Help explain negative numbers to a 5 year old - NDC
So my 5 year old is fascinated by math, and we recently came across the concept of negative numbers. But I find myself in a dilemna in trying to teach him what they are. Can you actually have negative anything? And forget temperature, thats not based on an absolute scale. Negative Kelvin would be impressive. He can't really have negative apples, or dogs.

Doctor Who vs. Star Trek- A Clash of the Titans
So I am a huge Trek fan (I'm watching Star Trek IV as I write this) but one of my best friends, who acts/stage manages in our theatre dept., is a HUGE Doctor Who fan.

In a clash between these two titans, who would win?
(See below for details on the debate)
obiwanobiwan (248 D)
10 Mar 09 UTC
Now, before I write this, I must admit I know almost nothing about Doctor Who. As far as English Series go, I find English comedy usually better than American (with oldies like Marx Bros. and Everybody Loves Raymond as an exception), so Monty Python and The HitchHiker's Guide are among my favorite shows.

Here's what I'll do, then: I'll lay out the rules, and the case for Trek, and then one of you Doctor Who-ers can come along and start us off.

Now both franchises have different crews/different people playing the Doctor and companions. So it'll all the Doctors (all ten I understand have been in so far) plus the six best companions vs. the two best composite crews of Trek.

To keep things fair- no Daleks, evil Klingons, Cybermen or Borg: just the "good guys."

So, the Trek combatants:

Obviously this calls for the two best and most famous ships, Kirk's Enterprise and Picard's Enterprise D.

The crews:
obiwanobiwan (248 D)
10 Mar 09 UTC
On the NCC-1701 (The A team)

-Captain: James T. Kirk

A cultural icon who's a renowned explorer, has won countless ship-to-ship and hand-to-hand battles with more beings than anyone else (not to mention his getting off with more gals than anyone else in the galaxy.) Cares about his crew and the well-being of all above all.

-Second-in-Command: Spock

He's Spock. EVERYONE knows Spock- enough said.

-Engineer: Montgomery "Scotty" Scott

Another cultural touchtone, one of the most famous Scottish (even if he really wasn't) characters in media history. Not ONLY has he repaired and improved every spaceship he's ever touched, but he's done it, gotten drunk, then done it with a hangover :p THAT's talent.......

Doctor (Medical): Leonard "Bones" McCoy

If you've ever heard "Damnit Jim, I'm an doctor, not a ____" or "He's dead Jim!" in a skit and not known where the joke came from, look no further. More than a doctor, McCoy serves as the emotional Yang to Spock's logical Yin, giving the middle-ground Kirk the full picture and making him unbeatable when the three of them are together.

Helmsman: Data

If you were expecting Sulu, sorry- they can't ALL be TOS, and Data is superior in any case. an android that wants to be human, and reminds us what it is to be human, Data is one of the most intriguing characters in Trek, blessed with superhuman-level intelligence, comprehension, reflexes, and strength, plus an ever-increasing ability to "be human," Data is also now a member of the Robot/Android Hall of Fame. And he pilots the ship pretty well, too. :p

Navigation/Weapons: Worf

Along with Data, one of those characters on TNG that allows you, the audience, to see humanity from the view of an outsider, Worf is a Klingon among humans,a warrior in anti-war Starfleet. He brings a much-needed touch of agression to Picard ans Sisko's ships (and then Picard again in the movies) while always retaining a sense of dignity and honor. Worf is easily the most trigger-happy character in our pantheon of heroes here, and has the most extensive weapon knowledge.

-"Nurse": Deanna Troi

Technically a counselor and shrink, Troi is the moral conscience of the crew of Picard's ship when even the most merciful crewmembers are howling for blood. ALWAYS trying to see every conflict from every angle, Troi also gets bonus points here for being a telepath of sorts.

-Auxillary Crewmember: Seven of Nine

Even ignoring the admittedly shallow reasons for wanting to put Seven into a fight, she's easily the best non-traditional-post character in any series. Technically human, she's still partially Borg, and thus keeps all that tenacity and efficiency.

NCC-1701 D (The B team)

-Captain: Jean-Luc Picard

Whether he or Kirk is the better captain (I personally like bothe but favor Picard a touch), there is no doubt Picard's another cultural icon and great leader. Where Kirk relied on his guns, guts, his crew to do their job and Spock and McCoy's advice, Picard is more of the thinking man's captain, and the ultimate delegator of duty; he ALWAYS gets the right people in the right place at the right time to do just the right thing (and he had the courage to go into space bald lol.)

-Second-in-Command: William T. Riker

Whereas Kirk's the more emotional and Spock's more logical, Picard and Riker are the reverse; they don't have the same chemistry one on one, but rather Picard lets Riker develop into a far different captain than himself.

