be Shostakovich.

I really enjoy classical, especially the northern composers, eg grieg and tchaichoskvy

Tchaikovsky's 1812 overture is the greatest piece of music ever composed.

The finale to his fourth symphony is close behind.
I listen to classical music on the radio while I'm driving. I couldn't name a modern artist to save my life.
figlesquidge (2131 D)
05 Jun 10 UTC
@Zaza - that could be awkward.
I must admit I can't drive or work with classical music on - I tend to focus too heavily on analysing the structure and musical techniques adopted.

Not an expert, but I haven't heard a bad piece of chamber music yet.

One of the aims of this thread (since it seems to have some interest, yay!) is to allow people to suggest pieces of music or composers to each other. So... does anybody have any particular piece that they would like to share?
figlesquidge (2131 D)

Elgar's 'cello Concert in E Minor!
Bach's 'cello Concerto in A Major: Allegro Assai
Robert Prizeman's Voca Me

I listen to classical, but none of that modern crap. Good classical music died in Vienna in 1791 (with a few limited exceptions). Vivaldi is my favorite composer, and my favorite piece of all time is "Nulla in Mundo Pax Sincera" - you can get it from Amazon for $.99:

I never listen to classical by itself, but I LOVE opera!

Does that count?

I just can't listen to something for too long without that human component, the voice...

Puccini (my favorite), Mozart (my friend is a Mozart FIEND, she loves him so much, fi she COULD marry him...), Tchaikovsky, Verdi, Gilbert and Sullivan- that's what I like.

And The Beatles (but they're not classical, are they?) ;)

Perpetuum Mobile by Penguin Cafe Orchestra is good stuff.

The purists will hang me for suggesting it's classical, but it fits into my notion of classical music.

Tchaicovsky and Dvorak would probably be my favorites. I'll take some Vivaldi, too. And Pink Floyd....and the Beatles...and Van Halen NOT Haggar...

Stravinsky's Rite of Spring and Firebird; Maurice Ravel's orchestration of Pictures at an Exhibition; if we happen to be calling contemporary orchestral/chamber pieces "classical" (which they're technically not), then I must say George Crumb's Black Angels and many of John Adam's pieces

For those who have said that they like Vivaldi, I suggest they check out his 'folia'. It's based off a progression established by Lully. Here's a link:

Mozart's Don Giovanni, Die Zauberflot, Le Nozze DiFigaro, and Mass Requiem. In fact pretty much everything W.A. Mozart wrote (although I've long grown tired of Eine Kleine Nachtmusik).

Vivaldi's Four Seasons, Ravel's Bolero, Barber's Adagio, Copland's Fanfare for the Common Man, Rodeo, and Appalachian Spring, Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue and An American in Paris, and Bernstein's West Side Story Dances.

Define 'classical'...

A much abused word.

I do listen to a lot of older music, orchestra based. I detest opera though with a venom only equalled by my loathing of Rap/Hip Hop.

I do not like Chamber Music - I find it somewhat empty.

Favourite pieces? Too many to list really but I can say that I go with orchestras and conductors as much as I do with composers: my pet hate being conductors who decide that things should be played a lot faster and leave what could have been a majestic experience totally disappointing.

I have two recordings of the Enigma Variations (Elgar). In one, Nimrod lasts 6 minutes 8 seconds, in the other it runs out after 3'28... Heaven and Hell.

Bach: Mass in B Minor, the Bradenburg concertos (concerti? Whatever) and anything played by Glenn Goul;. Mozart - the overture to The Marriage of Figaro; Vivaldi - concertos for mandolin; Chopin - the "raindrop" prelude; Copland - Quiet City; yadayada...

Can't say I'm too much of a classical music buff, but I've acquired a small taste for it while learning to play piano.

That said, I'm a sucker for a little opera every now and then (which I, as a young 20-something, seldom admit). Wagner's complete Ring Cycle, is my absolute favorite.
Tolstoy (1962 D)
05 Jun 10 UTC
J/K. Yes, I suppose John Williams counts, although he goes under my general rule that post-1791 classical music sucks. I will admit that the Imperial March is a very catchy tune, however, and probably the single most recognizable piece of music of the 20th century.

That would be Glenn Gould not Glenn Goul...

For Tchaikovsky, I prefer Marche Slav but 1812 is great on patriotic holidays. I forgot to mention the Concerto Aranjuez by Jobim.

Any one here like Ives? Oh and I forgot Copland's Quiet City. I played that at UC's Conservatory some 26 years ago. Awesome piece.

This Week On "Philosophy Weekly": Epicurus' Riddle
I came to this line of thought and asked a whole bunch of people for their answers and felt totally original... then I realized Epicurus beat me to this dilemma by over 2,000 years. ;) Great mind, Epicurus, and a great riddle: Is God willing to prevent evil, but not able? Then he is not omnipotent.
Is he able, but not willing? Then he is malevolent. Is he both able and willing? Then whence cometh evil? Is he neither able nor willing? Then why call him God? -Epicurus

When does a diplomacy game end?
If a country is able to reach 18 SCs during the Autumn diplomacy stage, but then could lose 1 or more SCs during the Autumn retreats phase, is the game supposed to immediately end and ignore the retreat phase?

Does anyone else find being able to buy into a CD country...
...to be the single most obnoxious thing to happen to a Diplomacy game? Case in point, I was Russia in a live gunboat game. England missed the start time and went CD. I'm in the middle of a war with Germany over Scandinavia when someone else takes England, convoys into Norway, and helps Germany. Austria and Turkey see what's going on and ally against me, leading to my quick demise.

Why should we Diplomacy players have to fear idle countries randomly waking up and attacking?
