As I recall...
when some of us, me, thucydides, sean, wonderllama etc, were disscussing making a game together, someone mentioned that they "would love to see the press that comes out of that game"

heres one moves worth

Spring 1901: ugh, nevermind. oh and america's defense spending has nothing to do with anarchists in the states. all of the spending is on the military not the police force
09:22 PM Spring 1901: well it used to have to do with anarchists in the states - back in the day they were known as "confederates"
09:24 PM Spring 1901: I would hardly call them anarchists. secessionists yes, but not anarchists. besides I dont think any of the states are planning on seceding anytime soon
09:25 PM Spring 1901: well sure now the confederates are iraqi or iranian or god forbid, taliban.
09:28 PM Spring 1901: ok, you need to define what you think is a confederate
09:43 PM anyone who opposes the united states federal government, essentially :)
09:44 PM well you are incorrect.
09:53 PM metaphorically? i'd say on that level i'm right on.
10:06 PM if you are using it as a metaphor than that is different. metaphors are like opinions, they can be bad, but not really "wrong"
10:08 PM sure but all meaning is structured as a metaphor. and if something that claims to have meaning is wrong, that it is a metaphor does not rescue it.
10:12 PM I really dont feel like getting into the symbolism and objectivism of language, that could take hours. besides we're veering off into a tangent
10:32 PM we have weeks to play this game. all i'm saying, is that if you are not on the side of the united states army, you are against it. call it what you like, confederate, indian, nazi, communist, anarchist, iraqi, terrorist, whatever, there is only one question that matters in this life and you better answer "i'm with the USA" :)
10:43 PM indian?
ok you know what fuck america. I love the place that I live but I hate the people in charge. America isnt that great. yes there are places I would like to live a lot less, but why is america always judged, not by how good it is, but by how bad it isn't?
and all those things are very different, confederates, nazi's, communists, anarchists, all the things you listed are very distibct and different from each other. being for or against the U.S. is NOT the only question that matters, and that kind of shortsighted and ignorant arrogance are exactly the reason why americans are so intensly disliked abroad

11:02 PM america is great. it is a triumph not only of an idea that stands the test of time, but of all the temporary intervening ideas that adjust to changing circumstances. america is always judged by how bad it is, which is why things like anarchism are so appealing - the truly heroic goals that america has always stood for are, broadly speaking, and have been, under attack for many years. basically the equation boils down to order. anarchists essentially reject hierarchical order. while hierarchical order is not something that should crush all freedom or egalitarianism, hierarchical order is an equal partner with chaotic and free egalitarianism. unfortunately, america, rather than seen as a balance of order and freedom, does not get the respect it deserves from its critics who tend to view america only as hierarchical and fascistic, and don't fully consider its liberty and freedom. and i bring this up because right now, america is the only force for that component of order in the world today. much of the world faces stupid fanatical conflict, or perhaps water wars or famine or disease, much of the world faces relentless poverty. the only way for human beings to improve our lot on these issues is to recognize that with power and authority comes judicious administration of resources that ultimately can be accessible to all, especially when there are democratic ideals behind the thing. but instead many of our too-comfortable allies deride the essential role that america plays, a role they themselves are unwilling and ill-equipped to take on, and they limit the ability of the united states to do what humanity needs it to do. ultimately america is THE question - can human beings solve their own problems using the best models and approaches that human beings have developed over the millenia? or will human beings be overwhelmed by the inertia of civilization and collapse under the weight of the social obligations we have defined for ourselves.

