Who would play a live game tonight?
I've come to realize that I don't have the patience for non-live games much. I need a minimum of 2 days/phase to have the free time to conduct diplomacy appropriately well, and that ends up being too long a game for me to maintain interest. However a live game (being no more than a 3-4 hr chunk of time) is pretty manageable. So I wanna play one.

Who's in?

I'm a Godfather!
I just became a Godfather and I'm wicked excited! With Christmas and his baptism coming up, I want to start thinking about things to do now and in the future. Obviously, it will largely depend on what the parents want, but I was hoping some people could share their thoughts on being a Godparent.
Thanks!

The Greatest People in History Tournament--Nominations
We've done Literature, we've done Music...so, since we're a history-happy lot, why not tackle the (impossible but fun) task of asking "Who was the better general, Alexander or Genghis Khan?" (Though bobgenghiskhan is clearly the answer.) 4 categories: Military/Political Leaders, Artists, Inventors/Scientists, and a "Grab-Bag" category, for all the folks who don't fit in elsewhere. Nominate 1 for each category, and we'll start when we have 64 (or 128, either way.)

The Etiquette of Copying and Pasting Private Press

I am interested in hearing the community's thoughts on whether or not it is acceptable to copy and paste private press sent to you by one player to another player. I mean, it is certainly not against the rules, but it seems to provide a level of certainty regarding information that is not typically present in the face-to-face game.

In F2F, you typically cannot provide 100% proof that what you are telling someone regarding what someone else told you is accurate information, unless you were somehow recording the conversation. So, is the ability to copy and paste press simply a necessary aberration dictated by the realities of online play? Does it significantly change the way the game is played in terms of what kinds of things you might say to other players?
phil_a_s (0 DX)
11 Dec 14 UTC
You can lie while quoting. It's super easy to do.

All you do is change a couple words while copypasting. As such, it is no more reliable than the person sending it is, and thus is as reliable as information transfer is in F2F games.
Sulram (100 D)

In that case, what about screenshots?
bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))

Don't use screenshots. They come into question as fake very easily, at which point the mods are forced to intervene and try to determine its authenticity, which wastes everyone's time. If you are in so deep with someone that you have to screenshot another player's press in order to get them to believe you, you really need to improve your press play and need all the practice you can get anyway.
bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))

To clarify, per rule #4:

"Lying is fine in Diplomacy except when it gives mods/admins unnecessary work to do"
Chaqa (3971 D(B))

If there's not a rule against it, it's perfectly legal Diplomacy tactics.

Acting like a noob? Crying? Lying? Deceit?

Anything to win.
Sulram (100 D)

But I'm unclear why a screenshot would necessarily need to have its authenticity determined by mods. Why is that a matter that they would need to deal with?
Is it illegal to doctor screenshots?
phil_a_s (0 DX)
11 Dec 14 UTC
If you make a screenshot and send it, you're probably going to way too much effort to subvert one of the most fun parts of Diplomacy, which is unreliable transfer of information. No-one does it as far as I can tell, because no-one wants it to be a thing that is done.
Sulram (100 D)
11 Dec 14 UTC
Right, it was more of a theoretical question than a practical one. I don't intend to use them and wouldn't really want someone to use them, for the reasons you put forward. It seems integral to this game that there never be 100% certainty about the truth or falseness of someone's claims.
Your Humble Narrator (1922 D)

I think it would be fine, so long as there was a thriving culture of doctoring screenshots to go with it, preserving uncertainty.
Chaqa (3971 D(B))
11 Dec 14 UTC
To me doctoring a screenshot is no different from showing fake orders in a F2F game.

Back in an old game in high school one of my buddies wrote fake orders on one side of the paper, real ones on the other. Someone asked to see orders, he showed the fake, stabbed him with the real ones.
bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))
11 Dec 14 UTC
@YHN ... it is fine until the mods get called in. Once the mods are asked to check on a faked screenshot, it is a violation of rule #4, which I quoted above. We had that debate a number of times.
phil_a_s (0 DX)
11 Dec 14 UTC
Anyway, I wouldn't trust someone so keen to get me to trust him that he would be willing to send a screenshot, doctored or not, so I'd just move against them either way. Once someone spends enough time getting you to trust them you begin to expect an ulterior motive.
Chaqa (3971 D(B))
11 Dec 14 UTC
So then, if I want someone in trouble, I should just say that he lied to me? Since that now wastes mod time he has broken the rules.
bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))
11 Dec 14 UTC

Chaqa, we're both well aware that you like to needlessly nitpick at the rules, so I'm just going to ask that you stop before you start.
You can't lie while quoting. It's super hard to do.

