I hope they do work well. I'd rather have only one map that plays well than a bunch that work only half assed.

yeah same here. i do not want the south american map that one didn't work all that great. it was liek everyone was an austria. i loved ancient med. probably because of the people i played with thoguh too, babak , friendly sword, ivo

I am playing a World War IV map which takes the whole world into perspective on goonDip. Only in the 2102 Fall, but it is interesting enough. With so many countries there is allot to take into account. I am interested in seeing what variants we will have here. With more players then what they have there I am sure there will be more games played with the variants as well.

Maybe a poll should created to find out what variants people want

I don't get the point of fleet Rome. Instead of that variant how about the Winter 1900 one? That way *everyone* gets open deployment.

Chaos also looks interesting, although I haven't played it yet.

I've played modern and ww4. Both were very fun. Forced you to think.

I would also put in a vote for the WWIV variant. So far it's a lot of fun, even considering I drew what appears to be the Hyper-Austria of the game, Iran. Having to deal with the entire world in addition to your small theatre adds a whole other dimension to the game.

I've played pure... its pretty terrible to be honest and really wouldn't recommend it.

Once, but in a live game while I was playing another live game on this site... so I was too stressed to concentrate, and NMRed a few times... I'm happy to get that instead, I've never played south america... I tried the futuristic one and really didn't like it.

I like Chaos. It's very hectic and fun. Hundred Years was ok. Winter 1900 and 1897 are also really good. The North America wasn't as good as I thought it would be.

guys - many of you have never ever even tried any of these variants - so how will you decide on what to vote for? those of us that have played these games on the various PBEM sites can tell you that there are few maps that are 'balanced' ... and some that are MORE balanced than the actual Dip map (which lets face it - is not really all that balanced right?)

but the world war IV map is awesome... i'm playing on that and i'd love to see it implemented here. Chaos is a great game that any dip player should want to play because it really tests your skills.

colonial and youngstown are the most famous - though modern is also a good well-tested variant map.

a four player map that is very balanced and popular is sail-ho but goondip does not seem to have it. but ancient med and hundred are pretty 'standard' or early dip variants that have quite a following in the Judge and PBEM world.

another fun map is 'crowded' which would work quite well on this site I think.

but the 'world dip' map and the south america maps I also do not like very much.

if I had to put my favorites in order - it would be this:

1) World War IV
2) Chaos
3) Crowded
4) 1900
5) Ancient Med
6) Modern

Also, for the short time that Goondip had Fog of War games was fun. Hopefully gilgatex gets that running smoothly because fogged games just completely changed the way the game was played.

why it calls World War IV instead of World War III ?

@Babak - Which countries would you say are unbalanced?

I think any country can be good or bad depending on who you play with, how you play and sometimes a little bit of luck.

I've had great games with Italy, and terrible games with Italy. I think in their own ways all the countries are balanced.

I'd suggest doing something like adding a new variant every fortnight or so.

Though I'm not really very interested in variants to be honest.

all things being equal, on average italy wins less than any other country.
also austria gets wiped out early more than any other country, and i think turkey survives longer that others. (even longer than england) But because we all know these in-balances (due to the geography of europe in standard) we can diplome around them.

Crowded is fun, Chaos can be good, but i'm not swung by it yet.
I want to see Touch- which is a variant to communications like gunboat or global press and og of war (which limits what you can see on the map)

i've never tried colonial, and i think i'd rather see youngstown.

Ancient med is a nice 5 player.
It would be possible to support:

2 player - standard F-E-R vesus G-A-T (italy neutral)
3 player - Hundred year war - i've heard good things about
4 player- Sail-ho?
5 player - Ancient med!
6 player - Italy neutral (as suggested in the box)? or your best suggestion
7 player- Standard plus winter 1900, maybe milan, 1897/1898
and Colonial
10 player - Youngstown/Modern?
11 player - Crowed
34 player - Chaos

How can you pick only a limited number of games? I think the two players variant is betterthan gunboat for a tactical game...

oh and the 1 player variant - 'I win!'

The beauty of a variant is that it brings tactical manouvering back into play again rather than just pure diplomacy. once you have played a fair few games of the traditional map - you have pretty much figured out where the stalemate lines are and what the best moves are to compliment your strategy. With these new variants you have to start from scratch again to a certain extent. Some of the maps I am sure have more imbalances than the traditional board, but the beauty of DIP is that these imbalances are perfectly visible from the start and the right Diplomacy can make up for them.

Personally the ones I really want a the close variants - 3 player, 6 player and fleet Rome.
Also, FoW and Touch would be nice.
These are all very close to the original game, and could be added without too much extra work (although FoW would require improvements in the map system).

As for the other ones, would be quite nice to see Ancient med, although I haven't played it, I've heard lots of good things about it.

FoW is almost done on Goondip, there is a bug which needs some work but i think most of the work is ready.
