BNP Paribas extorted by US government for $9 billion fine
I'm surprised nobody has mentioned this.

US crushed French bank even though it violated no international, or bilateral law, simply because trade is done in dollars. This is abuse of power and signifies that the US no longer upholds a free trade system. It will use the fact that trade is done in dollars to destroy people even if they broke no law.

Essay writing tips
We had fiction, so non-fiction now. Sometimes I really struggle to maintain structure for 10-15,000 words and ramble off in another direction. How do you write a clear concise essay?

Maybe I'm being over sensitive...
But there seems to be a fair bit of misogyny in some posts. All in jest, but still, some posts that are misogynistic in nature. I'm curious as to whether there would be so many if there were more women on the site.

Indeed. That's clear from the fact that homophobia is far less virulent, due to the prevalence of LGBTQ members here. But misogyny is acceptable.

I've been muting much of the recent threads where the whole point is misogyny. We need to stop being such Howard Wolowitzes.

SD - I think it's also pretty clear that there would be more women on the site if there was less open misogyny.
I daresay you're right mendax.

Maybe, given the sites new moderation policies, it is something to consider clamping down on.
Draugnar (0 DX)

While I am all for self moderation and we as a group being more respectful, I must speak out against PC enforcement in any form.

"While I am all for self moderation and we as a group being more respectful, I must speak out against PC enforcement in any form."

I think when Marx spoke of dialectics he had you in mind.
I think that there should be no moderation, but I think if the site has moderation it would be better served for rampant offputing misogyny than calling someone a stupid cocksucker or something of that ilk.
Do they have to be mutually exclusive? Can't one be rampantly misogynistic in an offputting manner, and call someone a stupid cocksucker at the same time?
Ogion (3882 D)

There certainly is. However, it seems Kestas is keen to not have women here, since the absence of moderation (not to mention the fact that a moderator is among the worst) seems to endorse the lowest denominator here. If there were an interest in changing it, that could be done, but it would require someone who takes the issue seriously.
no THM, they are not mutually exclusive, thanks for the contribution.

I do really think it is something to change about the website, and I think that surely enough of us here are interested in changing this aspect of the site for the better? I love this site, but it is one of the things that I really dislike here.

Why don't you call it out when you see it, SD? I don't think that putting a general thread like this here is very helpful.
Semck, I think I shall do from now on, or at least try to. I do disagree that a thread like this isn't helpful though - it gives you an idea of how the rest of the forum feels about the issue. The fact that my post got plus 1's instead of ridicule was a pleasant surprise for me, and was enlightening. With group feedback and conversation we can also thing how best to tackle it. Not sure why you think a general thread isn't helpful/potentially helpful.

I'd just like to apologize to everyone for posting in the particularly egregious "How to play..." thread. I felt like an asshole when I posted, and the other comments are only making that worse.

Just because we're all too lame for more women to grace this shithole of a forum with their presence doesn't mean anyone here should feel acceptable acting that way.

Women probably don't come here because it's a website based on a board game. Not exactly their bailiwick.
krellin (80 DX)

Yes, there would.

And....here's a hint, my friend....hang out with women, and (GASP! Say it isn't so!!) Women like to mock men, make fun of them, cut them down, belittle them, etc...

And if you are confident with yourself, you realize it's human nature and don't get your panties in a bunch.

I'd love to see some women here slinging some shit at the men - that would be awesome/hillarious/etc....mostly because they are so bad at it compared to the genetically-enhanced rapier wit of your average men....which....sadly....leaves most of you out of it...

Socrates - by the way, on a more personal level - I'm certain your over-sensitivity is just because it's your "time of the month". Check back with us in a week and I'm sure your be feeling manly and less sensitive again.

I fully contest the idea that we have no womyn around here. A good many of the whining Libtards around here have more estrogen than any five real women I know combined. It's like a regular sniveling bitch-fest around here sometimes, what with all you bunched-panty, "you hurt my f-f-f-f-f-f-feeeings", weak losers....

I've never understood people who argue about Freedom of Speech on a website. If the mods wish to enforce something, and kestas/zultar agree with them, then that's their prerogative and they have the right to enforce it however they want. The real question is whether it's a good thing for the site or not

While I'm in favour of a more toned down forum in general I can see this being unpopular, so compromises would have to be made for community harmony. However, going from userID's it seems to me like site growth has decreased significantly in the past few years, and ideally that would be reversed. So perhaps measures to make it a more welcoming place are a good plan.
Putin33 (111 D)

Krellie, do you call your wife a sniveling bitch? How about your daughters? Have you given birth?
Draugnar (0 DX)
15 Jul 14 UTC
@Hellenic - Correct. The site owners make that decision. But at least one (kestas) has been for open and free communication without moderation.
semck83 (229 D(B))
15 Jul 14 UTC
@HR,

And what's wrong with our sharing our opinions on what's best for the site?

As for slowdown in site growth -- at least some of that may well be due to saturation; early on, there was going to be fast growth due to the various people who already played diplomacy coming online and joining a site. We may be at the point now where only new dip players are seeking out a site.

Of course, maybe other sites are growing faster. Of that I can't say.

If you are trying to write an argumentative piece, it helps a lot to be concise. A long-winded piece that just says the same thing in ten different ways just leads readers astray.

Obiwan where are you?!
I just finished watching Joss Whedon's production of Much Ado About Nothing and wanted to learn if you had seen it and what your impression was if you had. I quite enjoyed it and felt it was, at the least, comparable to Branagh's version.