You don't change words while copypasting. As such, it is more reliable than the person sending it is, and thus is more reliable than information transfer is in F2F games.
Chaqa (3971 D(B))
11 Dec 14 UTC
My point is that it's not the mod's job to analyze a screenshot for validity.

It's a perfectly legitimate strategy (regardless of effectiveness) and if the mods get an email saying "someone sent me a doctored screenshot!" the answer should be "Not our problem", not an investigation. Therefore, there can be no time wasting, therefore, no rule is broken.
bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))
11 Dec 14 UTC
As far as I know, they typically won't. I never oversaw anything like that. However, if they choose to, you open yourself up to trouble, and if anyone ever sent me a screenshot of press, I would ask them to convince me of its authenticity themselves through traditional press means rather than trust it.
Chaqa (3971 D(B))
11 Dec 14 UTC
So you're saying screenshots shouldn't be allowed because the mods *might* decide it was a waste of their time to investigate?
ag7433 (927 D(S))
11 Dec 14 UTC
I've played in a game with a mod request a screenshot from me. It's all depending on the situation I guess.

As for etiquette, do what you need, but you being an implosion-target from an opposing player will increase exponentially.

@ bosox
Sorry, but you are adopting an untenable position. Player #1 lies to player #2. Player #2 demands evidence. Player #1 fakes it. Player #2 complains to admin. Player #2 is wasting admin time, not player #1.
bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))
11 Dec 14 UTC
@Chaqa ... I am saying that you should not have to use them and shouldn't trust them, regardless of the rules. I rarely defend on quotes from other players either.

@thomas dullan ... If someone fakes a screenshot and it gets reported, it's not the person who reported it that is at fault, it's the player that faked the screenshot. If the screenshot is real, then whoever saw that case would ideally be kind and understanding as the mods always have been and always are and simply verify its authenticity or simply say that there is no way to determine its authenticity (which may be true; like I said, I never oversaw one of those cases). Unless the report is clearly fraudulent (i.e. someone reporting a bug that doesn't exist), that's not considered a violation.
Jeff Kuta (2066 D)
11 Dec 14 UTC
The screenshot spoofer isn't wasting admin time. That person never contacted the admins.

The person who reported the spoofer is wasting admin time. Admins shouldn't have to do police work for gullible victims.

That's totally different from one player making false multi-player or software bug accusations to justify their behavior.
bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))
11 Dec 14 UTC
That's why I say that most of these cases likely get ignored. Hence, don't trust screenshots. My whole point. Read.
Chaqa (3971 D(B))
11 Dec 14 UTC
You just said "If someone fakes a screenshot and it gets reported, it's not the person who reported it that is at fault, it's the player that faked the screenshot."

You're flip flopping.
Jeff Kuta (2066 D)
11 Dec 14 UTC
Use your words better, bo. Write.

"Fault" implies that there was wrongdoing in this context, not just that there was action.
bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))
11 Dec 14 UTC
Correct, the victim (or whatever you call this - the subject of the faked screenshot) is not at fault. It is within their right to report it if they find it suspicious or have reason to believe that it's faked. The player who faked the screenshot would be at fault if it was found that they did in fact fake the screenshot. However, most cases of this nature are ignored because, as I have been saying, they are a waste of time, and I personally don't know how to verify authenticity of a screenshot, nor did I ever learn how to, and I was never asked to at all. As such, I simply advise against trusting screenshots (or direct quotations) and push players to pressure their opponents into speaking with their own words and convincing you themselves.
bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))
11 Dec 14 UTC
'"Fault' implies that there was wrongdoing in this context, not just that there was action."

If someone fakes a screenshot and it gets reported, the player that faked the screenshot is at fault. If the screenshot is authentic, no one is at fault unless a mod is having a really, really bad day, and if for whatever reason someone were to get punished for submitting a reasonable concern, I imagine it would be reversed almost instantly upon appeal.
Chaqa (3971 D(B))
11 Dec 14 UTC
I think the point here is that regardless of screenshot authenticity, there is no fault. There is no rule against faking screenshots, hence no fault.

It'd be like if I reported someone for possibly being a multi, and they weren't. Is that person at fault? They didn't break any rule (not the best example since multi is against rules, but you get the gist)

Not classic Diplomacy
So I'm new, and just finding my way here. But I've been playing Diplomacy for almost 40 years (anyone else here?)! the interesting thing about the greatest game ever invented by a mailman, is that the main object isn't really stabbing someone, but learning to work together. and being trustworthy. Unfortunately, that's not a version this site espouses! Too bad, but i find the site enjoyable anyway.
