Anything, really, from The Adventures of a Simpleton by Hans Jacob Christoffel von Grimmelshausen. - : Re: Draws
An early CD means draw - I have zero problem with that. But if someone quits because they realize early on (say 1905) that they aren't going to win, I'm not automatically for a draw. Especially if I've been busting my ass being diplomatic with the other five players to get a strong position, and even more so if the quitting player was the target of my attacks/intentions. If I've already set up the lines so that country is doomed, then it doesn't matter to me if there's anyone "behind the wheel" because to me they're already dead and out of the game. - : Re: 17 games, 17 players
With one game over, I thought it would be interesting to look at trends in all 17 games and see which countries are popping up in the top 3 the most. India, Western Canada, Russia, and Argentina are apparently strong countries for this group of players as each appears more than 5 times, but we really seem to excel with Kenya (10 of 17 games with a top spot). On a side note, we suck with Libya and Frozen Antarctica, which aren't currently winning any medals. - : Re: EOG: Around the World GB Tourney Game 5
Libya: Made solid progress in the early years, whittling away at my neighbors (especially Kenya). Ghana was not a concern, given Europes advances south, but my real problem was Frozen Antarctica not putting ANY pressure on South Africa and allowing him to advance north at will. By the end of 1903, I've got a wall of light blue coming at me from land and sea. My NMR was unfortunate, but my fate was decided long before.
Well played, South Africa. - : Re: 17 games, 17 players

@ Fortress - I agree with the unbalanced comment. I imagine it would normally look like this by Spring 1902:
* E/F are sending 10 units East (6 starting, plus Por, Spa, Bel, & Nor gains)
* R/T are sending 9 units West (7 starting, plus Rum & Bul gains)
* A/I/G have 14 units (9 startings, plus Den, Hol, Ser, Gre, & Tun) to split and defend against those 19.
Unless the Alps suddenly expand from Ruhr to GoL, A/I/G are in trouble. - : Re: And now for a truly original thread topic!

End result of SCs by country:
Germany - 42
Italy - 35
Turkey - 32
France - 24
Austria - 16
Russia - 16
England - 5
I don't know which is more impresisve: Game 1 Austria or Game 3 Russia. Both ended with 15 SCs. Only twice did Austria and Russia even survive, and both times the other survival had only a single SC. - : Re: **Web-Dip Inter-Galactic Championship**
Yeah, but that's because you have fists of fury. - : Re: **Web-Dip Inter-Galactic Championship**
I have a hunch the tournament is up for grabs here, so no one seems to be pulling any punches. It's like the end of Rocky II (or Rocky IV, since Russia is involved). - : Re: **Web-Dip Inter-Galactic Championship**

Well, I'm just glad those games are over. Game 4 was one of my worst performances as Turkey, and game 2 was officially my worst job as Italy. I lost game 5 by being greedy instead of smart - thought I had to make up for SCs lost elsewhere in the tournament.
Still, I'm excited to see who pulls it out. If game 3 is a solo, then really it's pretty much anybody's tournament. - : Re: Drawing is the last refuge of the desperate

Yeah, I can see how someone would read that. I deserved to lose that game. - : Re: Call for Players ..... who don't CD :-)
@Fortress: the initial move to Venice was purely defensive to prevent you from getting units in Tyrolia and Venice that first autumn. I hoped the subsequent move to Albania would reveal my peaceful intentions, but I learned pretty quick that you were pissed.
That's one of the reasons I dislike playing Austria - Italy has such huge potential to be a great ally or a quick stab, and I have no idea how to prevent the latter possibility while protecting the former. - : Re: Call for Players ..... who don't CD :-)
I completely messed up game 5. I was trying to find the balance as Austria between defending myself against Italy and showing that I meant him no harm. In the end, I think all I did was piss off Fortress.
Still, good games all around. Thanks for setting it up Nigee. - : Re: Non sequitur showdown

@ Nigee: Great game (#3). I didn't think I'd be able to pull it out.
@ Alex: I didn't realize Austria wanted to end it early (honestly, I didn't even notice he voted Draw). I thought for sure he was going to try and eliminate you for the win. My bad if I cost you a survive. Still, thanks for fighting so long. You put up a great effort.

