WebDip Poll: Romney vs Obama.
Based on the recent previous discussions on the US election race and the new primaries that almost seal Romney's nomination, I thought it would be interesting to retake the poll that was previously taken over who will win between Romney and Obama in the 2012 US election:

Are you perfect or imperfect?
If you aren't perfect then isn't the best use of your time and energy striving to improve yourself instead of passing judgment on others? If you are perfect then why not share the secret with everyone instead of passing judgment on others?

When this feature is used all at the same time - is there a general consensus as to what it is meant to imply?

My feeling is that the player is saying 'peace peace peace! we have to work together against the solo threat'. Is that what others see or do people just look at it without a second thought?

Leagues?
What's going on with the next league season?
1) I'm willing to organize (I will not be playing to remain neutral)
2) I have some ideas in terms of structural changes. Basically, starting from scratch and the games will be anon. I will post more details later.

Spring 01:
England. Not a bad country. But hard to solo as in Gunboat, in my experience. And everyone’s here! Sweet.

Autumn 01:
Good moves for me. Russia going south, Franco-German tension. Strange move from Germany. Looks like he’ll go after Russia. And what the hell is going on with Austria? What kind of an opening is Ser, Gal, Venice? Very odd S01 moves from Germany and Austria. Italy too, what with the move to Piedmont. I like that call though, since it will hopefully ensure France doesn’t trust Italy. He’s far less likely to stab me that way.

Builds 01:
Well. That’s odd. I’m suspecting multi Austria/Italy, unless there’s some weird Aus/It opening that I don’t know about. May have to look that up in the archives. Good news is Germany gets only one build, and I can be aggressive. Build F Lon and plan to move ot North Sea and North to Ska.

Spring 02: F Bre isn’t my favorite move, but I largely expected it, since Mars was occupied. I don’t think France will openly attack me. If he moves any other way than Bre > Mao, Por > Spain SC, I’d be very surprised, and I’ll have to back off Germany. Glad to see the build in Mos too, from Russia. I’ll support him into Sweden. For now.

Autumn 02:
This is interesting. I’m taking St. Pete. I have to, sorry Russia. I can’t pass up a free build. Surprised by the French move to EC. I don’t know whether or not to convoy London to Norway to cover. I’m doing a self bounce in Norway. But I’m convoying London over. Hopefully that will convey to France that I want to move out, but I can’t with him in EC.

Builds 02:
Well this is kind of bad. France held in EC. I realized at the last second that Russia might need a support hold in Sweden, so I gave him one. France is becoming too big for my tastes though. I think I have to build F Lvp, just to make sure he doesn’t get the upper hand on me.

Spring 03:
Glad I did, two fleets from France, which I don’t like. Moving Nth > Hel to gain position on Germany/what will be France. Moving Lon > Denmark to signal I want to fight Germany to France. Worried about EC> Irish, Bre > EC, Spain SC > MAO though. I really hope he decides he’d rather fight Italy. Which I think he might do, given Pie. I have very few armies – my next build needs to be one.

Autumn 03:
Good turn for me. France moved as expected. I can likely take Holland. I’m not sure if I’d rather do that or try for Denmark. Very bad turn for Turkey, which I’d rather not see, but that’s not a tremendous problem. France gave Germany a support hold I’m not a fan of. That’s very interesting. I don’t think he wants me as a friend long term. I think I’ll try for Holland with Hel. That will put me in good position to take Belgium the next turn. Signal SH of EC and a obviously bogus convoy to Tunis to support France attacking Italy. I love screwing around with stupid convoy orders. Maybe I should convoy to Syria instead. Yep. Doing that.

Builds 03:
Damn. Why didn’t I go with the convoy? I can’t believe he tapped North Sea and not Hel. I guess North Sea is less likely to mistakenly work? That sets things back. Glad to see Turkish SH of Ion against France. Italy may be able to hold off France for a bit. Russia’s disband will be interesting. I hope it’s not Swe, strangely. His unit there is working out very nicely for me.

