Global press visibility - a necessary feature?
When picking a country that went CD, one has no idea about what was going on in the game, which could have affected one's decision. For instance, I recently picked a country with a fairly good game, only to find out that two players knew each other, and, although they admitted it would not affect performance, their alliance proves unbreakable. I would never have taken the CD were the global press visible. As well, the global press usually specifies any additional rules, and allows to get a sense of the game, to help decide whether one should pick a CD country or not.

Therefore, a suggestion: would not it make sense to make global press visible when looking at the board of any game, where one is not part of?

Site down?
Over the weekend I missed at least one turn in one of my games and went into Civil Disorder in the other (which I believe has been taken over by someone). I tried to log in multiple times on Sunday and earlier this morning, however the site loaded extremely slow and always timed out before I could open either game to enter orders.

Is there something that can be done about this?

Original players listed in Global?
The message in the Global tab to advise all players that a power has been taken over from CD is a nice touch. A worthwhile addition, I think, would be for the original players to be listed in global at the start of the game. This would help us all in the ongoing fight against metagamers.

A couple of private messages which I've accessed recently by taking over CD powers strike me as a little suspicious.... but I've no idea who controlled those powers, or the countries from which the messages came, at the time they were sent. This one's particularly touching....

"im callling you back in a few im not tired. I love you!!"

Good job they went CD, really.... try breaking THAT alliance....

Hours/phase????
Just when you are talking about game speed a newbie question if you please?
Just what do you mean by 24 hours/phase??

Is it like

example 1
autumn 24 h
spring 24 h

or
example 2
spring 24 h
retreat and disbanding phase 24 h (if necessary)
autumn 24 h
retreat and disbanding phase 24 h (if necessary)
gaining and losing unit phase 24 h (if necessary)

I just started a game and it seems more like example 1 but say if we have a
24 hours/phase, How many hours for retrat and gaining phase?
what if they are not necessary?? Could you then when creating a game choose
if they should always be there or not?

Also I think I saw a countdown clock but now I cannot see one?

I hope you have some time to answer my question....

/MensSana

Quick Question on turn endings
Do you have to finalize your moves for them to be valid? In other words if you have set your moves, but don't finalize and the time for the turn ends, will your move for that turn still occur happen, or the move for you just get cancelled?

Is the side selection at the beginning truly random?
I'm sorry to bring this up but I've just started my fifth game - and I'm Turkey AGAIN. That makes me Turkey in four out of five games.

A short wish list
I'd like two small things, things that probably could be done quickly enough. On the text turn history, I'd like to see the time the turn was adjudicated for all players, plus the time each player finally finalized their orders. If nothing else, it would make it abundantly clear if one player was playing two or more positions and consistently did their turns a short time apart.

A 24-hour "1900" phase when game begins
As we all know, when someone creates a game, the game will start in 24 hours when five to six players have joined.
However, I suggest another 24 hours pre-game phase after the game starts, and this phase will be used for negotiations. It is crucial to negotiate for alliances at the very beginning of the game and I found out that many people has difficulties forming an alliance successfully because players are in different time zones and they login at different times. Oftenly when one player suggests an alliance to the 2nd one, the 2nd one logs in half a day later than the 1st one, and oftenly the 1st player has no time to wait for a reply and has to make his moves.
Because of this, many opportunities to form alliances are disrupted. Therefore, I believe that another 24-hour pre-game phase is required.

I think the adjudicator screwed up!
Obviously I'm not sure whether I did a mouse scroll or something by accident, but I'm completely certain I had Galicia->Budapest recorded in my moves in the game Lord Moldy Butt. This can be evidenced by 2 armies supporting this move. Is there any chance you could take a look at the history and correct it? Thank you.

Possibly a browser bug?

In http://phpdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=5028, I built a fleet in Naples in Winter 03, but it turned out to be an army. In http://phpdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=5000, I moved Vienna-Bohemia in Spring 05, but it was recorded as Vienna-Trieste. I posted about 2 similar situations last week; Kestas checked the logs and concluded that the orders were not fully entered or were incorrectly entered. Since then, I've become even more careful, not finalizing moves until I'm absolutely sure they're ok, and then re-verifying 2-3 times after they're finalized. Players in games I'm in may be able to confirm that I've told them I'm no longer willing to finalize moves when I'm taking a break from work; now I almost always wait until I get home in the evening to make sure I don't make mistakes because I'm in a hurry. I can't believe I made 2 mistakes in 24 hours, and didn't catch them even after checking 5-6 times. If, like last time, Kestas verifies that the orders received by the server are the ones being executed, then I have to wonder if it's a bug in the browser. I'm using Safari 3.1.2 on a Mac (with multiple tabs, if that makes a difference, as Kestas said it might for the disappearing messages). The OS is Tiger (10.4.11). Has this been happening to anyone else?

Thankfully, the consequences haven't been terribly severe so far. Even when I (unintentionally) attack my allies due to these orders, the orders are always so completely crazy that (so far, at least), everyone has believed that they're errors.

If the moves have been finalized, and you see the results on your screen after finalizing, it cannot be a browser issue.
my guess would be that it's either an eyesight issue or a brain issue
nitish (2087 D(S))
16 Aug 08 UTC
That's what I thought, but then I don't understand how the orders shown after finalizing aren't the same as the executed orders. It's getting to the point where I'm planning to take screenshots of every set of finalized orders.

When you send messages with lots of tabs open, they sometimes don't get sent.

As far as I can see, it is either an error very specific to your browser/Operating system, or its a ten digit bio-interface issue.
nitish (2087 D(S))
16 Aug 08 UTC
Well, if it's a browser/OS combination issue, I would expect it to happen to other people as well. So perhaps it's just me being incredibly stupid, though this is why I've been trying to be extremely careful. It seems a little weird that it should have never happened before, then twice in rapid succession, and then after a week, twice again in roughly a day. Anyway, it can't be helped now. Will start taking screenshots so at least I'll know when I make stupid mistakes in the future.
alamothe (3367 D(B))

other people do not use multiple tabs. perhaps the errors are due to this?

Civil Disorder Germany... as England!
I was at a loss for words when I looked at this game...
http://phpdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=4457

Apparently Civil Disorder Germany has been assigned to England. I've checked, and it is actually the system created account. An explanation may possibly spoil the humor of this, but I am still curious.

Autumn 1908: Italy has 0 units and 1 SC
BESM takes over Italy.

http://www.phpdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=4793
Spring 1907: Italy has 0 units and 0 SCs
aaaa has taken over Italy.

I think it would be a mistake not to list desperate CD positions somewhere on the site, though there's an argument that countries with two supply centers or less should be listed separately from the other joinable games.... but listing positions with no units at all somewhere where innocent, unsuspecting noobs can find them.... I dunno.... seems a bit cruel to me....

Elo Ratings
As some of you know, I developed a few weeks ago a rating system based loosely on the exemplary Elo-rating system used primarily for chess and other two player games. (Note that Elo is not an acronym, but actually the name the surmane of the man who conceieved the system). After requests from Chrispminis, alamothe and sean that I publish the results, and since Kestas said that he is happy for me to post them, they are posted in the reply.

Pause Game
Is there any way to pause a game. Because in our private game some people cannot play next week.
Or isn't it any problem if no player makes a move and everey player gets the state CD. Can we continue the game in - lets say - 1 week?
