Small Problem....
Hey, I've noticed that in my games, some players' enter moves and I can't know if they had...like, you know how there's the green check to show that you entered moves and a red "x" that show that you didn't? Some of the time they seem to be inaccurate.

Deleting Sent Messages
Can this feature be added? Say the recipient of the message you send is not logged on and looking, can it be redacted? The reason I ask is because if I were to divulge information that I wasn't supposed to, I can't just take it back.

Granted, in real life, you can't redact what you say. However, using appropriate body language and explanations - you might be able to weasel out of a bad situation, which you can't do here on phpDiplomacy...

What should be done with these people?

Or is their subsequent misfortune punishment enough?

Anyone interested in a 5 pt WTA game tonight?
post here if you're interested. I need seven people who would agree to ten minute phases. I want the game to last no more than 3 hours max.

Hi, my name is Jason, and...
I'm addicted to diplomacy *hangs head in shame* :)

I suppose work has something to do with it, but seriously, when you are checking for that little message icon every 5-10 minutes on your computer, 'just in case'? Or you can look it up on your phone...
hellalt (70 D)

i do that all the time!

Yes, luckily for me the internet still costs a bomb on my phone - i think if i could afford it things would quickly change and i'd be on here even more!

same here i want to buy an ipod touch so i can play diplomacy even when my brothers on the phone

I have a problem too...I leave it up at work all the time and I'm constantly checking it.

I'll do some work for about 10 minutes, then check dip...work 10, check dip.

It's sad.
kwkak37 (140 D)

Not that I use my phone for the Internet, but phpDip is now making me check my progress at school... Of course it's all during free time.
jbalcorn (429 D)
27 May 09 UTC
I'm completely addicted and it's getting hard to get work done. My phone just won't work with phpDip - I can see the map but not read press. Probably a good thing - although I've considered getting a blackberry JUST to play!
mlempic2 (377 D)
27 May 09 UTC
@jbalcorn - The blackberry storm has the same problem, after the first couple of lines the press gets lost behind the map. I beleive this is a problem with all the blackberrys (I may be wrong).

I can say even with out the press I do check the maps on my blackberry or check to see if there is press and then run to a computer to read it.
pootercannon (326 D)
27 May 09 UTC
I have an ipod touch and except for some press problems, it works great. if you see me playing on it, you can bet that I'm probably NOT playing some game I downloaded, but on the browser playing Diplomacy.
amonkeyperson (100 D)

@pootercannon:
try scrolling with TWO fingers on the press box.
The iPhone doesn't make the second scrolling bar so you have to use two fingers to scroll through the press.

Wow. There's a lot of interest in using phones to access phpDip. I wonder if we could get someone to write up a more mobile friendly version of phpDip.
Centurian (3257 D)
27 May 09 UTC
That would be nice. I don't have a blackberry or iphone, but if it was compatable with phpdip then that would factor into my decision to buy one. (I hope thats not too sad).

I have a hiptop, where I get problems with overlapping text a lot - once there has been enough conversation, I can see well enough, but at least I can see when there is a message (and often I can work out what they are saying). It also lets me input moves when I haven't had time to get to a pc!
figlesquidge (2131 D)
28 May 09 UTC
I'm not sure who it was with, but I had a conversation about this recently. The main issue seems to me to be that the least mobile friendly element of phpDip is the map, and that can't really be changed can it?
Other than the fact that the I-phone isn't good at scrolling (that's not down to phpDip - blame Apple!) what problems do you get using phpDip on a phone?
oxsolid (135 D)

i heard that the gphone works well with this site... i have the instint from sprint (and i can check maps and messages, and write messages), but i plan to swith to a gphone once sprint has one.
oxsolid (135 D)

the worst problem is the 200 character limit per message.. gets very lame to break up threats and thoughts (this was sent from my phone)

@amonkeyperson:

Thank you so much! I am so happy right now.
jasoncollins (186 D)

I don't have a problem with the map at all (apart from it being quite small, and hitting the map expand button doesn't really do anything lol). The main issue for me is the continually overlapping text a lot of the time - for example, the moves/orders boxes cover up text, the banners and icons occasionally block text, and the other names/status/players text gets intermingled with message responses. Generally messages sent are shown after the map (though it may be just the initial messages are covered by the map, and I don't notice as I'm on the computer at this point anyway).

Just nb, this is again on my hiptop screen.

For Blackberries, the default browser settings are not phpdip friendly -- useable, but not great. Once you tweak the settings, you get a crystal clear map that is easily viewed without loading the full picture, and the text good (except for the long text box). You can avoid the text box issue by changing the browser settings to view in Page mode, rather than Column mode, but then you have to deal the the zoom in and out icon.
jasoncollins (186 D)
29 May 09 UTC
I checked and the map does get in the way - but again only for the initial conversations. The 'sourceforge' icon (which I can't see when viewing on the pc?) at the bottom gets in the way of long conversations as well..

I wonder if my hiptop has browsing settings after this fashion.. hmm.

i try to do that at work, but my internet connection for my iTouch is kinda slow
Draugnar (0 DX)

The map is easily handled as it is just a graphic and the mobile webpage could be written to show the map off a link (like the large map) and allow for zooming (my blackberry can zoom in and out of images) and scrolling. The trick there is the phone's memory limits versus the total size of the map. Try the blackberrys email systems ability to view large images by only keeping the amount of data needed for the present screen view.

My problem is phpDip is blocked by the BES server at our former parent company (we bought out their shares, but they are much bigger than us so still provide IT services I couldn't possibly do by myself) where the corporate Blackberries are issued from. I'm thinking about trying to find a way to remap any links and redirect the html on my dev webserver, which isn't blocked obviously. The trickiest part will be form submissions.

One of the problems is the structure of the site here. If it was changed so that when you had a new message or a game was adjudicated then you got a message (as done on a few other sites) it would save you all the checking.
so I would pressure Kestas and the Design folks to make those changes so you can live better with your addiction.

From Richard Dawkins' book "The God Delusion" there is a famous few paragraphs where Dawkins basically lays low the argument for god in a few words.... something about how much better the world would be without God. It's been quoted on this forum before and I'd like to have it for a paper I'm doing anyone know what I'm talking about?
