Anyone for a summer game
Hello, as summer is coming I am finding myself reluctant to join in games as we often go away for the weekend with no internet access. Therefore I have a proposal:

Dropping the atom bomb
I haven't really discussed this since College and just taught it in my class. I was wondering peoples thoughts on whether or not the dropping of the bombs were justifiable or not. I have always had a hard time with this question, and would be interested in hearing some thoughts.

Game Search Filters Not Working
I'll test more but right now the most obvious is finished games -> won.
This filter is showing me games that were a mere survival (which would be fine) but its also showing me plenty of games where the player definitely lost.

I am so proud of the students at NKU.
When Westboro threatened to stage one of their protests at a local soldiers funeral, the students gathered strong enough to show them down. Of coursem the Westboro cowards didn't actually show, but still... Way to go NKU! You make us proud.

Best WD Games?
So. I like to go through the finished games and look to find the best games. Anyone have any particular games they really liked that I might be interested in? They can be games you were a part of, or just games you found at one point, like I do sometimes, that you thought were really good, or very interesting.

Thanks.

MODs please help: need to pause a game ASAP
Hello, I am currently playing in "Ontario Diplomacy League Game 4". It is a game me and my friends set up and the first we have played on this site (for most of us). One of us just went camping for a week, and we only now realize that you have to pause the game unanimously for it to work. Since he has no access to a computer, we can't do that. Is it possible for someone to force pause it for us until May 4th? Thanks!

quick question
if two units move toward each other, the move is canceled. correct?
as in, if an army in munich moves to tyrolia, and an army in tyrolia moves to munich, then both unit simply bounce. in other words, they do not switch places.

how do you pause?
I tried to pause a game by pressing the pause button, but nothing seemed to happen. Do you need a majority vote to pause the game? A unanimous vote? Thanks for letting me know.

Online mods?
Are there any online mods that could intervene in a game, were ONE player refused to pause, causing a player to go into civil disorder (because of a fire alarm)... he is refusing to cooperate with everyone, and we wish to cancel.
gputin (178 D)

The player got an unfair advantage, and essential a whole country as a result.

this is difficult during a live game...
try working with the other players to stop him.

unfortunately, what he is doing isn't against the rules. simply against sportsmanship
Alderian (2425 D(S))
26 Apr 11 UTC
The best thing you can do is work with all the other countries to show him what happens to a poor sport, eliminate him, and draw.

If a mod helps, then next time he'll just hope a mod isn't around. And frankly, it doesn't really sound like a situation where a mod really should intervene, as Lando mentioned.

Lol. I don't put Any stead in forum fights:)

Is there a reason they aren't!?
SacredDigits (102 D)
26 Apr 11 UTC
Because moderators do their thing as volunteers? They don't get paid, so while they try to help out as much as they can, ultimately, we're at the whim of their schedule. Which is how it should be.
Alderian (2425 D(S))
26 Apr 11 UTC
Besides, determining if someone is a multi-accounter isn't a quick process unless blatantly obvious. So even if a mod was on when a multi-accounter cheated in a live game, the live game would still quite possibly finish with the cheater banned at a later date.

One thing you could do is you could create a password protected game, and advertise it with certain rules stating that if a player joins they are agreeing to the rules and requiring a PM to the organizer to verified and get the password. This would allow mods to take action, if they are around and have time to do something. And if not, then the person goes on a blacklist.
gputin (178 D)
26 Apr 11 UTC
I don't know... Ultimately, I've experienced a lot of poor sportsmanship on this site, its quite off putting and can ruin games for all involved. The player in this game eventually blamed the person who asked for what would have been a 10min pause, for "turning everyone against him". When in reality, he was the only party that refused the draw, so he could take over the players territory. Its not like his moves effected me personally (until I had had enough of him "forgetting" and disregarding our dmz for no apparent gain or reason, and I eventually attacked), but its just irritating to see someone so desperate to win.

Draugnar (0 DX)

So someone kept violating the DMZ and you think that was also poor sportsmanship? Excuse me, but what game do you think you are playing? Don't hurt me? Lying and stabbing are part of the game.

@ Dragunar: Oh please, I don't expect anyone to be totally truthful and uphold all alliances, but this player was ridiculous about it. Would violate agreements with people, and then when they got tired of it, and started to attack him, he acted like he was being teamed up on, or that it was the other country that instigated an attack. It was not just me this happend to.

