Does webDiplomacy keep statistics on how many times each country wins on its site?
I was just wondering whether these statistics are kept, and if they are, what it might show about bias towards a particular country.

I continue to be disappointed at northerners' math abilities. Were you under the impression that the south, if it seceded, would keep paying federal income tax? It would not, so the budget deficit would not at all be solved. A lot of expenses would leave, and a lot of money. (A few more expenses, it's true, but not enough to make up the deficit).

As for whether the south would "resemble a third world country within a generation" -- it's a charming idea, of course, and it's true that might happen if the USA treated the south like an enemy, instituted embargos, or the like, which might happen in a civil war type scenario. On the other hand, if they let them walk away, then they probably wouldn't do those things, and it's very unlikely bad things would happen to the southern economy.

http://www.statisticbrain.com/state-economic-growth-statistics/

As you'll notice here, while the economies of AL and MS are quite poor, the south easily holds its own by and large, with two of the four strongest states, and six in the top half.

There are a lot of great reasons for the south NOT to secede, even if allowed. It saddens me that the northeners on this site seem so unaware of them. It's this kind of ignorant and ill-informed snobbery that makes the idea so appealing to a lot of southerners in the first place.

Hint: the south is already well on it's way to resembling a third would country, and it would only become more of a regressive backwater without the federal government holding it in check. Here are some numbers on tax contributions vs. federal spending: http://www.lazlow.com/uploaded_images/2987025203_fc2c517522_o-748920.jpg

But yeah, no chance bad things happen to the southern economy when the confederate states lose their massive federal subsidies and your maniacal politicians turn the south into a feudalist theocracy

There are lies, damned lies, and statistics. Here's another study on the same subject that shows some significant differences from the more commonly sited study Landowner links to. One of the most obvious differences is that California is a net tax taker and Texas a net tax payer, instead of the reverse:
http://www.ritholtz.com/blog/2012/02/is-your-state-a-net-giver-or-taker-of-federal-taxes/
Eärendil (0 DX)

The difference is landowner's data is from 2005, while tolstoy's is 2012. In both sets of data texas pays more then it receives. It is true that california crosses over from payer to taker from '05 to '12. That however isn't really relevant as this data proves my point even stronger. In the data from tolstoy, with the exception of texas, the rest of the south are very heavy in the red.

"And I'd like to see how long the Federal armies could keep on fighting without the steady supply of Texas crude."
Paraphrased form the texas comptroller website-
In 2006 texas produced 21.3 percent of all US production (domestic production acconts for about 40% of our current oil needs) which means texas produced about 8.5% of all US oil needs. In 2005 they consumed 13.9% of all total US oil. I think we would be just fine without them. ;-)

Thanks for the hint, landowner. But I've travelled extensively in the south, so I don't feel I was in need of one. Nothing about it resembles a third-world country.

Important financially would be whether Texas was on board. Given that it is a very large proportion of the south's population and a net giver, it would substantially ease the issues you're talking about. In any event, the gap we're talking about is well shy of "third world." The GDP per capita of Mississippi (poorest in the US) is comparable to Spain, New Zealand, South Korea, and Israel. I'm not aware that any of those is considered the third world.

lmao @ anyone saying the South = third-world. all statements like that prove is that the speaker has no idea what the South or the third world look like

if you want to see real approaching-third-world conditions then check out some of the areas of rust belt cities that have gone to shit
also did this place become a bunch of high schoolers while I was gone? I recognize the regulars like semck and Tolstoy but the argumentation aside from theirs is laughably bad

Here is the thing... If the south decided to secede today, the general populace of the north would not be tolerant of a civil war so the federal government would more or less have to allow it to happen. Mass communication and a less geographically divisive reason for the secession (gun nuts in every state of the union) means that the feds wouldn't have the backing they had 150 years ago.

Well, if part of the NL seceded from it I'd certainly support drastic military action. It's a very unlikely scenario.

Ya think? Come on guys, there are more reasons for Alaska to secede than the South, and there is currently only one reason (against many reasons not) to secede if you're in Alaska. Gimme a break.

Calvin Coolidge
It seems that no one recognizes the good that Coolidge did. He was a pure capitalist, which means he lowered taxes (to 1.125% on the lowest bracket), and he cut spending drastically. All this led to the greatest boom in American history. Unfortunately, his successor raised taxes to outrageous levels (63% on the top bracket), and began spending more. All this led to the worst depression in US history, though FDR prolonged it. So why doesnt anyone give Coolidge credit?