yes, you view the answer that the collapse is inevitable. but i view that as incorrect, and that the finest days for humanity are not only in the future, they may be in our lifetimes. and america is the only nation that can make this happen. we may not be the best, but we are uniquely suited for a global role in a way no other country has ever been, and that if it succeeds will do more for humanity in one generation than in any other generation up to this point.
11:11 PM by the way, indians tend to prefer the term indian to native american or first person or indigenous.
11:19 PM such hubris. all empires fall.
would i rather the USA
is the worlds only superpower than iran, china,
russia?...of course, its
the lesser of a lot of evils.
you said turkey that you are with the USA or against.
what happens if im with their ideals( democracy, liberty)
but against their methods -(Abraham tanks and b52 bombers )?
what also if i think that their stated "ideals" are just pure
spin and PR bullshit and in fact their actions encourage and foster
the opposite in the world?
11:28 PM yes, but the trick is that it is both. our bombers and tanks will defeat nazism, they will contain and ultimately destroy the soviet union, and they will enforce a just governance of the balkans. but because we are a free nation, we do not have total clarity. we will make choices we think are correct, even moral, and will commit violence, whether in this stupid war in iraq, or the war in vietnam, or elsewhere. our freedom is directly related to this sometimes blind stupidity. but it is also the reason that, even with the blind stupidity, we can often salvage that which we have made wreckage. where the soviet union does not today have influence in afghanistan or even most of its former satellites, you cannot say the same of the american failures. as one example, see the philippines. bloody, stupid and costly as that war was, today the philippines is a solid part of the global economy, and there is a standard of living that is achievable and improving that would not have been possible without the united states. objectively, there is a very powerful idea that americans, with their understanding of the world, with their principles and ethics, have apparently approximated. while all empires of the past has fallen, human beings may be entering a new period - one in which anarchy, poverty, famine and other such forces which are destructive to human communities, may be broadly containable, even conquerable. i am not saying we can do this assuredly. but given that we have a shot, it would not be prudent to take the risk and go for it.
12:27 AM "with power and authority comes judicious administration of resources" you cannot begin to portray amerca as the worlds humantarian. first of all, we are the most wasteful and indulgent country in the world, and that is indisputable fact. America isnt spreading its seeds of democracy and peace throughout the world, it's sowing hatred and death, and feeding hatred. you cannot say we went into iraq to help the people, we've killed 90,000 civilians since we've been there (proof available on request) we didnt go to stop terrorists, hussein hated terrorists, bin laden in particular, and iraq had no terrorist ties (proof in last weeks CIA statement about their mistake) and we dioidnt do iy because we suspected they had missles, (we knew, cuz we gave them to him) and we sure as fuck did not go to help the people, our occupation has only hurt them. not to mention all the human rights violations and genocides we ignore (china, darfur, nicaragua, most african nations)
and dont even try to justify the purchansing of weapons to promote peace "our bombers and tanks will defeat nazism" bombing for peace is like fucking for virginity, it just doesnt work.

and no, they dont prefer indian. dont make cultural assumptions based on nothing. being called indian is like an insult, columbus being so stupid he didnt even know where he was...

We need to stop CD!!
Ok its getting silly the amount of people going CD, even tho they are active in other games.

I think there HAS to be a limit on the number of times you can go CD (as I appreciate there are times its legitimate!) within a certain period of time.

How about if you go CD 3 times within 1 month you are not allowed to join a game for the next month (or at least you are only allowed to enter 1 game rather than 10)

It just seems to many people start a game and then just lose interest due to a poor start...this spoils it for everyone else who is legitimately trying their best to keep the times down.

I am in a game at the moment with 1 Country gone and 3 in CD, it has really spoilt what would have been a good competetive game!

I also see people joiining about 10 games at once, and then letting the ones they 'dont like' going into CD whilst they carry on playing the ones they are doing well without ANY Penalty at all that I can see.

Sorry but this is a Big issue for me and is spoiling a lot of games (and seems to be getting worse all the time....when I joined a few months back there were only about 5 games you could join due to CD at any point....at the moment there are over 32!!!!)

Game name Triangle - Kestas please action
http://www.phpdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=2940

In the Team game Triangle, the German/Austrian team has now dominated the board. The Russian/Italian/English team has now been eliminated, leaving the French/Turkish team with a small French outpost (yours truly) in Portugal and Tunis, and Turkey stoutly defending six centres in its corner.

I am requesting that the game be ended. We all acknowledge that Germany/Austria as a team have won, and I want to get on with my other games!

Aim of the Game
Quick question. If you saw a twelve unit country heading towards a win, and only one of the two medium sized countries left opposing him, would you as the next largest power with six units:

(a) Let the 12 unit country win with no opposition
(b) Attack the 12 unit country with an unprotected back in order to boost your chances of winning.

Answers below please. I hope my frustration isn't too evident here.

He might have asked yeunghauyip to arrange a babysitter for him.

