Why would Austria ever attack Italy first?
After being the victim of this mind-boggling attack thrice in a row between here and the Facebook Diplomacy app, I feel compelled to ask. The Italian attack on Austria is risky, but justifiable, particularly if Italy can convince Turkey to focus on Russia... but I cannot for the life of me find an advantage to Austria *initiating* the attack. Responding to a stab, sure. But starting the fight?

Why so little interest in a live World map?
I've seen at least three attempts to get a live world game going (counting the one I've been advertising for the past two days), and I'm a little surprised how little interest there is. Seems like it'd be great fun especially since there is no default strategy ingrained for each nation. So, why so little interest? And if there is interest, when would people be willing to set that up?

Rules Question...
I am playing Austria in the game "Hello Everyone!" In the Spring 1902 I attempt to move into Budapest from Trieste with support from Serbia and Rumania. The Italian player's army in Budapest attempts to move into Trieste with support from Venice. I know that armies cannot cross paths (i.e. move into each other's locations). But as far as I can tell I have overwhelming force (3 vs. 2). Can someone explain why my move did not succeed?

Hey all,

My parents wanted me to spread the word about this in hope of raising money for Cancer Research (my cousin is infected with cancer)

Let me explain...

Lauren, my 26yr old cousin, is now diagnosed with Laryngeal (Throat) Cancer for her 2nd time.
She was first diagnosed in the first instance of this cancer when she was 19, 7 years ago.
Through treatment and radiation, the tumor became smaller and less of a problem. She had constant check ups from then until now, and the tumor SEEMED to have dissappered.
Laurie was a cancer survivor. We were all happy that we made it through, and how these days will never be upon her agian...

But, turns out, we were wrong.

A few months ago, Laurie went back to the doctor and we discovered her tumor had reapeared, this time larger, in the same form. It hadn't started to spread yet, as it was early, but the doctor predicited that it would and we couldn't do much about it. Laur is back to her cancerous days, again...

Now, she's in the hospital, the cancer spreading to different parts of her body. We predict that we will have to amputate her most infected area, the left arm.
She's been a trooper through all of the medication and radiation. Right now, we have no idea how she's going to be.

So, as you can see, Cancer can be complete hell for the person infected and their family.

So, please, find somewhere in your heart to donate to the quest for Cancer Research. I have set up a fundraising website...check it out: http://www.justgiving.com/cancer-help

Thanks for reading,

Peter/superman

17 Jun 10 UTC
You realize, of course, that the more off-topic this thread gets, by those of us who are "being dicks," the more likely it is to be seen by people who may donate?
MKECharlie (2074 D(G))
17 Jun 10 UTC
In that vein, I'd offer the opinion that I would probably donate to a benefit for your cousin, but given that your cause mentioned genetic research, I'll pass, being philosophically opposed to embryonic stem cell research. If you have a different cause that may benefit her, let us know.

There. Now this might become a highly politicized thread that will get noticed by someone else who may be inclined to donate.
krellin (80 DX)
17 Jun 10 UTC
The irony, of course, will be to see how many people that pose as great humanitarians on other threads will be dicks on this one when they have the opportunity to support a noble cause and put their money where their mouth (er...fingers...) are. Nice post, superman. I wouldn't support everyone soliciting every pet cause - but this is personal. My father was recently treated for cancer, so I feel for you, bro.

1 US dollar = 0.6760 British pounds sterling for those of you curious about the exchange rate.

MKE-

Your saying that you WANT thousands, maybe millions of people to die from this disease every freaking month?

And thanks, krellin. That means a lot :)
krellin (80 DX)
17 Jun 10 UTC
MKECharlie - I did not see on the web site where it mentioned genetic research....but I would also point out that not all genetic research is necessarily embryonic. In fact, embryonic stem cell research has been a dismal failure (often leading to tumors), whereas adult stem cell research has led to many successes.

Not to expand on the discussion - but (in opposing embryonic stem cell research) do you also oppose in-vitro fertilization and other efforts to aid in pregnancy involving embryos? (For the record, I agree in being opposed to embryonic research and am opposed to fertility clinics that implant 10 embryos hoping one will survive. Tantamount to murder...)

@ MKE:

Lol. Genetic Research != Stem cells.

