Okie dokes, that was a promising start :). The tournament game seemed to go beautifully, and a host of other live games fired up around it.
A question about game two. I noticed a few people leaving it throughout the day. Were those people those who had also signed up to game one deciding two games would be a bit much, or people concluding that it wasn't going to happen and leaving early?
Anyway... on to what didn't work.
There were two failings of the tournament last night. The first and most obvious being the lack of a second game. The second being the signing up for the first game. From my perspective the signing up period started two hours after I went to sleep and effectively finished two hours before I woke up. We have an amusing situation in which the time period the games are played in are designed to make it more attractive for Europeans, but the signing up timing makes it near impossible for Europeans to actually get in :p.
I agree that a staggered start is worthy of a trial run. It may not work, but it has to be worth a try. The first game could be made an hour or two earlier. The second an hour or two later.
Moving the start time of the first game an hour later is a non starter for me. It's just too late in the day, and would force me to withdraw.
" If those of you that don't make game 1 next time would like to make game 2 public, we can definitely do that. I just can't score it in the tournament if we do."
Why not? Why not open the tournament games to none tournament players if it will help get them started? Publish the password an hour before kickoff on the forum, let people know it's tournament standard and any leaving early will be punished, but that if a high quality live game is wanted that they are welcome.
It is not an ideal solution, I admit, but it is a vast improvement over the alternative surely?
