The Greatest Musical Act Tournament: Broup A: 1600s-1960
And so we begin The Greatest Musical Act Tournament with Group A...or, as every group will be called here, "The Group of Death" (as the World Cup has taught me that's the only name to give to any group ever.) :p How will the Great Composers fare? Which immortal band or act will bring about the most outrage? Who will Team Vergil pull for THIS time...while Shakespeare sulks in the corner, STILL wondering how he lost...TWICE. :p Here we go!

Aaaaaaaaaand right off the bat--typo! :D

*GROUP A is as follows:

1. Gershwin
2. Frank Sinatra
3. Sam Cooke
4. Elvis Presley
5. Liszt
6. Chopin
7. Puccini
8. Robert Johnson
9. Edith Piaf
10. Etta James
11. Cole Porter
12. Charles Mingus
13. Maurice Andre
14. Vivaldi
15. James Brown
16. Hank Williams
17. Woody Guthrie
18. Mahler
19. Louis Armstrong
20. Pete Seeger
21. Brahms
22. Thelonious Monk
23. Beethoven
24. Miles Davis
25. BB King
26. Tchaikovsky
27. Bach
28. Mozart
29. Johnny Cash
30. Schumann
31. Billie Holiday
32. Buddy Holly

Same rules as last time, roughly a 24-hour phase for each voting session, roughly ending at 12:00 PST (because I live on the Pacific Coast and I'm the typo-happy madman posting this nonsense, damn it!)

So, that means, we begin today with--

George Gershwin vs. Buddy Holly.

And as I nominated the man, no question for me...Holly's nice, but...

Gershwin all the way!

The links I'll post to Gershwin's music:

Rhapsody in Blue (one of his most famous works): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ynEOo28lsbc

An American in Pairs: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KU1X3Wut-k0

And for a bit of sung music by him, "Summertime," sung here by Ella Fitzgerald: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MIDOEsQL7lA

Gershwin: 1
Holly: 0

Of course you're allowed to play. The winner receives immortal fame.

They already have fame, but it's immortal fame once you're webdip's favorite musician.

Paul McCartney is giving a concert in Holly's hometown of Lubbock, Texas in honor of Buddy.

Holly.

Holly - 6
Gershwin - 5

Should we start another era simultaneously. 64 matches at 24hrs per match means the first round will um... let me figure it out... 60 odd days.

Expedition is for wusses! The eyes of history are upon us, we need to take our time of roughly until December to select the greatest musical act of all times. Maybe we can buy some of his or her records in time for Christmas.

Hmm... After sampling both artists, I believe I can give a summary of my (non-expert) opinon of each.

Gershiwn: Elegant, loud, and powerful. He has a good flow from point to point, and clearly it was difficult to pump out 16 minutes of sheet music a song. However, like any artist, his works become repetitive, this is not helped my the lack of lyrics (though to be fair, lyrics t=would ruin it). Overall, a very good artist who deserves to be on the list.

Holly: His music, makes me want to dance. It infiltrates me and infects me with an amazingly...swing-y? feeling. Not to mention he died young (like many good artists), and has numerous songs devoted to him. I do indeed like his music more than Gershiwn's and combined with his influence on later rock and roll.....the choice is simply.

My vote goes to Buddy Holly.

Need a Substitute Player
One player in a game has gone MIA and the balance is completely thrown off without him playing. If anybody wants to take over England in this game: http://webdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=147466&msgCountryID=0 then please let me know so I can get the admin to swap you in. It is a 7 day phase game with a cheap buy in so there isn't a huge commitment but it would help the game and England is not in a bad spot anyway.

Webdiplomacy Tournament
We have nearly filled all 3 boards with official players. I currently have two players on stand-by incase we can't fill the boards. Hellenic Riot has agreed to join if we get to 20 which is just 2 players away. Surely we have 2 players that would like to donate $10 and join this unprecedented online tournament format!

OK, we're playing a gunboat right now and there's been a crystal clear stalemate for two whole years, but the 17-center guy won't accept the draw. What to do? We can't play all night.

Welcome Back, NHL Hockey! Who Makes the Playoffs, and Who Hoists the Cup?
The Good Old Hockey Game is back again! :) The (grrr) defending Stanley Cup Champion Kings look amazing...my beloved Anaheim Ducks upgraded, and look to make another run, as the Blackhawks, Blues, Avs and Wild are all on the rise in the Wild Wild West. The Bruins and Canadiens still look great, the Rangers look to rebound, the Pens and Caps look to rebound as well...who makes the playoffs, and come June, which Captain gets to hoist Lord Stanley's Cup? :D

Call Out for Fill-Ins
Alright, while there's still time to sign up, today is the last day, and I get the impression that who we have is going to be "it". This is a call to those in the forum that want to play in the tournament but don't want the buy-in. This is a low-committment committing to only the round which you sign up for. We need 5 players that want to start this round to fill boards. I will take the 5 players with the highest reliability ratings.

NFL Pick 'em Week 6: Who's For Real?
Week 6 has already seen Andrew Luck and the Colts pop the Texans' bubble...it also features a match-up between the surprising Bills and the surprisingly-inconsistent Patriots. The Cowboys roll into Seattle red-hot to take on the Seahawks in their house of pain. The Panthers and Bengals square off to see who's for real and who's in trouble, and the same goes for the Bears/Falcons and Giants/Eagles game. Week 6...Pick 'em!
