Leaving the site for some months
Dear friends and foes,

Due to increased work-load lately, I have to take a break in Diplomacy at least for few months. As my final game 'Revelstone' has had unfortunate ending for me, it seems that it's time to start packing :) I will definitely follow this game to see, how it ends ... most exciting. You will probably see me again in autumn - September/October.

all the best,

Rait

starting with the first game you joined on phpdiplomacy.net?

How about the most consecutive games, NOT starting with the first you joined??

Just curious...

Rule questions - When supporting unit attacked
Here's the scenario.

Russia:
A Warsaw is supporting hold A Moscow.
A Galicia is supporting hold A Warsaw.

Austria
Silesia to Warsaw
Sev to Moscow
Ukr support Sev to Moscow.

Does the Austrian move to Warsaw break Warsaw's support or Moscow? Or since Galicia is supporting Hold Warsaw, the Warsaw support of Moscow is still valid?

Question on support
I am new to phpDiplomacy, but I am quite familiar with the board game. In the board game you may not support the hold of a unit that is giving support elsewhere, but in this game it appears that the Aegean Sea supported an attack to Constantinople, and the Ionian sea supported the Aegean Sea in a hold. Are you allowed to do that in phpDiplomacy? Or am I reading it incorrectly?

Joining a bit late?
Hello there. I'm new to this (but have been a fan of Risk for a long time, and am already a fan of this game!) and 6 people (including myself) JUST started a game today (all of whom go to my high school, actually!).

Now, Italy is a computer, I think, as it's name is "Civil Disorder Germany" (which I would have assumed to be Germany, and not Italy!!!), and I've noticed on same games it will say "Take Over A Country" when they are in "Civil Disorder", so, I was wondering if there was a way my friend who is late to the party could join in as Italy.

Is that possible? How does it work? He literally JUST got able to join about 3 hours after the game started (and by the looks of things these games last pretty long!). Is he out of luck?

Thank you very much for your help!

Questions about DRAWS
Dear all,

I have read topics on this many times, but even the most knowledgable players don't seem to be able to answer consistently.

If a game is Drawn and one player has 17 scs, one player has 10 and the remaining 2 players have 4 each how do the points get divided.

There are 3 points of view depending who you ask -

1) It would seem some people think all players get 25% of the pot (as there are 4 players left)

2) some people think all 7 original players get their points back

3) and some people think that the person with 17scs gets 17xpoints and the other players get 10pts and 4 points respectively.

could someone please tell me the correct answer, 1, 2 or 3!

Obviously option 4 is Noodlebug who believes all players in a draw should be taken outside and hung, drawn and quartered!

Cheers fellas :)

Mark

Unfortunately Brutorix and Pandora both went CD - which with the treaties that we had in place effectively ruined the game, so we've had to call it a day!! Very frustrating as it was building up nicely.

Just thought I'd point out that Puerto Ricans may decide the next President of the United States. It's still unlikely, but with the two Democratic candidates remaining so close the Puerto Rico's electoral votes (and yes they do have them) could decide it between Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton. The only two states that vote later are Montana and South Dakota and Puerto Rico has almost twice as many votes as the two combined.

Best of Fiction
I know it's been done before, but which fictional characters do you think would make the best diplomacy players.

For me, I would have to nominate:
Ender and/or Bean from Orson Scott Card's series
Paul Atreides from "Dune"
Darth Revan - You'll have to be a complete Star Wars nerd to recognize this one. =)

I think Winston Churchill (who is not, as far as I know, a fictional character) would be undisputed world diplomacy champion. He wasn't one of the Machiavellian realpolitik masters like Bismarck, but he had an uncanny ability to reason with people, showing them how cooperating with him was in their own best interests. It is borne out by the historical record that those who disagreed with him ended up regretting it.

Castruccio Castracani Of Lucca?
I'm not sure if he actually existed or was just a figment of Machievelli's imagination, which is what I understood. If the later, I propose him. His life story is at the end of 'The Prince'.
Oh, and how about Napoleon the pig from animal farm.
Not sure if those two are allowed as both were written to point out how impressive the correct use of diplomacy and force can be.
Another idea from me, again not from the modern fiction all the other idea's given seem to come from: The Pied Piper of Hamelin. Anyone who can get a whole village to follow him just by playing music would be awesome at the game.

however LOTR was a bipolar world. good and evil. the lotr pc game had a few factions and you could play it like Total War Rome but it was poorly thought out game structure.

Cersei Lancaster from a Game of thrones would have been good.

What about Wormtongue in LOTR? Very tricky...

And of course Sauron when he could still chnage shape.