Spring 04:
Well Russia disbanded Swe. But that’s not so bad, now that I think about it. I’ll convoy Lon to Den, which should succeed, unless Germany support holds. Then I can move St. Pete to Norway and take Swe myself.

Autumn 04:
Great turn for me! Hopefully Germany bounces Russia in St. Pete, and I get two builds! That’s a long shot, but one can always hope. Moving Lon > North > Hel > Kiel hoping to get another, but it likely won’t happen. We’ll see.

Builds 04:
A Edi to convoy to Norway. I’ll be trying to get St Pete back.

Spring 05:
Woah, France, what the hell? I’m moving to EC. I hope I bounce you… Other than that, moving towards St. Pete. That’s the goal for my next center.

Autumn 05:
OK, well screw that. I’m supporting Germany to Holland and tapping Belgium. I’ll move Den > Kiel on a whim, but I can’t say I expect it to work. France is about to explode here – we all have to work against him. This is the turn that everything goes down in flames or I start doing really well. We’ll see.

Builds 05: and it looks like it’s down in flames… At least France isn’t in Irish though, although I’m sure he will be next turn. Voting draw to symbolize alliance with the drawing coalition…

Spring 06: WHAT THE HELL GERMANY? A FLEET??!?!?! WHY THE HELL WOULD YOU BUILD THAT?!?! OK. I’m going all out against Germany and Russia. If I can luck my way into a build this season. I might be able to hold off France. This is utterly retarded though. Another German army would have meant being able to take Ruhr and Munich and then Burgundy. You have NO IDEA how to play this game, do you? I was fine with you taking Denmark, but if you’re going to BUILD FLEETS THAT CAN ONLY BE USED TO FIGHT ME, WHAT THE HELL MAN?!?!?

Autumn 06: I’m throwing this to France. Utterly inexcusable behaviour from Russia and Germany, screwing around trying to selfishly get SC’s instead of letting me stop France. With that German army OR mine convoyed away from Norway, we could have done something, but I couldn’t convoy because of Russia, and Germany made the stupidest diplomacy move I’ve seen in a long, long time. I hope France thinks of this and supports me to Kiel. That way I’d actually get a build this turn. There’s no strategic reason he couldn’t.

Throwing the game so early was completely retarded. I used to like these live gunboat games, but this one was an all-time low. What a waste of time. You suck mr. smiley.
☺ (1304 D)
21 Mar 12 UTC
No it wasn't. I threw when it was clear to me that I was going to be eliminated if I continued to fight him. I always wait too long to throw games, and I always get eliminated for it. Germany's build of a fleet made it clear he didn't want to fight France and instead wanted to steal as much from me as he could, and Russia was just sitting there trying to get me to give him Norway. With those two things, there was no way I could survive if I fought France. Hence I threw.

Moreover, Germany took the fleet he build and sent it north into the Baltics, which was even worse...

"Germany's build of a fleet made it clear he didn't want to fight France and instead wanted to steal as much from me as he could"

My fleet build was in defense of your constant aggression. After I saw you disbanded Baltic Sea, I held my units and even offered a support for you to Holland. You ignored this. I found you extremely annoying and obtuse in that game

Check the orders for Spring 1905 I supported you into Holland and tapped Belgium. I could have easily held Denmark if I wanted to, but I was trying to fight France. I don't know how you didn't see that turn as a blatant signal that I was on board with you. I didn't support hold Denmark with any of the three bordering units, which I obviously would have done if I were going after you.
Sargmacher (0 DX)
21 Mar 12 UTC
I probably missed that because I was playing 3 games at the same time. I think it's unfair for you to wholly blame me though. We clearly were both at fault in not understanding each other. I do feel the game would have been a draw had you not been so bloody-minded - you criticise me for not responding to your supports, but you didn't respond to mine either. You should have stopped.
☺ (1304 D)
21 Mar 12 UTC
Well maybe you shouldn't do that...

