Feature: Min/Max DipPoints for New Games
How about being able to create new games restricted to players joining based on their max or min amount of DipPoints?

Diplomacy questions
So, these are pretty basic questions, and I'm sure they've been asked before, so forgive me for asking them again.

I've always understood that the reasoning behind stopping when somebody gets to 18 centers is that they could force all 34 then. This motivates the following questions.

1) Is it true that somebody with 18 centers can always force a victory? Has anybody checked that every possible combination of 18 centers would lead to a forced victory? Is there an easy way to see/check this?

2) Is there ANY combination of *17* centers, and some credible distribution of the accompanying 17 units, such that NO distribution of 17 defensive units could prevent victory?

3) (Only if the answer to 2 is yes). What about 16? What's the smallest number of centers you can have and (in some configuration) have a forced victory? What's the largest number of centers you could have and not be able to force 34?

Please understand, you are speaking with someone who owns the original board game, has all the original pieces and the original instructions. Your presumption is that with 18 supply centres, you are unconquerable. I suggest that the presumption is false. I contend that the reason that one wins with 18 is because there has to be some measure of a win and having a majority of SCs is as good a measure any. Furthermore, having played past the 18 SC mark the old fashioned way, play simply becomes uninteresting for both the dominant power and for the remaining players.

It is not impossible to have secured 18 SCs in one given turn only to lose multiple SCs in future phases.

Cheers!

I'm fairly certain that it is possible to have 18 center and not force a complete victory. I think it would be most efficient to find the smallest stalemate spots and work from there. I'm doing some actual work today, so I won't have as much time, but if you are really interested, uclabb, The Hanged Man, or Split would be some very good people who can answer your question.
Tru Ninja (1016 D(S))

There's a stalemated line that divides the board into an 18-16 scenario, so yes, it is possible to have 18 centers and be stalemated from earning all 34.

England can block off a 32-center italy/austria/turkey with 4 fleets stationed at Portugal, MAO, NAO, and the Channel, as long as the 32-center nation has no fleets north of MAO.

There are defensible stalemate positions that require fewer than 17 supply centers. Because those are impossible to crack, simply requiring more than half the available ones to declare victory is sufficient.

Thank you -- good to know!

y2k, how could England have 4 fleets if Italy has 32 centers?

I can personally stop a 33 center guy who is taking sitting in the 34th center in the Spring with one unit with a jugular punch--it's much easier if the player is an old frail woman.
Yeah as already mentioned, England and Portugal locks up the Atlantic with 4 centers so 18 sc =\= victory
yebellz (729 D(G))

There are a lot of stalemate positions that hold less than 17 SCs
http://www.diplom.org/Online/StalematesAtoY/visual.htm

I think the purpose of ending at 18 SCs is not due to the assumption that one can always take the whole board, but rather the opposite in that taking the entire board is often not feasible.
Watch out, Tru. You're going to scare away prospective old frail woman web dip players.

We're not who we appear to be: something good, bad, or indifferent?
The anonymity that is inherent in message boards like this and the consequent increased boldness or recklessness with which most of us are apt to behave as compared to how we would behave in our "real" lives leads me to wonder out loud: at what point, if ever, does this presentation of a sort of alternate personality constitute lying? And if it is a form of lying, does it matter?
