Russia
So, who here has Russia as their favourite country to play? I dislike it a lot but I'd be interested to hear from someone else who likes it.

Japan disaster and Jquery
Here are some amazing before/after pictures that you can move a slider between to compare: http://5z8.info/worm_fqq
It's an amazing view of the damage nature can unleash on us, and also an example of how cool the jquery library really is.

This Time On Philosophy Weekly: "What A Piece Of Work Is A Man!" (Well...Wha IS He?)
I've been asking everyone I can all week, partly because I'm starting a new part of the book I'm trying to write, partly because I'm listening to an old lecture series based partly on it, and partly because it's a FUN question--what MAKES a "human being," and what makes you..."you?" Is it just a physical aspect, or is there a soul--and since we change every day, are we the same "person" we were the day before? Are we eternal in any way? What are WE?

but anyway to repeat

The question of what makes a person is a question that depends on variables of time an space. It is in essence historical and even evolutionary in the personal history of a single person. An understanding of a "person" was different in 17th century Virginia (taking more into account patriarchal relationships and family, but less racial characteristics that would arise later) than late 18th and early 19th century Virginia ("personhood" defined by the color of skin) than late 19th century and today. "Personhood" is not a fact of nature, it is different today than it was 20 years ago and it will be different 20 years from now.

My two cents drilled into my head during my study of history

And btw, if the essence of Humanity is making a reasoned argument as one of the early posters said I am afraid several of my students are waiting to make the evolutionary jump ;)

I'm sure you are aware of many of the studies on this particular subject. But it was pointed (by Singer) that being a person and being a human being (or having humanhood) are two separate things. The latter would be "to be a part of the homo sapiens species" and the former would imply something thicker, not necessarily exclusive to human beings, including such things as self consciousness/awareness (I prefer sense of self) and such. Though I still agree with many parts of the lockean theory: I am who I am (as a person) mainly because of the life I've lived (the experiences that made it to the tabula) and the memories I have of it, therefore making my character. Reason is not solely human (some animals show some reasoning capabilities) and humans are not all reasonable. Therefore, using it (by itself) as a way to define humans (or persons) seems erroneous. I think the main problem with the very rich meaning of the word person is it's apparently inherent positive meaning, since being a "person" seems to grant certain privileges (such as rights) that non-persons do not "merit".

sigh.....

Once again my detractors flaunt their maturity.
which is why many historians have stated that in the mainland (specifically Virginia but it happened at other times in South Carolina, the inland, etc.) a race based classification of persons rose in the late 17th and early 18th century to grant privileges and place African American slaves outside of the boundaries of humanity. In the west Indies such classifications arose earlier.

Simple pleasures for simple minds, I suppose.
@ obiwanobiwan

I can't answer. Neither can any other human.

I was just making my beliefs known. I try not to waste my time with tough philosophical questions. The truth is, some questions are never going to be answered (barring some sort of divine event). I believe that thinking about unanswerable questions is a waste of time, but I still have respect for those that attempt to answer unanswerable questions.

Sitter
Hey, I need a sitter, but only for one game. I'm in a live game right now, as Italy, and I'm in a fairly good position. I need to leave really soon, so if anyone could finish that game for me, just let me know in the next few minutes and i'll give you my password.

... in the alphabetical disbanding of units that are tied for length away from home SCs. They are supposed to disband in alphabetical order, but I don't believe they do. Does anyone know exactly what the protocol is, not what it should be?

So a bank CEO, a member of a conservative party, and a union worker go into a donut shop together, and walk out with a dozen donuts. The bank CEO takes 11 of the donuts, and then tells the conservative party member, "Watch out, or the union guy is going to get half of your donut."

Anglo-French Alliance
Let me start off by saying that this idea was not based on any current game that I'm in. Generally speaking, France and England will have a hard time cooperating as allies for an extended period of time. Now it was mentioned to me that an English fleet in Brest would be a good solution to this problem/dilemma. What are your thoughts?

The NFL Owners/Players Negotiations Break Down: Lawsuits Pending, Possibly A Lockout
http://content.usatoday.com/communities/thehuddle/post/2011/03/report-nfl-players-association-applies-for-decertification/1
It doesn't look good for the NFL right now...according to ESPN, lawsuits and lawsuits OVER lawsuits are one the way as the Players and Owners fail to come to terms...it's still early, but this could draw on for a LONG time...my 49ers might be sitting on that 7-9 record for longer than I thought...