I can assure you that Wombat was exceptionally busy in the days running up to his departure and had no time to sort everything out. He might well be able to get some access (he is staying with a host family).

I too am in Germany now...

I don't feel too happy about this either Roger!
I'm not saying it was intentional flashman, but the fact remains that if Yeunghauyip is controlling two accounts in the game then it is virtually impossible for the rest of us.

And this is from the ingame chat, sent by Turkey. If anyone knows a reason why this is _NOT_ metagaming, please tell me:

04:53 AM i will get out of this game
04:55 AM because of Germany he ask me to give him my land, and i will give him, because we are frd

04:56 AM he have wombat account
yeunghauyip (1654 D)

I find this VERY UNFAIR FOR ME TOO!

In fact, roger has Wombat's account AS WELL. Wombat guess the both of us authority to access his account when he personally goes to Germany & will be unable to move, the the first priority that he survives with 300 points.

Yesterday, I went into Wombat's account to check his moves, he told me how he wanted the things to go in his other games (Fastskin LZR and Pleni........), so I changed the moves roger set for him as roger didn't receive any information from Wombat how he wants his other games to be played.

Then, I went into this game 'Ng Wang Ho' that Wombat, roger, finglesquidge and I are in. I saw the moves roger set for Wombat & found them HARMFUL to me (attacking my lands), and then profitable to roger (supporting his convoy landing which I was capable of stopping if Wombat's account wasn't involved, although I never thought of it). So I changed the moves, moving all Wombat's units back to his homelands, or towards it, except two, I admit, to let his army in Serbia go to Rumania which was roger's, and to stop roger's convoy landing. I expected roger to realize that because that time I was on the phone with roger, READING OUT THE MOVES ROGER SET FOR WOMBAT TO HIMSELF LOUD & CLEAR, & HE WAS IN WOMBAT'S ACCOUNT AS WELL. Yet he didn't, & his plan was ruined. It was only Spring. He has as much time as he likes to retrieve Rumania or simply order Wombat's unit to move out of it, I wouldn't stop that as I was kidding on that at the first place.

What's unexpected was, roger grew EXTREMELY ANGRY & blamed me for doing that. He scolded me in the phone as if he OWNED Wombat's account, & he said as if he never knew I wanted to fight him. Since the moment Wombat's told the both of us to babysit his account, I told roger that I wanted to fight him. One on One. But he shouted at me in such a way that he "wanted to be friends with me all along". Then what were the moves attacking my lands? I thought of how I shall keep Wombat alive in the game to achieve his goal - 300 points, but all roger wanted was to eat up the whole of Wombat, or at least as much as possible.

finglesquidge, I never asked roger to give me his lands only for the sake of my profit, but diplomatically for the whole plan's sake after persuasion and he profited as well. He just grew angry like a child and accused me everything as if he isn't involved.

Tactically in the game, finglesquidge, this has to happen since it's Wombat's will to let us babysit his account, but it's still a struggle between me & roger to fight outside or inside Wombat's lands. As for you... It doesn't matter since the fight down South won't affect me & you in the North, & we already have a deal now.

Hey I've an idea, why don't you guys stop playing in games with each other and actually play in games against 6 strangers where you have absolutely no advantage or disadvantage, and you can do what you like with each other's accounts?

I'm sure all the innocent bystanders who are in games being ruined by this meta-crap will be very grateful also.

Well I have not been impressed with the conduct in this game before.
France, who was Salameneser at the start voiced his opinion that they were playing suspiciously (have a look at the opening history when it's sorted out), and I have to agree with him.
Noodle - too right
However this game finishes I'm not sure: if it is cancelled and opening bids returned, then maybe it should be noted Sal started as France, and not whoever it is at the moment

17 Mar 08 UTC
Well, I will freely say this: I am far from impressed and will endeavourer to avoid any future games in which more than one of your group are present. Now, if over time you persaude people you are no longer playing like this then I might change my mind, but for now I'm out.
There is no way this game could ever have been won when you control all the accounts, and the only other player leaves you his supply centres.

i think it might be a case of wombat going on holiday/school trip and getting his friend to babysit his account (thats fine viola).
what was wrong is in one of wombat's games his babysitter is also in, that shouldn't happen/isnt right and im sure next time wombat will find another person to look after his accounts.
lets not get carried away and start demanding people's heads and getting them kicked out.
yeunghauyip (1654 D)
17 Mar 08 UTC
sean, thanks for your generosity, it's very much appreciated.