Kirk from Star Trek?
mingle (347 D)

Richard Sharpe from bernard Cornwells series might suck at the whole diplomacy, but he'd squish everyone!
sean (3490 D(B))

wombat what book are you up to? in feast of crows cersei is up shit creek with a paddle bigtime. i think the dwarf is a better diplomacy player, crafty but with a heart! (and a taste of tasty tail)

wormtongue? gandalf soon saw to him but.

"Keep your forked tongue behind your teeth. I have not passed through fire and death to bandy crooked words with a witless worm"

kirk? picard would run rings around him. sure kirk would be alright in a straight fight, brave, willing to bluff, bold when he needs to be and all that but the man has little guile or craftiness.

I've played as Porfiry Petrovich from Crime and Punishment (he seemed more cunning than the others) and Peter Wiggin. from the Ender series. True, he's not as much of a tactician as Ender or Bean, but he has the desire to take over the world.

Fine- Tyrion then, Sean...

For Wormtongue, I assume no magical powers or wizards are involved in the talking stage of diplomacy (take my suggestion of Sauron in his fair form)

I disagree with you on Kirk- Picard is a diplomat, yes, but Kirk's got a style and energy for taking risks that puts him up there- at least people will talk to him

anlari (8640 D)

A bunch of characters from the Foundation Novels..

Obviously the Mule, First Speaker, perhaps the mayor at the first story.. maybe Seldon as well too..

@Gunzo, I'm actually reading that book right now. I'm absolutely hating it. Nothing ever seems to happen. I guess I'm just not a big fan of the randomness genre. I don't really like anything by Tim O'Brian or Kurt Vonnegut all that much either.
Gunzo (0 DX)
20 Apr 08 UTC
The 'randomness genre' - love the categorisation! I'm sorry you are not enjoying it (it's my favourite book) but can understand why. It took me 6 months to read the first time. Even if you struggle with every word I urge you to finish it as they say the world is divided into three categories:

Those who have read Catch-22
Those who have yet to try
Those who gave up reading it!

The next book he wrote, 'Something Happened' is slightly longer and much, much less happens in it. Reading it is like pulling teeth. As Douglas Adams said, it's '...an altogether terser work, for masochists.'

Anlari: great call with the Foundation. I agree entirely and would like to say that the Mule and First Speaker(s) may not fare well in an internet-based game but would obviously kick-ass in face-to-face. I would expect Salvor Hardin and Hober Mallow to perform well in any version of the game...

General Tacticus, Ankh-Morporks infamous General.
The words:AB HOC POSSUM VIDERE DOMUM TUUM, or "I can see your house from here" decorated the front of his castle.
He was the military leader of Ankh-Morpork, and introduced innovative ideas in the art of war.
Churchill (2280 D)

On the Kirk-Picard debate:
Kirk is the only one to pass the Kobayoshi Maru test, by changing the environment of the test. That test was an otherwise impossible situation, which clearly shows a string of thinking outside the box at indirect options that would help him in Diplomacy. Picard however, is overly conscerned with doing the "right thing" and following all the directives. I don't think that Picard would have the guts to backstab an otherwise helpful neighbor. Without that, you don't win.
sean (3490 D(B))
22 Apr 08 UTC
thats true churchill. picard wouldn't make a good stabber. worf would be next to useless.
mingle (347 D)
22 Apr 08 UTC
Lol General Sean, although i think that Havelok, the patrician could well be far better. Or perhaps Granny weatherwax.
Braveheart (2408 D(S))
22 Apr 08 UTC
If you haven't read Catch-22 then you have defintiely missed out.

The character Milo Minderbinder would be pretty handy I reckon.... pretty shady fellow, but somehow manages to get everyone to trust him repeatedly. i think his catch phrase was something "What is good for Milo is good for your country"

Being contracted by both Germany and the US in Orvieta would be akin to having both France and Germany support your English fleet into Belgium in Aut '01. He was also ruthless enough to use US bombers to attack their own base at Paniosa.... which has got to be up their with the biggest stabs of all time.

Why do people start new games...
...when they have just allowed themselves to go cd in others?

No names, no need to point the finger directly: you know who you are.

Is it attention seeking? Or is it the equivalent of checking your mobile phone every few minutes to confirm that you are connected - you need to know that other people will play with you?

If I come across as being somewhat judgemental here, I most sincerely apologise. I should have made my position clearer: I am totally and utterly judgemental on this...

It might not be cheating but it sure ruins games as quickly as the meta-gamers.

There, rant over.

Capitalists vs. Non-capitalists
I propose a Diplomacy game between declared supporters of capitalism and communists/non-capitalists/those not entirely crazy about capitalism. Given countries are assigned randomly, I'm not sure how it would be set up, but 3 of the powers would be the capitalists (England, France, Germany?) and the other 3 would be the non-capitalists. Italy would be in a state of anarchy or ambivalence.