-Engineer: Geordi LaForge

If you're a DS9 fan and hate O'Brien's not here, sit tight for a bit. Geordi, meanwhile, has superior (in some ways) sight than others thanks to his VISOR, and was given the blessing of the master, Soctty (and Scotty wasn't even drunk......) In any case, Geordi's pulled his Enterprise out of plenty of harrowing experiences, too.

-Doctor: "The Emergency Medical Hologram" (EMH)

Another of the want-to-be-more-human characters, the EMH is a hologram that has a VERY useful feature- since he's tied in with the ship, he can (eventually by the end of the series) go anywhere in the ship in a second, and is less vulnerable to attack, let alone his computer knowledge of medicine.

-Hemlsman: Hikaru Sulu

Here's Sulu. The eccentric and "flamboyant" helmsman on TOS, Sulu is one of the best pilots in the fleet, can lead a landing pary, eventually becomes captain of his own ship, and is a great hand-to hand/melee fighter (fencing, anyone?)

-Navigator/Weapons Officer: Pavel Chekov

I have an admitted bias here- Chekov is my favorite character in all of Trek, why is another story. Worf served on TNG-DS9, and Malcolm Reed on ENT is really forgettable and nothing special. The only serious competition here are Harry Kim and Tuvok, both from VOY. NEITHER are as versatile as Chekov, however- Chekov is constantly gaining experience and strength, takes more punishment than any non-red shirt, can take an active role in landing parties, and can navigate and fire phasers and photons well, and at the same time.

-"Nurse": Nurse Christine Chapel

There really aren't too many big roles for Trek nurses (the Doctors get all the glory) so Chapel gets the nod for being competent and the only Trek nurse who was actually........ a nurse.

-Auxilliary Crewmember: Miles O'Brien

See, DS9 fans, here's your Irish techie. Another great engineer, O'Brien probably also saw the most sombat and leadership action of any non-captain or second-in-command character (though Scotty and a couple others can have an argument at that.) Whatever the case, O'Brien is extemely versatile in battle and in the engineering room, and is the pick here.

So that's the Sweet 16 for Trek: Doctor Who fans, your turn......

um...have you veer seen a doc who episode?there is no crew at all, its just him and one "companion" who knows next to nothing and acts as a counterpoint to the Doctor's galactic size brain and thousands of years of experience. in start trek terms think of it as Q's knowledge of how the universe runs with picard's sense of duty and morality, kirks verve and energy coupled with data's knowledge/ability with of all things technological. the TARDIS has no weapons as such but its a far more advanced ship than the Enterprise.

i think a better competition would be Babylon 5 or battle star galactica.

I watched the first ever episode of Dr Who on tv as a kid so I am clearly an ancient relic.

I do though prefer Star Trek and have a few favourite episodes that rank among my all time favourite (relaxing) viewing.

And, here comes the confession, I took part in a seven day role-play of Star Trek locked up in a canal barge with a group of friends (pre-Uni). We did a lot of poker in that boat and never met a single Klingon. We did though find a lockmaster's wife who turned out to be a complete and utter Trek nutcase and we had to make a retreat from her as she asked us about 'decibels of radiation' [sic].

There was some booze as well. Romulan ale and Aldebran whiskey if I remember correctly.

Well, Romana would have to be the companion of choice. A "fellow" Timelord along would make the pair unstoppable. But for eye candy, Nyssa or Tegan so long as they leave that brat Adric behind. Peri would also make for great eye candy. Now, to the incarnation I think would kick the most arse... I really liked Eccleston, even if he did only do one season/series. But I also liked the HUGE ego of Colin Baker.
Invictus (240 D)
10 Mar 09 UTC
I hear Romulan ale is equal parts rum, Everclear and Blue Curaçao liqueur.

I've seen a little Dr. Who and didn't really care for it. I thought it was rather stupid, but as a Star Trek fan I realize I'm not arguing from a position of strength.

The easiest Star Trek movie for people to watch is by far Star Trek: First Contact. That's pretty much an action movie with the Enterprise crew. I want this new movie to be successful and open the series up to a lot of people for the first time, but not so successful that we get eleven more movies with this new cast that contradicts pervious canon. Enterprise already pissed me off enough.

I'm gonna go watch ESPN now so I feel a little less like one of those people who argue about Star Trek over the internet.
Dexter.Morgan (135 D)
10 Mar 09 UTC
Star Trek (original, TNG, and Voyager) all superior to the current Dr. Who... on the other hand, Tom Baker's Dr. Who (for example) is far superior to DS9 and Enterprise. ...beyond that it's like trying to choose between apples and oranges, as they say. Both wonderful on their own merits.
To return to the original question. In a clash between them who would win? The Doctor of course. You can't win a time war if you can't travel in time.