Basically, Turkey, (who started this thread) has a valid point. Decency, and etiquete on this site sucks.
ilse10 (443 D)
26 Apr 11 UTC
@Dragunar again: Although you can't see messages between players, Russia basically expected me to attack Austria, but also only stay in my territory, not go near his, but it was ok if he came near me. I dislike it when players treat you like an idiot, and frankly, I wish other players had gotten a bit more pissed.
ilse10 (443 D)
26 Apr 11 UTC
I mean, the game was basically an hour wasted for everyone involved, because of one player.
Draugnar (0 DX)
26 Apr 11 UTC
So gang up on him and take him down. He'll eventually learn or give up in frustration.
Alderian (2425 D(S))
26 Apr 11 UTC
"Decency, and etiquete on this site sucks."

You can find and make higher quality games. You can avoid a lot of the asses, just takes some work. You gotta make lists of players you won't play with. You gotta get together with players you have enjoyed playing with and share lists. You gotta start password protected games with these groups and if a new person wants in you gotta make sure they understand that if they are asses, they'll get eliminated and not asked back.

This site is what you make it.
Draugnar (0 DX)
26 Apr 11 UTC
Alderian +1
ilse10 (443 D)
26 Apr 11 UTC
@Alderian: I totally agree, but at the same time, making closed games is a hassel. Personally, I get really irritated at how many of them there are, it can limit a lot of your game choices.
ilse, are you sure that's the right link you put up? There's a bunch of stupid moves in that game, yes, but there was nothing wrong with it. Two NMR's, but Austria came back and you were the other one! As to Russia lying with the DMZs, both you and Turkey broke the DMZ with him first. In 1902 he was just swapping his fleet out of Rumania. A move that warrants a warning, yes, but by no means a violation. I don't see the press, but it appears as though Turkey was the one who lied to him,
Draugnar (0 DX)
26 Apr 11 UTC
So you whine about the quality in open games but think it a hassel to arrange quality games with quality people. You really just want to bitch about something all the time. You're worse than my wife...
ilse10 (443 D)
26 Apr 11 UTC
Furthermore, what of people who are newer to the site, and haven't established a set of players they would like to be in games with? Or those who don't play consistently?
Well, to answer that question ilse, it just takes time. I'm just starting to establish a group of players that I consistently play with and I'm at 50 games! But you'll find your group, even if its just one player at a time. PM someone you liked after a game, and ask them to message you the next time they start a game

@goldfinger: The dorm I was in had a fire alarm. I was hooked up to an ethernet cable, so its not like there was wifi outside I could access. THATS why I had to leave, and requested a briefe pause. I can't speak for Turkey, but as I understand it, they established the dmz within the first turn, and Russia ignored it. I believe the same thing happend to England, and as for myself, Russia and I never established one. So there was nothing for me to go against. He attacked me first, it failed, but he was the instigator.
Draugnar (0 DX)
26 Apr 11 UTC
They haven't earned their stripes. Let em play a half dozen games without a CD and they be welcome in most of the games.
gputin (178 D)
26 Apr 11 UTC
wow.. this went on for longer than expected.
having only read the last 4 responses though... russia didn't inform me he was just swapping the black sea, and we had already agreed on the dmz. he did that twice... plus, there was no reason for him to need support into rumania the first couple turns, if her really felt that way, he could have done it from sevastopol w/o impacting our dmz. thats where i stand..
okay, well i didn't catch the fire alarm bit. That's poor sportsmanship, no doubt. But I'd say that's the only thing you could call foul about in the game. Breaking DMZ's is an everyday thing. When you get up into higher games, alliances change not every year but every turn. THAT'S hard to keep track of, but still nothing wrong with the constant stabs
Draugnar (0 DX)
26 Apr 11 UTC
Get off the DMZ high horse. It happens. Everyone has their own style to play and some are more successful than others.
Yeah, and gputin, he did that so Austria couldn't bounce him out of there, though he could have easily just moved there in the spring. He probably did it to be on the safe side though, to make sure you wouldn't break your word. Tons of paranoid players out there, myself included (actually, being paranoid has improved my play, made me more cautious)
gputin (178 D)
26 Apr 11 UTC
I agree, but it was more Russia's actions and statements after everyone paused but him, that got me irritated, and prompted this post. Not so much that he stabbed at least 4 of the players...
Draugnar (0 DX)
26 Apr 11 UTC
So don't invite him to your games in the future.
gputin (178 D)
26 Apr 11 UTC

ilse10 (443 D)

Austria had 3 other people attacking him at once, if someone uses their head, its easy to see that Silesia wasn't a prime target.
