Tick, exclamation mark, dash next to players names - what does the dash mean?
I am in the builds phase of a game and each of the players has either a tick or an exclamation mark (exclamation point for North Americans) next to their names, except for one player who has a dash next to his. What does the dash mean?

Old War Games
This is an old Avalon Hill game (they were most famous for their WWII board games) and there seems to be interest in wars on this site. Anyone play war board games, old or new?
Some that I play are Europe Engulfed, Victory in the Pacific, War at Sea, Blitzkrieg General, Luftwaffe, Asia Engulfed, Paths of Glory, Battle Cry, Third Reich, Guadalcanal, Midway and occassionally Axis and Allies (and its variants) if I feel like something easy.
If anyone else plays one of those we could get an internet game going.
Onar (131 D)

I play Axis, battlecry(only once, though), conquest of the empire, History of the world, and a few others.

Feudal (chess like game with hidden deployment and more than just two players, no dice or randomness involved), Panzer Blitz, Panzer Leader, A&A, and Advanced Squad Leader.

Feudal sounds interesting. Is it similar to Dip?

I have Axis & Allies (revised), Attack!, Attack! Expansion and Diplomacy. I am assuming Risk and Stratego don't count as wargames. Stratego is another game without chance.

At one time I used to play a lot of games published by old the SPI . I've not played any in recent years. Recently I've played TOAW which plays like the old board games, it saves a lot time and errors by doing all the calculations for you.

draug,
you're the first person I've met who knows about feudal!

A&A is the only other war game that I play on a semi-regular basis. I also play risk, which people like to knock, but I still think it's a fun game.

Feudal is more chesslike (pieces have certian moves) and there is no private diplomacy. In fact, there are two basic colors and you usual teamup by color, so no. think Risk without dice rolling and with chess moves.

@ JECE Simulations Publications Inc. , The Operational Art of War. Both can be found online, or on Wikipedia by there acronyms. SPI went under in 1982 but had a profound inpact on war gaming. Games ranged from small hour long games to monster games that need 4'x8' tables just for the maps and more tables where required for the charts used to play the game. The largest was of the Russian frount from the Artic Ocean to Turkey and Berlin east of Moscow.

TOAW is a board game like computer war game. Having the computer doing all the calcultions speeds up the game alot, and lets you concentrate on the your tactics and strategy.

Axis and Allies: Europe - Repetitive after a few years, increase German income to make more enjoyable.
Axis and Allies: Battle of the Bulge - Not played enough to rate, but very fun, an interesting spin on the combat style.
Axis and Allies: 50th Anniversary edition - Amazing game, I'd give it 11/10 if I could.
Axis and Allies: Revised - a good try, but no.
Axis and Allies: Guadalcanal - I'll tell you after my dad and I go at it a few times tomorrow!

@abgemacht - have you found any where to play it online? I love Feudal. Best pure strategy wargame with no randomness (i.e. no dice to resolve conflicts) I've ever played.

Has anyone here played any minitaures? I used to play some in our ConSim club 25+ years ago in high school and I've seen the new A&A miniatures. I was just wondering if anyone has played them or not. If so, how does the A&A minis stack up to old school painted miniatures as far as gameplay goes?

Dabbled with WWII tanks and ancients. My brother had quiet a few Russian tanks. Alot of lead.
@ Onar - History of the world is a good one to play online

@ airborne - Third Reich (the original) is my dad's favorite wargame of all time. Are you anywhere near San Diego CA?

@ Draugnar - I have squad leader too, but I've forgotten all but the basic rules.

Don't get me wrong, Axis and Allies is fun but I don't necessarily put it on the same level as the other ones. It comes down mainly to luck of the rolls and maybe some key battles and it's not exactly complex; I first played it when I was six and beat my dad the second or third time we played. The variants (Pacific especially) require more strategy but any wargame without rules regarding logistics is a little too simplistic. Nevertheless we could get a group together and do A&A online.

Can The Operational Art of War be found free on-line?
warsprite (152 D)
25 Dec 09 UTC
No. It's a complete game system that includes scores of scenarios, with a good AI, or can be played by 2 via hotseat or e-mail. With some scenarios turns can take an hour or more per player. This was not intended as live online game system. This a good grognard game system. That is a lover of the old board war games that reached their peak in the 70s, but with the computer keeping track of all the factors such weather, unit types, supply, etc. You can down load a copy at Matrix games for about $30.
An hour per player isn't all that long. My dad'll take half an hour for one action phase of Paths of Glory, and there are six action phases per player per turn plus supply, builds etc added on. That and each turn represents one quarter of a year for all the years of WW1. 20 turns in all. You'd think I'd have something more productive to do with my time.

The third edition in 06 TOAW3. I've not seen any free down loads from the early editions.

@LJ I guess not for one who is used such games. I've not tried their "Fire in the East" scenario. They warned that the computer itself can take that long or more per turn.

Ah, I just assumed you weren't talking about the third one because it was released by a different publisher and GameRankings gives the third game a 65.00% compared to the first and second, which got 84.10% and 84.91%, respectively. But anyway, how does this game compare in complexity to Europa Universalis III: In Nomine?
@Draugnar

I had totally forgotten about Feudal. That was a fun, basic game.

King Maker was a lot of fun too. Very much luck dependant though. I liked the idea of garnering support from nobles and mercenaries.

Stellar Conquest was good, albeit a bit confusing what with keeping up with populations on colonial planets.

Titan was probably my favorite. Let me see how can I recruit the biggest monsters to go out an beat your monsters up with?

The first ed was up to the 60s the 2nd picked up from there. Norm Koger and Co where still involvedand and combined the first 2. The most negative about the 3rd is they could have done more and the entrow video has been buggy and locking up. Sometimes a later edition can drop in rating more from disappointment than anything else. TOAW is operational level, so units are mostly battalion up to divisional, and turn based, that makes it hard to compare. But I'd say TOAW is more so because you need to watch things like supply, fatigue, etc. Even though the computer tracks it for you, the results affect movement and attack and defence. Also note that each unit has a set of numbers on it telling you it's current combat and movement values. They also use standard NATO symbols for different types of units. armour, rocket, machine gun, mortor, infantry, etc.

Apparently a mentally unstable woman has hit the physically unstable pontiff... sorry.
It seems to me rather odd that she was able to get close enough to him to hit him.