I will draw this game, but no matter what, finglesquidge, you will die. Study the situation, you die no matter whether Wombat is controlling himself or not, the 3 of us fight or not (we ARE fighting, just paused for a moment due to the argument). Don't blame others for your death.
figlesquidge (2131 D)
17 Mar 08 UTC
Actually, I wasn't. However, since the very early game I have had a conversation with France about your suspicious moves (Turkey marching into Finland etc, across German-owned Russia). I was interested in whether this was a rare occurance, so I asked arround, and it turns out that there are several major players who also have this view about you and your friends always allying, or playing until it is just you left then fighting it out between you. The issue that annoyed me was when you had control of Roger's account, as at the time the only chance we had of breaking your control was by persuading him to attack you. Now, as you controlled both there was no way that could be done, making the game unfair.
I agree that from my current position I won't survive, but in the earlier times I think we had a chance, were we able to split Turkey from you. Also, Turkey has freely admitted that he is not playing for the game in his post in the all-players thread (as quoted above). The extract again, sent by Turkey (I think refering to Austria, but I'm not sure):
04:55 AM because of Germany he ask me to give him my land, and i will give him, because we are frd
Noodlebug (1812 D)
17 Mar 08 UTC
yeung, roger, wombat, please can you explain WHY you think it is NOT unfair on other players that you join games together and always ally with your friends. (Never mind the multi-accounting, which is even more blatantly unfair.)

It is unfair on players when each of you only have to beat 3 or 4 enemies, while all the other players have to beat 6 players like normal. It is cheating. Unless you limit games with your friends to private games, or start treating your friends the same as any other player (ie attacking them and allying with them different times in different games), there will be continued complaints against you and a lot of people will not be happy unless you are kicked off the site.

Already I would think anyone who follows the forums wants nothing to do with any of you, so it is doubly unfair on new players who know nothing about your cheating methods, and get unwittingly involved in games with your gang which they can never ever ever possibly win.
yeunghauyip (1654 D)
17 Mar 08 UTC
First of all finglesquidge, let's make this clear - when the hell did I have control of roger's account? Yes, there were 2 phases that roger was unavailable & he told me how he wanted to move, & all I did was to enter the moves, not to decide. What he told you and Salmaneser was to put all responsibilities of "betraying" your ally onto me, so that he could USE and FOOL you guys again.

This time, roger is being childish & got mad because his "perfect plan" was screwed by me. Again he tried to accuse me of something not really true because HE WILL NOT GIVE ME LANDS AS I WISH, I did plenty of persuasion to get him to the North, explaining to him how the whole situation goes & how he will benefit from it, as he did. Just because I know him personally, so ALL the effort I've put in is crap!

For the Wombat's part, you got to ask him why he found 2 players in the same game to be his babysitter! It was ME who said in the public thread that there will be a babysitter for Wombat's account, if I didn't say it none of you will know. YOU, finglesquidge, didn't find it problematic until you realized you can't be saved. FRANKLY SPEAKING, ask flashman, or perhaps Wombat himself as Wombat might not have told his dad flashman, I STRONGLY PROPOSED TO WOMBAT FACE TO FACE SEVERAL TIMES THAT FLASHMAN TAKES OVER HIS POSITION IN THE GAME OR BABYSITS HIS ACCOUNT!!! Just that his nice dad flashman has to go to Germany with himself, his dad couldn't take this job and thus he found us "reliable". Any questions about this babysitting problem, please ask Wombat himself.

Last of all Noodlebug, as many questioned, WE KNOW PEOPLE IN THE GAMES. Some time earlier a guy said in this very forum that he knows more than 10 guys in this phpdiplomacy & they're all classmates. & then he's spared & no one questioned him about the games he played with his dear classmates.

Now why the hell can't I know someone in php!? I introduced more than ten & these ten introduced to almost a hundred by now, including the guy who announced his network. C'mon! We're not dear lovers! We're not father & kid! (not refering to Wombat & flashman, they've been clean) We need conversations. We need persuasions, offers & threatenings.

