WARNING: DON'T PLAY WITH "MASTERNINJA"
Just a friendly word to all: Avoid playing with "masterninja" at all costs. I hate to ever call someone out publicly or make a scene, but this guy really deserves it. Any game that he does not win, he will call the winner out for metagaming and try to get their account banned by the mods. He makes asshole remarks and just takes the overall fun out of a pleasant game. Avoid at all costs. Also, mods, please look in to banning this player. Many thanks.

I need to relearn how to program (I haven't since Hyperstudio: go ahead and laugh all you programmers who know what that is lol ^_^) because this was boringly tedious and I would prefer statistics where I could play with the parameters being analyzed via a user friendly program

How much evidence is enough?
So, say I've watched the records of a pair of players and they consistently join games together and are always on the same side and always stab their allies to benefit the other player. How much evidence is enough to report them? The FAQ was a bit vague.

A Movement to bring back
First off, I want it to be known that I am in awe of the new update kestas is working on. I think it makes the site so much faster and easier to use and am excited for its full implementation! That being said... I feel that the terms "Update" and "Finalize" are so much more classy than "Update" and "Save" -- which are somewhat awkward and boring. Anyone with me, please voice your opinion here!
The Big Doak (100 D)
03 Nov 09 UTC
And kestas -- please know that this is meant to be nothing but constructive advice. We all appreciate the hard work and time you put in to bring an easily accessible form of Diplomacy to the masses!

The new "Save" and "Lock" buttons are for noobs!
Draugnar (0 DX)
03 Nov 09 UTC
Then you should appreciate them, hellalt. :-)
TiresiasBC (388 D)
03 Nov 09 UTC
I think the new buttons are more intuitive for new users. Fewer people with orders not going through because they clicked Finalize before Update is always a good thing.
@TiresiasBC - It maybe be more intuitive for new users but after the first mistake they would just learn. To me update, and finalize were very intuitive when I first started.
*may be (maybe be? lol I've been too distracted lately)
Alderian (2425 D(S))
03 Nov 09 UTC
With the new auto-updating boxes, "Save" makes more sense than "Update".
Timmi88 (190 D)
03 Nov 09 UTC
then "Save" and "Finalize" would be the best option.

Good point Alderian! :)

"Locked" jsut sounds too... harsh, or something like that.
Jamiet99uk (808 D)
03 Nov 09 UTC
I vote for "finalize" not "lock". I do not think "lock" is any easier to understand for a noob.
The Big Doak (100 D)
03 Nov 09 UTC
@Alderian, you raise a good point about Update. However, I still agree with Timmi and Jamie when they say that "Finalize" is better than "Lock"
Toby Bartels (361 D)
03 Nov 09 UTC
I'm with Timmi88: Save and Finalize.
alamothe (3367 D(B))
03 Nov 09 UTC
update & finalize :-) finalize could also perform an update
kestasjk (95 DMod(P))
03 Nov 09 UTC
Problem is we get countless questions from people about what "Finalize" means, it's even an FAQ item, and many people have made mistakes based on misunderstanding what Finalize means. You may have find it more intuitive now that you know it, but it does seem to be a real source of confusion

Re: Update/Save as others have said I think Save just makes more sense given the new way things (will, soon) work
Xapi (194 D)
04 Nov 09 UTC
How about "Ready" or "Finished".

Locked seems too final, but so does Finalize.

Perhaps we could find a better word.
Xapi (194 D)
04 Nov 09 UTC
I agree with "Save"
kestasjk (95 DMod(P))
04 Nov 09 UTC
I like Ready, anyone not like Ready?
kestasjk (95 DMod(P))
04 Nov 09 UTC
And if Ready is okay what should "Un-Ready" be?
hellalt (70 D)
04 Nov 09 UTC
Ready sounds like "I'm ready to finish now" and finish like "I need to go to the bathroom"
Ready is good.
I don't really mind what the buttons are called. Those of us that have been around for a little while understand the two buttons usage, regardless of labels, so if it helps ease understanding for new players then so be it.

What happened to he auto switch drop boxes?
hellalt (70 D)
04 Nov 09 UTC
Countess: then we can just name them button 1 and button 2
or button alpha and button omega
hellalt (70 D)
04 Nov 09 UTC
seriously what about "apply" and "save"?
hellalt (70 D)
04 Nov 09 UTC
or better apply and complete/finalize
denis (864 D)
04 Nov 09 UTC
How about red check marks if there is an empty drop box?
Or... "thinking" and "done thinking"...

Hellalt - I was just making the point that if different words make use easier for new players then that is the way to go, the rest of us should not be confused by the new names. Sadly I don't think that Button 1/Button 2 pr Alpha/Omega would help the new guys much.
kestasjk (95 DMod(P))
04 Nov 09 UTC
Auto are coming back, "apply"&"save" don't really describe what the buttons do, and there are crosses, checkmarks etc in the in-progress auto-orders code
hellalt (70 D)
04 Nov 09 UTC
You don't have to respond to my sarcastic comments
Actually "thinking" and "done thinking" are the most representative...
hellalt (70 D)
04 Nov 09 UTC
btw why should anyone be able to see when someone has finalized his/her moves or not?
I like to finalize moves even if I expect a message from another player just to feel that "so far I'm done with this game" and so that it doesn't appear in a box in my home page. But other players may take it like "he doesn't care what I have to say, otherwise he wouldn't finalize his moves".
I think the finalize status should be invisible to the other players.
StevenC. (1047 D(B))
04 Nov 09 UTC
Or rather, the finalize status should be an optional setting when creating a new game.
kestasjk (95 DMod(P))
04 Nov 09 UTC
I guess the thought is that if someone is repeatedly holding the game up in a live game say people would probably want to know who it is. It's one of those (many) things where if it were changed just as many people would probably ask for it to be changed back
kestasjk (95 DMod(P))
04 Nov 09 UTC
Also there's a more subjective thing where you want the board page to feel "live", so it should be totally clear that you are actually playing with others and not by yourself, even if you're not in active communication with the people you're playing with
473x4ndr4 (108 D)
04 Nov 09 UTC
My final say on this is that 'Finalize' can't really be more blatantly obvious than it is.

What happened to the short live auto updating dropdowns? Those were infinitely more useful than any renaming scheme... it made playing from iphone actually quite convenient.

Game strategies for newbies
Hello everyone. I'm new to this site but played Diplomacy a bit at college years ago.
After browsing the forums a bit I've noticed mentions of named strategies in some posts e.g. "Alpine ambush" (I think this one was a joke though).
Is there somewhere that such strategies are displayed/discussed?
I 'm just looking to speed up my re-learning of the game and don't have the spare lifetime to trawl through all the games on the site.

Is this considered cheating?
Ok, I just finished an anon gunboat game, and decided to see who the two people I drew against were. They are judas User ID#: 18497, and duzenko User ID#: 18431. duzenko has finished 17 games, and judas has finished 18 games. ALL of duzenko's games have been with judas. And they have allied in each game. How wrong is this? I feel that I could have won the game had they not been 'allied' in the anon gunboat game. Seriously, let's ruin the fun.
