'The story covers a period of eighteen years in the life of Julian, a first-rate sportsman and teacher who loves sex, is accused of rape and fathers an illegitimate son, Andrew, with whom he is allowed no contact. With his long-term partner, Julian is delighted when the opportunity arises to takes over parental responsibility for Andrew during his formative years and he brings him up in his own image.
Meanwhile, Andrew's mother and her family repeatedly seek revenge for Julian's crime against her. Each time the act of vengeance backfires. The Confucian prediction comes true, "Before you set out on a journey of vengeance, dig a second grave."
The tragedy unfolds as the principal characters recount a period of their lives in a series of twelve overlapping tales, each followed by a verse or poem, replacing the chorus of a classical tragedy.'
