Help explain negative numbers to a 5 year old - NDC
So my 5 year old is fascinated by math, and we recently came across the concept of negative numbers. But I find myself in a dilemna in trying to teach him what they are. Can you actually have negative anything? And forget temperature, thats not based on an absolute scale. Negative Kelvin would be impressive. He can't really have negative apples, or dogs.

I am playing my first gunboat game and I don't suspect cheating but am just wondering if there are any measures to prevent it aside from honor?

GFDT Round Two....?
Hey folks, just wondering when round 2 of the GFDT is scheduled to start. It seems like it's been a while to me, so I'm just looking for info as to whether or not there's a late start or something.

Well there's one game that must be finished.
http://phpdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=6871

Then, I suppose llama will do the seeding for the next round and we'll set up the games.
cgwhite32 (1465 D)
12 Mar 09 UTC
Yup, that's me! Sorry guys. It's actually an interesting game, switching alliances all the time. I won't comment any more as it's ongoing, but it may take a little while to finish off.
thewonderllama (100 D)
12 Mar 09 UTC
Chris and cg beat me to it. Yes, game 16 is still ongoing and will affect the seeding for round 2, so until it is complete I can't yet make the draws.
Darwyn (1601 D)

I am actually quite under stress right now, and will also be for at least 2 more weeks (also the reason why I am semi-quitting my ongoing game)

if you guys duke it out, fine by me, by the looks of it it might take a long while to finish this one

but if you draw and round 2 suddenly starts tomorrow, I shall be very very pissed
cgwhite32 (1465 D)
12 Mar 09 UTC
Point taken Akroma! I don't want to end up in a game with you next round with you very very annoyed, given your record in round one!

Is round 2 seeding based soley on Round 1?
Chrispminis (916 D)
13 Mar 09 UTC
Yes, except when there are ties, in which case original seeding is used as a tiebreaker.
EdiBirsan (1469 D(B))
13 Mar 09 UTC
When round 2 starts, will an email be sent directly to the 21 people or is it the sort of thing that it will be posted here and we have to hunt through all the posts to find it?
thewonderllama (100 D)
13 Mar 09 UTC
The 21 players for round 2 will be emailed. I wouldn't expect everyone to be checking here. :)

And yes, round 2 seeding is based on round 1 performance with ties broken by round 1 seeding.

I noticed season 1 of the league is almost done too.... only Group C game 5 left to be completed.

Can we make sure that GFDT Round 2 and the new league season starts are staggered a least a little.. would be much appreciated.

Ya it is, half way through the game you would never guess that England and Austria would be the strongest countries. The MasterGamer had quite the roller coaster.

There will definitely be an EOG for this one. I've never put so much into a game :s
Darwyn (1601 D)

This year's tournament has taken much longer...I remember we started the Finals in April last year.
flashman (2274 D(G))
13 Mar 09 UTC
I keep meaning to do EOG's but something always comes up.

Perhaps when the League has completed its first stage I will do an End of Group message.
cgwhite32 (1465 D)
13 Mar 09 UTC
Interesting idea flash. The problem with being in separate groups is that we sometimes miss what's going on elsewhere. Has your group finished yet?
flashman (2274 D(G))
13 Mar 09 UTC
No, Game 5 is still running and is the last game of all in the whole Group Stage. I expect to win. I hold Trieste and sod all else but have them all thinking I am finished.

Looks like a battle of pride (or seeding), seeing as cg and mastergamer both are already in round 2...
Akroma (967 D)
13 Mar 09 UTC
who knows ?

that one additional seeding point could be the one that decides the outcome

also, who knows what lazysummer will pull to maybe get into the next round ?
cgwhite32 (1465 D)
13 Mar 09 UTC
Pride comes before a fall...

Flash - would be good to get a decent rematch in Blighty where I actually manage to turn up. And the cricket season hasn't started yet... And I wear a helmet now...
TheGhostmaker (1545 D)
13 Mar 09 UTC
If there is a draw, Mastergamer looses out and Lazy goes though.
Akroma (967 D)
13 Mar 09 UTC
true enough, but it doesn't look like a draw anytime soon
england and italy have a strong vice on austria

should italy aim to replace themastergamer in round 2, there is not much that can be done
TheGhostmaker (1545 D)
13 Mar 09 UTC
Italy gaining enough SCs is also possible
Centurian (3257 D)
13 Mar 09 UTC
Yeah, Lazy summer could technically qualify still and if either CG or Master eliminate the other then the eliminated one doesn't qualify. In fact if CG wins a certain balance of centres neither Master or Lazy will qualify and Ivo_Ivanov would squeek in. Exciting stuff.

How is round 2 going to work? Are there two games? Just one? How will the seeding hash out those games if there are more than one?
thewonderllama (100 D)
13 Mar 09 UTC
Round 2 will have 6 games. Each person will be in two games.
Darwyn (1601 D)
13 Mar 09 UTC
6 games for round 2 of the tournament? wow, that sounds like a lot.

Darwyn (1601 D)
13 Mar 09 UTC
lol...ooops...sorry. Just realized that was total. nevermind.
figlesquidge (2131 D)
13 Mar 09 UTC
I'm very out this year, but just as a suggestion: can you separate all players from first round games?
Centurian (3257 D)
14 Mar 09 UTC
Interesting proposal. That might make putting the games together more complicated. Are you worried about meta-gaming figle? I think the important thing is to make sure noone is in both round 2 games with someone else.

Assuming that isn't done, what ranks are playing together?
For example: Players rank 1,4,8,12,15,18,21 together? Or whatever.. I didn't really understand how it was put together last round.

My two games were:

8,9,25,26,39,40,54=201
5,11,19,24,26,45,49=179

So according to seedings, the second game should have been tougher.
thewonderllama (100 D)
14 Mar 09 UTC
I was planning to make game assignments in Round 2 work similarly as to the ones in Round 1, determined by seed. Round 2 will use the Round 1 rankings instead of seeding, however. If you're interested in how this was done, I just put up a quck explaination here: http://www.llamanation.org/gfdt-about-game-placements

so wait - is round two only open to players from round 1? can new players join the tournament?

or the league? i'm still confused as how i could sign up and how many pts I should try to have in reserve for my games.

strange, the standings were removed

Babak, round two of the tournament is only open to round one players, so you'll have to wait for next year's GFDT.

You can join the league now, I believe, you will just enter the lowest group and have to climb your way up. The league is a series of five games, each game started about two weeks after the previous game and typically for a 25 point buy-in. I think the next round of the league will start up again in a few weeks or so, but not sure. If you can have 125 points for all five league games, that is best, but if you are low on points you can request that your league games are for a 5 point buy-in and that is typically accommodated.
TheGhostmaker (1545 D)
15 Mar 09 UTC
I shall be reducing the number of games to 4 for this season, so that we can start the next season on time. It will then go back to five games.

I will try to make sure that we start a couple of weeks after the GFDT round 2, because there is alot of overlap between the two.

The standard buy in will be dropped to 5 points, with agreement required to increase.
thewonderllama (100 D)
15 Mar 09 UTC
Standings are back up, server glitch. :)

TheGhostmaker, sorry I haven't gotten back to you, will hit you back later today.
