That's completely acceptable. Furthermore, that logic is terrible -- people post their own e-mail addresses and IMs on their profiles all the time, you don't have to be friends outside the game to get it, and even if you were, playing with friends =/= metagaming.

Stop being so damn obtuse, please. You know exactly what metagaming is: working together for reasons irrelevant to the game itself. Playing with friends, and playing as if they weren't friends but normal people, is perfectly acceptable.

Furthermore, as noted before, the player in that game isn't chatting with friends -- he was volunteering his e-mail/IM to players in that game to diplome in that game because this site's chat services weren't working for him for whatever reason. So even if you somehow misconstrued my words to allow playing with friends... not what's happening here.

You can use any form of press you wish provided the game is an open press game. If it is no-press or public press only, then outside communication is prohibited.

Some of the live gamers use IM because it is "instant" and doesn't require constantly clicking on "board" to see if your ally or opponent has responded to you. But, as long as it is an open press game, that is acceptable.

Now, regarding "collusion". As long as it isn't a pre-arranged alliance and you treat whoever as if they were any other player, then collude away. Collude means to plot against. We do it all the time. That's what makes the game great.

So, did that help clarify what is and isn't permissible?

This has been discussed quite a few times. You can communicate however you like in standard press games. When Edi Birsan (diplomacy celebrity) used to play here, he used to advocate phone calls.

Not all games, fudgepacker. Only full/open press. Communicate outside the game in a gunboat or partial/public press only and you will get your ass banned for cheating.