Some time earlier, there was this major guy who said he found allying with some of the people in this php very reliable & profitable, and thus they CARRIED ON THE ALLIANCE ONTO MANY GAMES. People who read it said, IT'S ABSOLUTELY ALRIGHT.

Now, I found allying with this Wombat & roger sometimes reliable & sometimes profitable, so I CARRY ON THE ALLIANCE, WHY IS IT SO NOT ALRIGHT? Our alliance hasn't been so solid, finglesquidge, you've been near to it a few times in this game, I admit. Because firstly, roger got angry on Wombat for the little he gained in the Balkans, & under your persuasion he not only moved towards Wombat but almost quit helping me in the North, he didn't support for one or two phases I admit, but you didn't realize & stuck onto your moves & thus there wasn't much change. Then it was Wombat, Salmaneser was no longer a threat and Wombat got the Italy he longed, you successfully persuaded him to turn against me, in fact until he left for Germany, he was still against me, it was only roger who was swinging to one side & another. It was only YOU who never dared to stab Salmaneser & had this SUPER SOLID ALLIANCE with him that no matter how many times I told you truly that if you stab him, we ally. Yet you didn't & rather let me cut you down step by step. The most solid alliance throughout the whole game "Ng Wang Ho" was DEFINITELY NOT Wombat + roger + me, but YOU AND SALMANESER. You two planned it so well at the very starting of the game, kill me quick. We saw your ambition & they knew I was their shelter from the Anglo-French intrusion, that was the reason we were solid, though incompatible with your alliance's solidness.

In the real World War One, Russia & Serbia these 'brothers', allied because of their similar race. But if Russia found helping Serbia EXTREMELY UNPROFITABLE, would gain herself nothing, DO YOU THINK RUSSIA WOULD HELP SERBIA AND SACRIFICE HERSELF!? There's persuasion & profit.

I never multi-account myself, there must be someone who HAND OVER his own account to me for babysitting, and I move according to their wills, following their first priorities and conditions, I don't create accounts to multi-account like roger (he quited multi-accounting, excluding the babysitting).

What I'm trying to say & emphasize on is that, if it's alright (MANY of you major guys agreed to it) that players carry on alliances with players they found reliable onto other games, the effect is similar to what we're doing, in fact due to our greed, the alliance is much more fragile than carried-on alliances mentioned above. If this kind of carried-on alliances is allowed, what we're doing is legal.
VIOLA (1650 D)
17 Mar 08 UTC
I don´t think that is legal, lets ask Kestas.

I am hardly able to claim no conflict of interest here,

but I am certain that Wombat simply ran out of options. He was, as stated above, exceptionally busy in the last few days before travelling to Germany. He has not logged in since then either as far as I can see.

I do hope this matter can be resolved without too much trouble.

Would a delay of a few days be possible? Wombat will return to HK on the 27th March.
Noodlebug (1812 D)
17 Mar 08 UTC
Let's put it another way. Have any of you EVER attacked one another in the umpteen zillion games you've played together, before you've destroyed anyone else?

You have? Just the one time? Well why not do it more often?

Major players will ally with players they have worked well with before, it is true. I do it myself. However, just as often (and sometimes in the same games) I will fight the same people and work with someone I've never played against before. I keep an OPEN MIND (yeah, capitals for emphasis, I can do it too). I don't SLAVISHLY and PREDICTABLY do EXACTLY THE SAME ALLIANCES in EVERY SINGLE GAME.

kangaroo, . you will get your 100 points back, don't have a hernia and don't go wildly attacking people that as i see from your profile you have never played with.
i can see that you have an issue with one game where it is the case that the 3 guys who knew each other work against you. that is one game.
I have found that when friends/family play together they have a (obviously) increased propensity to ally together but once people have pointed out/complained they correct their behavior.
but to go on about it (especially as it is in one game only)and use personal attacks and swear words is counterproductive. All you are doing is getting their backs up, annoying them and probably making them stronger allies in this (and future?) games.
counterproductive.