As (essentially) a genetic engineering major, I would know.

is masturbating murder?
rlumley (0 DX)
17 Jun 10 UTC
And actually, genetic research is one of, if not the, most promising areas of research. Many cancer drugs are highly effective, but only on a very small proportion of the population - the proportion that has a certain gene. If you can sequence the genome of a person, you can tailor your chemotherapy treatment to the person, and it is drastically more effective.

I will quote Matt Ridley's Genome:

"There is now, for the first time in human history, a real prospect of a genuine cure for cancer ... and it has come from reductionist, genetic research and the understanding that this brings. Those that would damn the whole science as dangerous should remember that." - Matt Ridley, Genome

Stukus (2126 D)
17 Jun 10 UTC
@krellin, those embryos wouldn't even be fertilized unless you were already doing that anyway, whereas these are already-alive people who can be saved by the research. You're opposing the most likely path to saving their life. Isn't *that* tantamount to murder?
krellin (80 DX)
17 Jun 10 UTC
rlumley - You would consider stem cell research a form of genetic research, wouldn't you? though I guess typically I have thought of genetic cures as the kind of thing (excuse my poor description) as hollowing out a virus, putting corrected DNA into the shell, and then introducing the "cured" virus to the diseased host. Would that be correct?

And no...masturbation is not murder unless your sperm contains a full set of genetic code, which is the definition of human life for many people.
krellin (80 DX)
17 Jun 10 UTC
Stukus...you miss my point, apparently. I disagree with the creation of life for fertility treatments. I disagree with creating embryos...let's call them little human beings, for sake of argument...and then maybe or maybe not "using" them. I disagree with the notion of killing one life to *possibly* save another...though apparently you failed to read my statement that - to date - no embryonic stem cell research has produced positive results that I am aware of (I admit I may be wrong), as compared to adult stem cell research, which has produced variety of successful results. I think it is rather demented that some scientists insist on taking the embryonic path when it shows so little promise beyond hope and theory...THAT is wasted research...tantamount to murder by wasting valuable research dollars that could be spent on promising treatments.
krellin (80 DX)
17 Jun 10 UTC
And yes - I will donate once I verify that this is not embryonic research. (sorry, superman...I guy has to stick to his principles. I hope you understand.)

@Lordvipor - not getting into this "can God create a rock too big to lift" type of argument with you. Not because I can't, but because I don't feel like it. You know what I mean, I know what you mean, neither will convince the other. If you can't tell the difference between a skin cell and an embryo, then you aren't worth having this conversation with.
LordVipor (566 D)
17 Jun 10 UTC
you're the one who says that a full set of genetic code is the definition of human life for many people, so I'm just asking what do you mean by full set of genetic code and what is your definition of life based on?

Genetically, there is no difference between the dna of a skin cell and the dna of an embryo, theres just a little bit less dna in a skin cell depending on the age of the host.
LordVipor (566 D)
17 Jun 10 UTC
Im not really sure where god and the rock fit into this...?
rlumley (0 DX)
17 Jun 10 UTC
"though I guess typically I have thought of genetic cures as the kind of thing (excuse my poor description) as hollowing out a virus, putting corrected DNA into the shell, and then introducing the "cured" virus to the diseased host. Would that be correct?"

Yes. Sort of. What you're describing is called a retrovirus. They're very common in nature, but we don't really use them as treatments, but rather means to an end. Usually what's done, is we use something to make the dna we want, which codes for a certain protein, put that dna in a bacteria, ovary cell, etc. (Via retrovirus or one of many, many methods), smash the cells up, harvest the protein, then stick the protein into the human patient. The human needs the protein because their DNA doesn't express that protein because of a mutation.

Re: Murder:

This argument presumes murder is wrong. Murder is not wrong. The aggressive use of force, under which murder almost always falls, is wrong. (I don't actually want to argue this, but I had to say it. =D )
rlumley (0 DX)
17 Jun 10 UTC
@ Lord Vipor: You're not ending the replication of that DNA. You're ending some replication, but you are not stamping it out entirely.

That's where I would draw the line.
LordVipor (566 D)
17 Jun 10 UTC
@ rlumley
I agree with your murder argument
Wrong and right are constructs created by man (or god) and not inherent to nature (animals, sexing, birthing, eating, pooping).
LordVipor (566 D)
17 Jun 10 UTC
So if you kill every single cell of a person but one, then replicate it and clone it, that is not murder?
