We're not who we appear to be: something good, bad, or indifferent?
The anonymity that is inherent in message boards like this and the consequent increased boldness or recklessness with which most of us are apt to behave as compared to how we would behave in our "real" lives leads me to wonder out loud: at what point, if ever, does this presentation of a sort of alternate personality constitute lying? And if it is a form of lying, does it matter?

Hobby Lobby
The US Supreme Court has just (ten minutes ago) upheld Hobby Lobby's right, under religious conscience, not to provide contraception coverage to its employees.

What a joke. Corporations are people who practice religion, but only in the case of contraception, not with blood transfusions, etc?

This court has become the Council of Guardians. (My apologies to Iran for the comparison, the Council of Guardians probably exercises judicial restraint).
semck83 (229 D(B))
30 Jun 14 UTC
No, putin, it's not that corporations couldn't have religious beliefs about blood transfusion, it's just that the balancing test inherent in RFRA would swing the other way there. Hobby Lobby won because it (a) had religious beliefs and (b) accomodating them was easy -- there are plenty of other ways to provide contraception to those employees, and in any case, the government had already given an exception to non-profits, which pretty well destroyed any claim that this was vital to the nation.
Putin33 (111 D)

The non-profit exemption was for religious non-profits. The notion of corporations practicing religion is patently absurd.

More judicial activism from a hypocritical court.

Corporations owned by private individuals (not publicly held) are people. Period. Don't like it, go back to your beloved China where the state owns the corporations.

We've had this discussion before. A privately owned business has the right to refuse service to people not in a protected class and to have business practices that don't explicitly violate a constitutional amendment.

Discriminating against customers not in a protected class will result in them losing business generally speaking so it is stupid on their part, but they have the right nonetheless.

Refusing to pay for certain coverage's or requiring certain dress codes of a modest nature will result in them not having the much wider field to recruit from so again it will hurt them in the long run, but it is their right.
Putin33 (111 D)
30 Jun 14 UTC
(+3)
No it is not. The Supreme Court ruled in Employment Division v. Smith that the state could impose laws that burdened religious practice of companies if they had a legitimate public interest. In response Congress passed the RFRA raising the bar to "compelling interest". Nonetheless, there is no indication *whatsoever* that this law was meant to be applied to for-profit businesses. The religious right on the court simply read that in, like the judicial activists they are.

Hypocrites writing law from the bench.

I have no problem with this. A company should be allowed to provide (or not provide) whatever services, benefits, or product it wants, to customers or employees alike. Companies are not legally required to provide insurance, therefore they should not be required to provide unnecessary (as in not vital to your living) birth control that can be gotten relatively cheap elsewhere.

"provide unnecessary (as in not vital to your living) birth control that can be gotten relatively cheap elsewhere."

Ignorance. Birth control is often medically necessary for women, it's not just about preventing pregnancy.

Stupid men writing stupid policy from the bench.

They're not unconstitutional, they simply read crap into the law that doesn't exist. They're implementing policy from the bench, breaking with past precedent. You don't know what activism means because you're a partisan hack.

This case is a conservative sideshow. With the bad press about Obamacare drying up because people are realizing that it actually *helps* people, conservatives are forced to claim victory on legal technicalities that cling to the threads of corporate "personhood", which are the only people that conservatives really care about anyway.

Putin, what "basic fucking labor law" says companies have to provide birth control to women?

And what kind of medical reasons are there for birth control, beside to stop pregnancy? I'm not familiar with this, as I'm not a) a doctor or b) a woman, so pardon my "ignorance," if you would.