I'll admit, too, that I was happy to see Italy go for the SCs. I think it only happened because this is a tournament game where each SC makes a difference, but it did mean I would have an easier time taking those last several SCs. - : Re: Are we updating the Player of the year awards?
Do it for Johnny. - : Re: Call for Players ..... who don't CD :-)
I wasn't sure if we were allowed to actually talk about the games during the tournament, but if we are, then I should probably mention that I got helped a lot in that game by France and England immediately going to war as it kept any real pressure off of me for the first bit. - : Re: Call for Players ..... who don't CD :-)

I've also taught high school juniors and seniors at private and public schools in three states, and I can verify that a lot of 18 year old do not consider everything they should when it comes to collegiate scholarship. - : Re: Santa re: Rutgers
@ abgemacht: I think that's a testament to your friends. None of my friends based their decision on athletics, but my friends also are people that were serious about their majors. Not everyone fits that label, especially when they're 18 and deciding where to go.
I've worked at three universities, of varying prominence, in two different states. The topic of why students attend these schools almost always comes up (I usually make a point of it), and a surprising number have athletics playing a role in their decisions. I'm not saying that the students chose the school because of athletics, but a large number first considered the school because of the sports teams. Few people want to spend four years cheering for losers (I can say that because my undergrad school was horrendous at sports). - : Re: Santa re: Rutgers
I don't know about the correlation between weak football programs and strong academics. A great sports team brings national recognition, which increases application numbers, that in turn leads to a more academically competitive school.
As for OSU, Ohio State's graduate programs can legitimately be broke while A.D. gives the football coach several million dollars. It's two separate programs with individual budgets, no different than if the English Department were struggling to make ends meet while the Business & Accounting program is putting up new buildings all over campus. - : Re: I know this is none of my business being from Western Europe

About the title of this thread, let me share something I learned long ago that has proven useful over the years. If you ever find yourself starting a sentence with the following:
* "This might be none of my business, but..."
* "This might be the wrong time to say this, but..."
* "I don't want to offend anyone, but..."
* "This might sound racist, but..."
Then stop right there and don't finish the sentence. Chances are, if you think it might be one of those things, then someone else will definitely think it is. - : Re: Gaming with Noobs: GR Challenge

Indian - : Re: Cincinnati sure is apathetic about the Bengals...
Why do Bengals fans hate Mike Brown? Here's just a few of the reasons...
1) He puts no money into the team (we have the smallest scouting department in the NFL with one full-time scout).
2) He puts no interest into the team (I forget which ESPN commentator told the story, but one of them relayed how, early in their career, they went to the Cincy Front Office to ask for press info on the players so they could write up a piece. The Front Office showed them a huge pile of Cincinnati Enquirers stacked up in the corner).
3) He runs the team to make money for his family and not to win games (Mike Brown is President, but Pete Brown is Sr. V.P., Paul Brown is V.P. of player personnel, Katie Blackburn (Mike's daughter) is Exec. V.P., and her husband Troy Blackburn (Mike's son-in-law) is another V.P.)
4) Mike Brown interferes with personnel decisions, but not in a good way (the only reason we got rookie sensation Andy Dalton is because Marvin Lewis and Jay Gruden argued endlessly that we should take him instead of the RB Brown wanted).
5) Brown refuses to spend money to keep key players (e.g. Warren Sapp in 2004 and Jonathan Joseph in 2011).
That's enough to start off the discussion. - : Re: Word Association !
day - : Re: Time/Phase
There are two options regarding time:
* Phase length = time for players to plan & enter orders/builds/retreats
* Joining pre-game period (under adv. settings) = time until game begins.
Putting 1 day for phase length means there will be (up to) 24 hours between every phase (diplomacy, retreat, build, etc.); however, there can be less if all players have submitted their orders and confirmed they are "ready". - : Re: Language of Diplomacy

* CD (as in, "absolutely no CDs"?
* GR ("you should not be interested in points or GR")
* bump

Saw the following on another thread:
"You need to play a few dozens more before you can understand the nature of the game. Especially gunboats require deeper level in tactics and strategy than the normal version of the game."
I've only been on the site for a week or so. What exactly does "gunboat" mean? I thought it was justa fun name for the different games of Diplomacy, but the comment above makes it sound more specific.
