I am still upset at the 1998 Academy Awards
How did Shakespeare in Love win best picture instead of Saving Private Ryan.
brainbomb (290 D)

Shakespeare in Love was basically a well dressed soft core porn with a weak plot.

Saving Private Ryan is overblown, too long, and relies too much on patriotism and hubris. It's a 7/10 film. Okay, and worth watching once, but not particularly great or classic.
TrPrado (461 D)

Did you even watch it?

Jamie - while its campy - kinda feel good; its so much better and rewatchable of a movie than Shakespeare in love. Im struggling to think of the other movies which lost but I know that was the same year Thin Red Line was also up for best picture. Also a way way better film than shakespeare in love.

It was like Elizabeth, Thin Red Line, Saving Private Ryan, Shakespeare in love and other movie. Realistically that was 4th best movie in that list AT BEST

OK how about 1980 Academy Awards
Kramer vs Kramer wins over

All That Jazz
Apocalypse Now
Breaking Away
Norma Rae

So Kramer v Kramer easily 4th there. I didn't see Norma Rae, so maybe 5th.

Don't forget bb, Crash won best picture. The academy awards are shit. Don't take it seriously.

Suicide Squad won an Oscar. I think we all have something to be upset about at some point.

I don't regard Saving Private Ryan as being significantly better than Memphis Belle, Schindler's List, or the recent Fury wjth Brad Pitt or the earlier 1970's Battle of Britain ( other ww2 movies made around the same time, compared to ww2 movies made in the 1950's.. The weakest ww2 movie of recent times was, imho, Inglorious bastards.

*basterds
TrPrado (461 D)
10 Jul 17 UTC
I don't usually consider Inglorious Basterds when I think of WWII films. It's intentionally inaccurate. I think it fits more along the lines of the rest of Tarantino's work than with any of the likes of Saving Private Ryan or Schindler's List or anything else.

Am I the only person who liked Crash? It was more fun to watch than Brokeback...

Collateral was great too.

The best film of 1998 was Out Of Sight. Best Picture rarely goes to the best picture.

TrPrado... Fury with Brad Pitt is a completely diff WW2 film than inglorious... inglorious bastards was definetely not best picture worthy. It was cornier than django... which is saying alot

Fury is an insanely good film. Start to finish badass. It was marred by controversy bevause they filmed a tank battle on remembrance day in rural UK. Locals got very upset at hearing explosions and the pomposity of film crews disrupting the peace. Ppl felt it was disrespectful.

I forgot about another few great" war movies..." Oh, What a Lovely War" directed by Sir Richard Attenborough, with a stellar cast and production company, "The Iron Cross", directed by Sam Peckinpah and " The Tin Drum". The corniest Ww2 movie.."Dive Bomber" starring Errol Flynn..as a doctor, and the constant smoking of cigarettes by doctors and patients is a scream.

And of course.. "Catch 22" another good satire

I remember Out of SIght - George Clooney and Jennifer Lopez - that was fun.
Kubrick (685 D)

Stanley Kubrick made a number of excellent war movies. Indeed, my handle is based on the connection between a great Kubrick film -- Paths Of Glory -- and Diplomacy.

How did Shakespeare in Love win best picture instead of Saving Private Ryan.

The whole academy system is flawed. I mean Life Is Beautiful also lost. And if you don't think the whole thing is rigged. See how the awards went. Best pic: Shakespeare; Best director: Spielberg; Best actor: Benigni. Obviously they wanted to give everyone best picture, and when millenals make up the majority of voters they will start having co-winners.

I agree with the bomb, this was a sham, just like Hollywood.

Thanks ILN for the suggestion, I've been to my local public library and asked about the movie "Dark Blue World", they did a computer search and found a DVD copy in another public library, and have put in a request on my behalf and it will be sent to my local public library for me to borrow.

It's not rigged. It's just stupid people making stupid decisions. We Americans excel at being stupid.

Do Republicans think that reason is good or bad?
There seems to be debate on the right about whether reason is to be trusted or not. (The left is uniformly suspicious of spurrious argument). I'm seeing Republican lawmakers being skeptical about using reason but rightwing media seems fine with it

Webdip Conservatives have convinced me my world view is flawed.
I have decided to become a Republican and a Libertarian because the arguments made on this forum have convinced me the Democrat party is no better than the pro-slavery radicals of the 1860's. I have learned that tax cuts for the wealthy, deportations, and putting business and moneymaking ahead of health of US citizenry is paramount

It is always darkest before the dawn
Given the Don Jr. revelations, this might seem like a bleak time for the Republicans, but if they can wait out the media coverage without breaking rank they will be have saved Trump. There is no larger shoe yet to drop and it will be morning in America again.

Why shouldnt North Dakota have a nuclear weapons programme?
The US has nuclear weapons. We got silos and shit all over Montana/ND and SD. Who are we to say that North Dakota is not entitled to secede and have their own nuclear arsenal?

i think we all understand the implications of this: twitter is a digital forum open to the public, but it's also privately operated and it has set rules. the decision on this case is going to have sweeping effects on the internet and internal law alike