So noodle, I accept I'm going to die now ( I missed my builds and so lost my fleet and thus only chance of survival). What do you think should be done about it? I don't want to make strong judgements, as obviously I will give a biased view.
Babysitting is fine by me, and indeed I think its a good thing as it keeps games going, but it shouldn't occur when people share a game

fwiw I will be having strong words with Wombat when I catch up with him. He made a serious error of judgement and left himself and, ironically, his friends open to a complete mess here.

I would very much like to see players be able to agree to undo games when things get out of hand like this. Perhaps when we have mods they will be able to re-wind games back to the start or something...

Right now Wombat is somewhere in the Stuttgart region (host family) and I am in a hotel... We have not seen each other or spoken since we arrived. His competition is a pretty major affair and keeping him fully occupied.

regardless if i play one game, wherein there are 3 friends allied, or if i play 10, it should NOT be permitted. As for getting personal, why don't you check the thread, given foul language came at me first before i responded. Furthermore, the 3 of them all logged on within minutes of one another to use the fuck word over and over. And getting my 100pt back? How? I really couldn't care less, now. Cd seems the only option, since having 3 friends ally and play as one big nation is just pointless... Why bother?

Kangaroo, I think you should play a few more games. You'll have people all ganging up against you all the time, whether they are friends or not. Currently you sound like Hitler complaining that the Allied are, well... allied.

Seem to be quite a few posts on the forum about friends playing in the same games. I do not approve at all, and won't join any that are stacked like that. Perhaps people could post games like this? Thank you

Ah man I'm sick of this, anyway I can also prove that flashman & Gobbledydook are good & fair players. We will stop the babysitting in the same game (for other games Wombat plays but we don't, I go on babysitting, it's unfair for him and those other players if I don't) & see if Wombat gets civil order before we end the game or kill him.

Roger & I haven't reached an agreement upon whether we draw or fight. You know, drawing needs his agreement.

Anyway, guys, you won't see me (confirmed) for a couple of months after this game, roger SEEMS like wanting to quit as well. At most I'll talk in the forum when interested.

I don't want to talk much & start another argument, just end this damn thing. But, patlondon, I like your "complaining that the allied are allied", Kangaroo, you sound too childish & immature. Play more and understand the cruelty of this game.

Last of all, I apologize for all the trouble caused. Sorry. :]

Oh yes, I'm leaving for the sake of my studies. Hopefully accounts don't get deleted because they don't play games for a period of time.

Pages not updating Pt 2
Sorry to start a new thread, but just opening the old one now apparently logs me off. I'm supposed to be permanently logged on.

I've disabled Zone alarm. I'm still having problems, obviously....

Yes, I'm the guy who had the trouble with the envelopes. Now I'm having different trouble with envelopes.... in one game, every message from Austria seems to cause an alert to a new message.... from France.....

Pages not updating
I've seen some very strange effects over the last few hours.

I've seen tabs indicating unfinalized orders in games where I've just finalized. I go to the game, and sure enough, it's apparently still waiting for orders. I hit the update button, and there's a list of the orders given previously. I leave the game, and I see an unfinilized orders tab....

I get a new message alert, go to the game, and find no message alert in the game itself. I go to another message window, and the alert appears for the window I've just left. So I read the message, reply, and leave the game.... I see a new message alert for the game I've just left... but there is no new message. Indeed, the message I've just read has disappeared, or my reply has disappeared.

WTF? This is driving me nuts. Is no-one else getting this?

Firefox, BTW, and yes, I've cleared the cache....

[Game development] Translation to Russian
Hey, guys, hey Kestas!

I would like to offer a help. My friends and I are ready to translate the Game to Russian language (Rules, interface, so on).

We do have a lot of experience of playing diplomacy, so we feel the soul of the game and are ready to prepare a good-quality product. :)

Frustrated
http://phpdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=3107

I'm not going to make any accusations as it would be baseless without concrete evidence. However, England's movements are highly suspect AND has admitted to being a friend of Germany.

Even if legit, I'd prefer in the future to stay out of games where friends play each other.

perhaps we can make it an option and lableled...I don't know.

Kestas,

Potential enhancement which I would find useful is the ability to write and store notes about specific games and also ideally other players too.

retreat bug?
In the game Just a Game 3 (http://www.phpdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=2983), a fleet was able to retreat from the southern coast of bulgaria to the black sea. I'm pretty sure this is a bug, am I right?
