Tick, exclamation mark, dash next to players names - what does the dash mean?
I am in the builds phase of a game and each of the players has either a tick or an exclamation mark (exclamation point for North Americans) next to their names, except for one player who has a dash next to his. What does the dash mean?

This is an old Avalon Hill game (they were most famous for their WWII board games) and there seems to be interest in wars on this site. Anyone play war board games, old or new?

Using profile like Hellalt
Its much easier to just have a look at Hellalts profile than me trying to explain it, but i really like what he has done with it. Does anyone else do anything similar? This will save me time looking :)

I, too, agree with figle. Hellalts profile is a little self involved. Although it used to be worse.
Draugnar (0 DX)

Um, he has TMG on that list. I'm not sure I like being on it too.
ottovanbis (150 DX)

the idea of a profile in essence carries a flavor of ego that's too much, but such is the human condition
Draugnar (0 DX)
23 Dec 09 UTC
It could be argued that maintaining a black list (as some here do) or a white list (like hellalt's) is metagaming. You are allowing previous games to influence your decision as to who to ally with or even play with. The latter is fine as it just prevents a game from happening and doesn't alter an existing game, but the former is a bit negative in that you are deciding in advance who you are willing to ally with.
hellalt (70 D)
23 Dec 09 UTC
Well Draugnar that list is always on your mind even if you don't write it down.
I'm not writing it to remember it. I m doing it to notify other players what players I recommend.
I can't forget the game with BigZombieDude for example. He's a guy you can easily communicate and cooperate with. Or TheMasterGamer is the only person so far I bowed before his tactical excellence.
That doesn't automatically mean that if I meet one of them in another game I will automatically ally with them. But I will sure think about it and if it works for me I might try it (for example if I'm Italy and one of those guys is Austria that's good reason to reconsider a first year attack on Austria, especially if I suspect a Juggernaut. But if Germany proposes a first year blitz attack against Austria I might take part in it)

Also, I don't see why you and rdrivera2005 are feeling offended by being included in my list.
If you want it I can delete you from it.
Unless you are kidding of course.
Draugnar (0 DX)
23 Dec 09 UTC
I'm not offended (well sort of, considering it equates me with that idiot The_Master_Warrior). I was just having fun when I saw my name and TMW's on the same list.
Draugnar (0 DX)
23 Dec 09 UTC
Oh, and I wasn't implying anything real with the meta thing. We all remember the past and keep it in our heads. I have certain players that I am always wary of if I know I'm allied with them and I've learned when they stab. But I also know I've pissed off a few who might just hunt me down for being in the game. One of the reasons I strictly play anonymous games now.
Draugnar (0 DX)
23 Dec 09 UTC
I must ask how TMW was so brilliant? He has an opening named after his former life (Diplofool) that involves total stupidity as Germany that involved bouncing himself in an uncontested territory. He is the butt of amnay a staregy and tactics joke around here. What could he have possibly done that was so brilliant?
hellalt (70 D)
23 Dec 09 UTC
Not TheMasterWarrior but TheMasterGamer dude!
He's no.1 or 2 in this site!
I haven't played with TheMasterWarrior yet..
Draugnar (0 DX)
23 Dec 09 UTC
Whew! I misread that. OK, I feel much better now.
BigZombieDude (1188 D)
23 Dec 09 UTC
Oh Draug....you are so quick to jump :)

I think the use of the Profile us underrated. Self involved or not it gives a great insight into those players that you are playing with/ against. Yeah, you can write what you like but with things like the Ghost Ratings, it just saved me time going through the list and finding it myself.

Its not for everyone but im always interested in where players are from, who they have played before, their style, their stabs and a decent quote to brighten the day up.

beyond the countries i win with and my GR, I will not post any other information about my gaming strategy. makes it too easy for people to figure me out. diplomacy is about cynicism, if you want to be a dedicated opponent and study me, go ahead, i won't make it easy for you though.
Draugnar (0 DX)
23 Dec 09 UTC
@otto - do what I do and only play anonymous games. then they have to figure out who you are before they can begin to analyze your style of play from previous games.
ottovanbis (150 DX)
23 Dec 09 UTC
good idea
rdrivera2005 (3533 D(G))

@hellalt - I was kidding, maybe a bad joke as you don´t understand, lol. And we have played very well together to be honest.
figlesquidge (2131 D)
23 Dec 09 UTC
Wow, do you really do that much research BZD?
I just turn up and play (well, if I play!). To be honest, seems to me that as you go up the standards you find people are harder to predict anyway, so looking at their history doesn't help.

The real key to learning a person isn't in studying their moves, but their personalities. The same is true with poker. Any decent poker player will mix up their style, but if you play them enought imes you get a feel for what puts them on tilt and what might trigger lazier play and you play into that aspect.

If I know someone can be baited to attack in a certain way and I want them to throw everything they've got at me while my ally guts them from behind, I use that info to get them after me. For isntance, I know how to get hellalt on tilt. I just comment on things that I'm not involved in and point out every flaw for every possible plan I can foresee him using. He then goes off on me, gets frustrated, and does stupid moves that don't match the ones I said he would try just to prove me wrong, which gives my allies an advantage if they are facing him.

Nope. I like them too. My motto is:

Woman knocks Pope down at Christmas Mass

Apparently a mentally unstable woman has hit the physically unstable pontiff... sorry.
It seems to me rather odd that she was able to get close enough to him to hit him.
