Jeopardy
I was watching Jeopardy two days ago, and what do I see as a category for the Double Jeopardy round, but "Diplomacy, the Game".
fortknox (2059 D)

All the answers were things anyone who's played the game will get, no problem (like, "France starts with supply centers in Paris, Brest, and this port town"). Wish I had a vid to share, but I found it exciting that there was a category I knew the answers for the whole list quickly, and confidently. It looks like only one person knew all the answers (eg played the game).

Anyone else catch it?

Yes I saw it also. That should increase the interest in the game.

Haha fantastic. Clearly we have a fan amongst one of the writers. I wonder if Edi knows them... seeing as Edi probably has tabs of everyone who has ever even glanced a Diplomacy board. =)

Yeah man I love Jeopardy stuff their categories are everywhere.
ugh, I hate that Trebek. Always acting like he knew all the answers before they gave him his little cards.
also, I'm not sure this is entirely right: "Each army unit is represented by a cannon; each fleet unit, by this, also the name of a different game"
I mean, first off. Ours is not a cannon, it's a tank. Second, when I play FtF diplomacy games the fleets are just long pieces of wood.
Onar (131 D)

You play the old-school version, I know that Colonial Diplomacy has units like that.

The 1999 version of the game had metal pieces of a Cannon (WW1 Howitzer type) and a metal battleship.
In the new version of the game where they use cardboard counters, they have drawn on the counters cannons and top down views of Battleships.

Other pieces over the ages have been
Wood (most popular)
Plastic Anchors and Stars (most hated)

European sets have had various odd shapes like the old Risk sets
includiing cubes instead of rectangular blocks, and shaved wooden rods with pointing fronts, and triangle Tent like pieces for armies.

Pirated Brazilian set had cardboard counters that stood up in counter holders that were rather gross.

Pirated Argentine set had plastic tanks and plastic ships of a merchant tanker style rather than a warship.

I bought the anniversary set online recently and had it shipped over from the US.... the cardboard pieces are rubbish quite frankly, as are the general colours used.

I havent much F2F but I found the whole board pretty confusing to look at even though i have played here a lot, so god knows how some of my friends felt (who were playing for 1st time).

Rather dissappointed with the manufacturers efforts!!
Geez Pandarsenic you would make me lose the game.... Damn it...

There's a Pirated argentine version?

I never saw it...

The Argentine version is called 1914 and it is so horrible that it is beyond just poor. The map was changed with some silliness but the quality control or I should say the LACK of quality control led to the 'conference' map and board map not being the same. For example: the right hand part of the map cuts off Armenia so that you cannot go Sevas-Arm.
Helgoland was extended so it looks like it borders London. The North Sea does NOT border Denmark, there is an unnamed body of water between Belgium and Helgoland and the non existent channel.
Switzerland, Silesia and Syria are all supply centers,
they also screwed up the starting placement of pieces so that some countries have units that start at sea in Spring 01.
It also comes with a 3 minute sand glass timer...for negotiations.

For a joke we played the game at recent San Francisco Bay Area social game. We played it Wilson style (no one leaves the table and all talks in the open)...we had a good time because the game was that horrible but after a half hour it had a potential to get serious so we put it away rather than commit any more time to it.

CD takeover
In our Gunboat game, we have two CD countries in good shape. They haven't lost too much ground since they border each other (France and Germany).

Alternative to balance Italy
Please discuss. I posted this in another thread but that thread seems to have died. The idea requires the Italian map to be slightly redrawn but it may have quite good results.

MODERATOR???
Why have I made 3 posts about a game being unpaused without myself unpausing and they have not been responded to? I didn't even make a move because I did not have knowledge of the game being unpaused. Hispano hablantes is the game and you will find the link on my other posts if you scroll down.

Rules Question - coasts of Bulgaria and Spain
Suppose there are two fleets, one in a province with two territories and another in a territory adjacent to both coasts of that province (e.g., Spain(sc) and Mid-Atlantic Ocean). Can the fleet from the Spanish south coast move to Mid-Atlantic while the fleet from Mid-Atlantic moves to the Spanish north coast, or do they bounce?

Analogous questions could be posed for Spain/Portugal or Bulgaria/Constantinople.
