The Redskins Rule--RGIII vs. Cam Newton for the Presidency!
17 out of the last 18 elections it's been the case that if the Redskins win their last game before the election, the incumbent president wins; if they lose, the challenger wins.
SO! Months of campaigning and billions of dollars comes down to RGIII and the Redskins on Sunday...vs. the 1-6 Panthers and a slumping Cam Newton. ...Sorry, Romneyites...HAIL TO THE REDSKINS, HAIL VICTORY... ;)

Quickest win ever?
What is the shortest amount of time it can take for a country to win the game? I'm assuming EVERYTHING goes accordingly and no one stops that country. What is the shortest amount of times (in seasons) and which country would I have to be?

Actually, I think all of them can win in 1903. You just need cooperation from other countries.

No, I don't. I just remember fastest win being a topic about a year ago, and as I recall someone had a 1904 win as Russia. I'll try to google for it.

You can win in 3 turns when all 6 other countries CD's
This is a fun puzzle, I am not sure all countries actually can win in 1903.
They would need more than CDs, they would need active cooperation. Especially England.
ghug (5068 D(B))
31 Oct 12 UTC
Well, yes, but I'm pretty sure that it would be possible from a theoretical standpoint.

Can eng win in 1903? It can only get 2 scs in 1901 double up to 10 total in 1902 but can only build 3 giving 8 active units all of which must take an sc in 1903 to win. Can the build in Liverpool reach anywhere that hasn't already been taken and even if it could it needs a convoy which will mean a fleet can't also take a SC.

I'm going out on a limb and going to saying an eng win in 1903 is impossible
BreathOfVega (597 D)
31 Oct 12 UTC
Theoretically, with a French convoy, England could get +3 in 1901. But since Eng cannot use armies AND fleets to go for SCs: no, it's impossible.
Maniac (189 D(B))
31 Oct 12 UTC
Of course with a french convoy to bel eng gets, bel, hol and nor turn 1
St P, mun, ber, bre and port with french convoy turn 2
tun, mars, spain, swe, war, kiel, par year 3 for a 19 SC win
Improbable - but possible
If Eng can do it i'm sure the others can
Maniac (189 D(B))
31 Oct 12 UTC
The puzzle now is what is the maximum SC count for a country (russia) by year 3
Maniac (189 D(B))
31 Oct 12 UTC
I recon russia could get 28 SCs by year 03
Draugnar (0 DX)
31 Oct 12 UTC
I don't think, even with a completely friendly board, that would be possible, Maniac. I don't think his units could reach that far that quickly. That's everything excpet France and Iberia.
I'm going to attempt that in Realpolitik, brb
*jDip.

I got to 24 SCs in 1903. Not sure if my route was optimal or not. Russia starts with 4 SCs, and going to 8 is easy. That leaves you 8 units; I went to 14 SCs but only had 12 units with which to work. Those 12 netted me 10 more for a total of 24 in 1903. I ended up taking Edinburgh, Germany, Scandinavia, Russia, Austria-Hungary, the Balkans, Turkey, and Italy; the Lowlands, France, Iberia, Tunisia, Liverpool and London were left standing.

Draugnar's correct. Russia hypothetically could field enough units to net 28 SCs by 1903, but it can't field them in the right places. You need too many armies in the East to make it to Italy by 1903 without missing any of them; subsequently you can secure Germany but can't get beyond that.

I found a way to win a Diplomacy game in two years, but the proof is too large to write in the margin of this page.
JesusPetry (258 D)
31 Oct 12 UTC
To reach 18 centers in two years is not mathematically possible, even for Russia, so either you're thinking of some other way to win or you're mistaken.

Weird

Anyway, there have only been 9 games on phpDiplomacy/webDiplomacy won in Fall 1903 with at least 18 SC's:
gameID=4194
gameID=6683
gameID=9167
gameID=9567
gameID=10328

Does anything look at all legitimate?

JECE (1248 D)
03 Nov 12 UTC
Well, I think gameID=89551 may be the only real one.

gameID=4194, gameID=86917 and gameID=9567 look like fakes.
See in particular:
England's move here: http://webdiplomacy.net/map.php?gameID=86917&largemap=on&turn=4
And Turkish moves in this game, particularly here: http://webdiplomacy.net/map.php?gameID=9567&largemap=on&turn=2

I'm not sure what to make of gameID=9167 and gameID=10328.
JECE (1248 D)
03 Nov 12 UTC
gameID=6683, gameID=12524 and gameID=12528 aren't even worth comment.
JECE (1248 D)

Alderian: Yeah, well German moves certainly do look suspicious in the last phase:

Out of interest what does "Banned by a moderator: Auto" mean?
smcbride1983 (517 D)
04 Nov 12 UTC
The user was an automobile, which is clearly banned by the rules.
djakarta97 (358 D)
04 Nov 12 UTC
1) What's an automobile

2) Every game that has a pre-1905 win includes multiple CD's. There is not one legitimate game that fields a legitimate pre-1905 win where 1 competent player beat 6 different competent players.

I myself won this Ancient Med game in Autumn of 6, but that was with the help of 2 CD's, an over conciliatory player and an aggressive player who was out of reach to attack.

http://www.webdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=97732#gamePanel

So, I conclude that pre-1905 wins with no CD's or illegitimate machinations are impossible.
bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))
04 Nov 12 UTC
Wrong. The user supported autocracy, which is clearly defined as grounds for a ban by the rules.
djakarta97 (358 D)
04 Nov 12 UTC
Oh, that's what it is...