If he had a good enough reason The Doctor could go back in time and simply distract Zefram Cochran's mum just before she sets eyes on the man who would have been his father and that's that. No more warp drive, no more Enterprise, no more Star Fleet, no more Star Trek. Game over.

I'm a big fan of both. I was 5 when the first episode of Dr Who aired. My fascination with space was already well established even at that age, so I was allowed to watch it.

Star Trek:
Favourite era? TOS (Kirks era).
Favourite character? Worf.
Favourite Episode? The Doomsday Machine.
Favourite moments? When Q takes the p1ss out of Worf "Micro Brain! Growl for me. Show me you care. Eaten any good books lately?"

Doctor Who:
Favourite doctor? Jon Pertwee.
Favourite companion? Sarah Jane Smith.
Favourite story line? Blink! (the one with the Weeping Angels).
Favourite moment? "Don't blink! Don't even blink! Blink and you're dead. They're fast. Faster than you could believe. Don't turn away, don't look around. And Don't.. Blink.... Good luck."
Invictus (240 D)

Warp drive and Klingons... Maybe they stole it when the Vulcans tried to make first contact and they ate the would be Vulcan ambassador. <grin>.

Speaker... Blink is an Awesome episode. As fond as my memories are of the old series, I think the new series are better written over all. I won't compare production value because the 60s and 70s had to make due with a smaller budget and didn't have cheap digital effects like we do now. But some of the new stories are just plain brilliant!

As far as Trek's time travel... They either have to piggyback off the Borg or go warping through the corona of the son, or discover some other Deus Ex Machina to get them there. The Doctor just throws a switch, cranks some handles, and everyone holds on for dear life. I think the Doctor wins on that front.

And last I checked, no one in Starfleet as singlehandedly wiped out an entire alien race. The Doctor may as well have annihilated the Daleks the first time around (a few survived out of circumstance) and DID annihilate them the second time.

As a future society i really like the idea of the Star Trek Federation. Decentralized small communities joined by one global peace loving quasi military force bent on the acquiring wisdom and knowledge. Peaceful, multi racial , sexually liberated ,beyond greed and scarcity and engaged in a noble mission of protecting innocents and exploring the universe. It is the ultimate liberal left fantasy scifi.

i do have a problem with the fact that nearly all aliens they come across are humanoid and the only distinguishing mark between then is different foreheads. I also find the main alien races-romulans,vulcans,klingons to be incredibly shallow and one sided. romulans are ALL devious sneaks, Klingons are ALL noble savages and Vulcans are ALL cold logic obssessed elves.

"i do have a problem with the fact that nearly all aliens they come across are humanoid and the only distinguishing mark between then is different foreheads."

That's true, particularly with Voyager, but there are nonhumaniod aliens. Tholians come to mind, and the Horta. The aliens look just like people because it's cheaper to just put makeup on an actor's forehead than make a complicated costume or make a computer image.

As for the Romulan Ale, I'm trying it this weekend. I'm kinda scared, actually. That's a lot of booze.

Oh... so the original question was in regards to an imagined battle between the two? First of all: not likely being that their both altruistic and good... second: any battle that either has is always won (barely and in a nick of time)... so, thusly, any battle could not be lost by either... so the battle would never end (since it could not end in a loss), third: the time travel advantage that the Doctor has is more than counter-balanced by Q... though Q may toy with Picard and the Enterprise, he's also saved them and would not let them truly come to harm.

Dare I ask for your favourite episodes from each side?

For me, whilst there are many obvious choices, the single ST episode that moved me most was from DS9 of all series and was 'The Visitor'.

From the Dr? I have not seen the last twenty years but I do recall an episode with John Pertwee (or was it William Hartnell?) that seemed to go deeper than usual. It involved cactus-like beings that, when touched, released a poison that had no antidote and left the victim permanently paralysed yet fully conscious: the script had the Doctor moralising on this and it was way above the simple good versus evil extermination stuff. To a young kid anyway...

Oh my- I left for a little bit........

I'll take the "apples and oranges" argument someone stated above, that's how my Doctor Who friend and I see it.......

Oh, and my name- I was introduced to sci-fi with Star Wars when I was 6, and I love the original films and III (I and II are pretty bad) but all this new animated crap and books is just milking it and killing the magic, so I've sort of shunned Wars for a while, until it fixes itself.

On the other hand, my middle name is "James" because my dad was a Trekkie and of course loved JAMES T. Kirk. :)

So Star Wars is my childhood, like a good fairy tale, Trek is my show/movies to watch, what I like now first and foremost.

And I see the all-too-predictable Kirk v. Picard fight broke out- I'll start a thread for that........
