I think it's ignorance to believe nationalism could be a good thing. perhaps is some very specific instances but not overall

I'm not in favor of strong nationalism in a National Socialist sense but I do think that national awareness is useful and enhances the cultural life of a people. Felt in moderation, a sense of national identity can inspire people to respect certain aspects of some other nation. In this case, I think that the "Other" is actually quite good. It's a very sticky subject but I do think it would be a shame if we all chose to ignore and eventually forget our nations and, probably, the cultural quirks that go along with them.

national structures are superior to feudal arrangements, which national structures replaced, and are prelude to truly global structures. the idea is that while attachment to where you are born and live is excellent, political attachment should not be limited to your locality. larger structures of common framework is a desirable political goal culminating in the political community being largely global. its a process.

Nothing wrong with nationalism. Extreme nationalism (Nazi Germany, Imperial Japan, etc.) is another story.

I am a very strong nationalist, and I believe it to be extremely beneficial. and to respond to canute, it has greatly benefitted the victors in many occasions.

I definitely believe in loving one's country but people should not let a political party use that sense of nationalism to control people. Also, I would call Gavrillo Princip and the other members of the Black Hand you started the Great War anarchists rather than nationalists.

As with most things in society, it depends where you draw the lines. Nationalism is defined as devotion or loyalty to your own nation. I am British - I believe in the Union of the four Home Countries, loyalty to the Monarch and to my country. Yes, I'm probably an old Tory at heart, but does that mean that I am jingoistic? No, I don't believe so. Jingoism is extreme nationalism - it is often characterised by an overt foreign policy, for example.

As a student of history, it could be argued that jingoism was particularly prevalent in parts of the British Empire during the 19th Century, however, it must be taken into context. It was during a period of nationalism from other countries, notably Spain, Holland, France, Germany etc.

It depends on what the nationalism is based upon, some things are bad to be proud of. Personally I prefer to put my patriotism in all countries that aren't being dicks to put it short.

I forgot to say that I care about people over countries, but I understand that in times of hardship, the homeland comes first.

Well, on nationalism, I feel that while it's a step up from feudalism, it is certainly still irrational and anachronistic currently. I haven't decided yet if globalization is a positive, but I'm leaning towards that. But... nationalism is definitely deeply ingrained in our history and culture, and no doubt that even if a state of global government were to be put in place, there would still be large pockets of people divided solely by their nationalistic sentiments, the same way we have with religious divisions.

I would also say that nationalism was not nearly the only cause of WWI. I put forth European imperialism and militarism preceding the war.

I find that nationalism simply devides people, it may help in times of war for the population to be patriotic, united in hate of the enemy, but is that really neccesary? Well I guess I'm just saying that nationalism causes problems when you mix it with multiculturalism and bilingualism. Some people need to realize that just because your ancestors got screwed over by the other guy's ancestors, doesn't mean you can't be friends.

To say that Princip started WWI is silly, WWI was not started by Princip, rather, ambitious and overconfident German and Austrian military leaders used Princip's action to try and attain what they had already decided they wanted.

As for nationalism, it is, like all political ideologies and things human, malleable and easily used by those with malicious intent. The same can be said of any movement.

I think nationalism is fine, though a more productive sentiment is nationalism for the entirety of the species. This can be achieved most simply by one nation taking control of the entire world, i.e. one-world government.

im of the view that nationalism is little better than tribalism and the sooner we evlove beyond primitive social structures the better.
as an australian i feel loyalty to my family, friends, then to a general sense that a "democratic" countireS deserve my loalty more than autocratic ones.