And I don't wholly blame you. If I had been able to convoy Norway back, I'd have been fine. But Russia was also being obstinate. And I considered stopping, but when you had three fleets, you would have just wiped me out if we ever managed to stop France. At that point, it was just lost.

How many gunboat games are solos by France or Turkey? Probably about half?

Because of this, it seems that maybe people ought to have an extra bit of motivation to jump on F or T early on in these games. In this one Italy actually did both! And I sorta screwed that up. Sorry Italy.

The moves I opened with are pretty standard Mr. smiley (u suck). It's called the Southern Hedgehog. It's meant as total defense, and it's a good thing when everyone piles on Austria. In this game it knocked back Russia and kept Turkey at 4. But unfortunately I damaged my chances with Italy. I should have move out of Venice, into Adriatic perhaps, to signal to Italy that I was pleased with his moves. But I guess at that 5-minute interval greed came to the forefront. I was hoping that France would see that Italy needed to retake Venice and Italy would get in to Marseilles. Italy was hoping that too apparently, but Dr. Jingles didn't go for it. Anyway, it's a wonderful plan, but it would have been better had I relinquished Venice in the Fall.

Now that I look at the Fall 1901 moves, Germany's are pretty damn crazy. What was in your head there Sarge? I thought that Germany moving to Baltic is a signal to Russia that he is getting Sweden, but you sure didn't do that. Weird. Then England goes for Denmark and France (FRANCE!!!!) gets the build in Belgium that Italy worked so hard to keep from him.

What a promising Spring 1901 and a horrid Fall 1901. What is up with that??

Why would Germany moving to Baltic be a signal that Russia is getting Sweden, speaker?
cspieker (18223 D)
22 Mar 12 UTC
Well it makes it so that if Germany bounces Russia in Sweden that he won't be able to do it without a cost (giving up Denmark perhaps).

Why were you doing it? So you could take Sweden in Spring? Seems a little risky.

"Why were you doing it? So you could take Sweden in Spring? Seems a little risky."

Yes. And yes it is risky. But I play to have fun and it is important to try new strategies. So it didn't work this time but I had fun trying it and it has worked very well previously.

Moreover, the whole game is about taking risks. If you don't want to do something even a little risky, go play Uno.
cspieker (18223 D)
22 Mar 12 UTC
Risk is cool, but only if there is some reward. Why would taking Sweden in the Spring instead of the Fall of 1902 be any reward? Plus your move strands an army up there in Scandy, much less functional than a fleet. I guess that would keep England happier with you. Though the fleet in Holland can't be welcoming to him.

I guess you were trying to court France? Why on earth wouldn't you bounce him out of Belgium otherwise?
cspieker (18223 D)

Austria's opening is one of the best available in Gunboats. There are articles on it: the Southern Hedgehog. Basically it's defensive against all possible attackers (Italy: breaks up TYO/VEN doublet; disrupts Russian WAR-GAL). Still guarantees Serbia for a build.
gramilaj (100 D)
22 Mar 12 UTC
@cteno4 but it also can make enemies of all your neighbors except for Turkey who hates you anyway. I really think taking the chance that Italy is your friend is worth the risk of losing a dot. And if they're not, wellll, it's in your power to totally fuck up the dynamic of the board however you see fit.
jmeyersd (4240 D)

A few things:

1. Well done, France, taking advantage of all the discord.

2. German opening to BAL I think is pretty anti-Russian. Usually coupled with BER-PRU though. Sarg?

3. Austria definitely shoulda left VEN in '01. France was always going to beat him to the punch with the situation in the west.

Just my 2 cents after skimming some of the above

Shylock and The Merchant of Venice
Ok, I would like to open up a debate on Shakespeare's The Merchant of Venice and its presentation of Jews through the character Shylock.
Some say the play is anti-semitic.
Some say it is a plea for tolerance.
I would like to read it as the latter and would be happy to give my thoughts on why but first - what do others think?
